If this is good for parts, then was this one of the test lenses that got damaged? If damaged how did the seller get this to sell before the announcement and release of the lens officially?

Not sure if I want/need this lens. 100-400 has me at 560mm f/8. This 600 f/6.3. I think if the lens doesn't need to be stopped down to have excellent IQ then it might be worth it. If it needs f/8 like my Sigma 150-600C did to be tack sharp then it won't be worth it to me for 40mm...likely heavier and of course longer/bulkier lens than my 100-400/1.4TC.
Now if they bring out some super duper A7000 alongside this then I don't really care what the lens is

If I were a Sony A9 wildlife shooter, I'd be pretty excited about this. Looking at the pictures, it actually appears that the pictured lens has an internal zoom rather than a telescoping one. That alone increases the weather sealing and would make the lens worth a $1000 more than the Nikon 200-500VR. If Nikon would put a bit more into the 200-500 (faster motor, internal zoom, and nano-coating), they could have made the near perfect option for those wanting to spend $3500 or less for a "pro" quality lens.

There will be some advantages to this lens assuming Sony gets it right.
Chief among them if it takes a tc itself.
Secondarily, as @owlseyes mentioned above if it doesn’t extend. And if you look closely you’ll see that the lens appears to be at 600. I see no extension. That would be huge for safari and folks in the field.
My 100-400 with a 1.4 tc is still stupid good at 560 f8.
I suspect Sony has thought this through and will compel many to own both the 100-400 and 200-600.
Lastly, I know this lens hasn’t even been announced yet but I’d still love to see a 600 5.6 pf that takes the tcs. I suspect we will need to be happy with this lens for awhile and that if it’s good (like 200-500 5.6 Nikon good) it will sell briskly.

I'm guessing $2500-2700 for the lens AND coupled with the a7000 announcement=Sony dominance of wildlife category in one checkmate move.

If the performance is as good as the 100-400, why is it a G rather than a GM? I am pretty sure Sony did not decide on G rather than GM so they could lower the price.
For BIF, the 100-400+1.4x is 560/8 and the 200-600 is 600/6.3, which permits 1.6X faster shutter (*). That's significant, if the optical performance and AF speed/accuracy is there. But if the optical performance and AF is there, why not a GM?

I'll be really surprised if that doesn't extend while zooming. I see it is at 600mm but it doesn't even look to have the internal barrel present from the top down shot. This is just a casing and some electronics...not even sure if there is any glass in it. The Yahoo Auction listing lists it as junk for possible parts.
If this doesn't extend then I'd look at it a lot more seriously. But we've seen what it takes to make a big lens that doesn't extend (Canon 200-400 and Nikon 180-400)...this ain't that.

Per a quick search, the Nikon 200-500 can be had new for under $1,300, the Sigma 150-600 sport for $1,799....if it's "just" a G lens, and there are all these rumors of a A7000 at some point, wouldn't a price of about $1,999 make sense? The performance would be good, but you'd have the option to pay for the slightly better IQ and size advantages of the 100-400 GM if you so chose.

I think I will definitely be ordering one.
I do wish the focus ring and zoom ring were reversed though. I rarely manually focus, so having the zoom ring closer would be preferable to me personally.
