Disappointing if true. A 200-600/4-5.6 GM would be much more interesting.
I agree since the f/5.6 would make the AF to perform well with the 2X TC on the A9. And frankly, I would be happy with a more limited range, such as of 200-500mm f/5.6 to keep the weight/bulk at bay.
Well, we will have to wait several days to find out whether that rumored lens is for real.

Nikon has got their 200-500/5.6, also f/5.6 all the way, so the potential Sony lens is no worse at the short end. It’s my understanding that the Nikon lens has been very well received, so the interesting question is how the Sony lens compares optically and pricewise.

Douglas,
Is this the lens you’ve been waiting for in native FE Mount? I recall you’ve wanted something in this range to pair with a class leading APS-C camera from Sony.
Hi Mitesh, yes this is the lens I have been waiting for. I rented a Sigma 60-600 from Roger and liked it enough that I bought my own one two weeks ago, now this!. I am quite happy with the sharpness of the Sigma but haven't had much chance to try the AF for BIF. I took some pictures of a family of wood ducks with the Sigma on the A6400 yesterday, it looked like sh*t at ISO 6400, maybe good enough to look at it on iPad.
Affordability aside, I use these type of lenses for airshows more than for birds, so the flexibility of a zoom is more important to me.

Yes, I remember seeing the outstanding Tuscany images taken with the 100-400 by both you and Werner.
Thank you, Douglas! You are too kind.
Well, who wants to start speculating on the price now ? Keep in mind that it is a G and not a GM lens. BTW, the difference between the two lines are blurry anyway and almost like randomly selected. I venture to guess; it would be at the same price of the GM 100-400mm, $2,500.

So the image shows this lens is a "G", not "GM". Not that it really matters to me. I think this lens is really targeting the amateur wildlife/airshow crowds. By looking at the popularity of the Nikon 200-500, and the 150-600 from Sigma and Tamron, Sony probably knows it could sell a couple hundred of this lens for every 500 f/4 or 600 f/4 they will sell. I am guessing it will be priced around $2500 in the U.S. Hope it comes with an Arca-Swiss ready foot...

Agree. Myself I’m not interested but it will sell amongst the birding group of folks. It’s always a good rental in case you decide to do a safari or something of that nature. Like having the options

Chances are, my GM 100-400mm will be replaced by this lens, too... . We just need the A7000 now and forget about the 2X TC.
Hi Joshua,
I would not expect this lens to replace my 100-400mm GM lens. It may supplement the 100-400, but not replace it because the 100-400mm lens can be collapsed and carried much more easily including in my new Mind Shift Stash Master 13L which allows carrying this lens (or the 100-200 GM lens mounted) mounted on the camera.
Right now I have 3 cameras (A7rIII, 2 A7r) with mounted lenses, a total of 6 lenses (including those mounted) both Sony TCs, etc. in the Stash Master and it weighs about 16 pounds.
