I think Sony should and in fact may do something different. What about a 200-500 f4 with built in 1.4x?
That would offer something new. It would get us beyond the 400mm we’ve been stuck at forever. It would sell a lot for both sports (fast enough) and wildlife (presumably “small” enough).
It would be crazy expensive, but that’s beside the point.
That would actually be super awesome. Why don't more lenses come with built in TCs?

Not sure where this 200-400 came to life but no way in hell would it work for the Olympics and a 1.4 is impossible to build. Seriously this is one of those big fish stories. For the Olympics they need a 200 F2 no question about it and a 600 F4 along with there 400 2.8 or don’t show up.
It really seems like a 200mm f2 lens with a 1.4x TC would cover the most ground between the medium tele 135mm and supertele 400mm primes they have right now. a 300mm seems like it would offer less in terms of filling holes in the lineup since I'm sure many of the 300 and 400mm use cases overlap. Although I'm sure many sports people would still be itching for one just because it would probably be much cheaper and lighter.
Honestly I would prefer something like a 135-300mm f2.8 but that's just me and I feel like it would be a niche lens.

China and Thailand are definitely worse than Japan, and not worth the same price premium to me. Look at the crap quality control on most of the Sony zeiss and earlier gm zooms. They are getting a little better, but you shouldn't have to return copies of 1500$+ lenses

If it is a G-class, then somewhere around $2k sounds right. However, I think the Nikon was made in China. Not exactly "third world."
If it's a GM, I think you're low. I'd say somewhere closer to $5k, if not more.

I looks to be quite a lens and would certainly make sense for the smaller cameras, but I'm guessing they'll fill in the f4's before taking on slower primes.

Tim, thanks for the link! It appears to be legit but not what I have in mind. However, at 600mm, it is longer than 400mm on the long end. Considering that it is a zoom lens and not a niche lens as the 600mm f/4, for example, I believe the price would be more down to earth.... around $3K, I assume.

Hopefully it will perform well and not be too large and heavy.

I would say more in the weight of the Sigma 150-600mm lens, or a tad lighter, so I hope. For all we know, it is a Sigma lens just rebranded/relabeled with a significantly higher price but better AF performance, since it is a native FE lens.

Looking good. A G lens! Hope it’s under $2500. If under $3000, and it performs, it will be a huge winner. A system seller for wildlife and birders. Will it take a tc is a question? Another big one is when it goes from 5.6 to 6.3.

I don’t know how I feel about this potentially new lens. I mean, I could slap a 1.4x on my 100-400 GM and have a 140-560/6.3-8. I give up a few mm on the long end and 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop from the wide to telephoto end of the focal length range, compared to the rumored new lens. I realize that can have an impact on the final image, but I’m wondering if it makes enough of a difference to warrant the expenditure on a second lens that has significant overlap with one I already have.
Don’t mind me, though. I’m just bitter because I really wanted a 600/4 GM 😁. For a lot of people, especially those who don’t own a 100-400 GM and wants something with this focal length flexibility and reach, it looks like a great option to consider.

Hi Mitesh,
We will all have to wait and see how it performs and how our 100-400 GM with the TCs perform vs. the new lens. Also will need to see if the TCs will be able to work with the lens.
Regardless, until the release of the Sony Super Teles (600mm in particular) it is/will be the longest and fastest lens 500mm or longer in the FE mount.

Joshua, I am curious what made you think it’s a relabeled Sigma ?

Hi Rich,
You’re correct on all counts, of course. Will be interesting to see and hear more about this lens after it is announced.

Douglas, no particular reasons and pure speculation on my part .
Somehow, the big boys (CaNikon) tend to be more conservative in the focal length range but they would rather design a lens with a faster and fixed aperture. Of course the faster aperture translates more into more weight/bulk and higher price. Sigma/Tamron tend to offer more extended zoom range but sacrificing the aperture speed in favor of a smaller/lighter lens. Now, if Sony indeed introduces this 200-600mm f/5.6-f/6.3 lens it kind of follows the path of the 3rd party lens manufacturers.

Douglas,
Is this the lens you’ve been waiting for in native FE Mount? I recall you’ve wanted something in this range to pair with a class leading APS-C camera from Sony.

More likely a Tamron than a Sigma as Tamron already makes OEM lenses for Sony. But, we really have no reason to believe that Sony is not making these themselves.
