I think Sigma's fp full frame mirrorless for $1,900 will be more successful. Sony should develop something similar to it with the E-mount.

I have been hoping for years that Sony gives an option for smaller as the bodies keep getting bigger and the RX1 hasn’t been updated. Knock out the IBIS (keep size down, we have many IBIS options) and give us an FF RF Nex 7 style compact body.

Some of the FE glass is large, but many small high IQ quality native kits can be made with MF and AF options.

I bought a Sigma fp and I think it works well for some of the key use cases that ZX1 is expected to cover. E.g. there are nice in-camera editing options that allow basic post-processing from DNG files on the go with built-in color profiles + additional tweaking options (profile strength, contrast, sharpness, saturation), tone curve options and manual tone curve tweaking, exposure, "fill light", different aspect ratios and quality options, changing WB, changing Lens correction settings etc. Edited files will be saved as new JPEGs in camera. The modifications are not saved along with the original DNGs though.

There are no wireless transfer options but wired transfer works nicely by connecting the camera to smartphone by a short USB C to USB C cable, and then any image files (including original DNGs) from camera can be transferred to phone quickly. At least it works with current day Android phones, not sure about iphones as I don't have one. Then one can use the smartphone to upload the photos anywhere and also to edit the photos e.g. using the DNG files if one prefers smartphone based editing options to in-camera processing.

There's no Lightroom connectivity but it's not a problem for me since I don't use Lightroom or Adobe image editing tools on my other environments anyway, so there would be no sync etc.

The camera works well with M-mount glass, and as I still have around 10 small M/LTM lenses I intend to use it mainly with those + with small native Sigma glass like 45/2.8. The main thing that I'm missing is an EVF. Sigma's only available viewfinder option is not so small and it's also sold out everywhere in Tokyo.

It would indeed be very nice to have a similar RX1-like option but with interchangeable lenses for E-mount too, preferably with a small EVF.

How is the low light performance of the fp?

Seems very good to me in terms of IQ. I have taken some shots at up to ISO 6400 in pretty dark conditions and those came out very nicely interms of detail, color and low noise. I don't know about AF performance in low light though as I've only shot it with adapted MF lenses in such conditions so far. Only been using it for about 2-3 weeks so far and mostly in daylight though.

I would buy the fp if it had an EVF. No EVF, no deal.

I want an EVF and that Foveon sensor. Sensor tech has seen marginal improvements at low ISO for some time. I am excited for something new.

I agree with Juha Kannisto for his point that the FP covers most of what the ZX1 would have covered so I don't think I'll buy the ZX1 anymore.

If I want a small setup I use the 45/2.8 and if I want a better IQ machine I use the f/2 SL primes. They hang well on the FP body, it's comfortable to wear it around my neck with the SL primes. Even the 50/1.4 SL doesn't seem so big/heavy on the FP body (looks stupid tho).

The ZX1 would have to have some real mojo for me to consider it at this point. A year ago however and I would have jumped on it day one.

Regarding M-mount class on non-Leica bodies, the statement “works well” is totally subjective, irregardless of the knowledge and experience of the person making it. As @freaklikeme@ wrote in a thread about Leica M glass on Sony A7 RIV: “My advice on all adapted glass is don't listen to anyone else. There are so many variables that go into using adapted glass that your experience may not mirror anyone else's or your tolerances for imperfections may be looser.”

In other words, “works well” = “works well according to my personal criteria for what constitutes acceptable image quality”.

It's of course a relative statement but that's what I think based on my personal experience. I'm comparing it to my Sony A9, A7II, A7r and such where I have used the same lenses for a long time with adapters, and the lenses that are borderline on the Sony cameras are working better on the fp with less FC and such. I haven't kept any M/LTM glass that is really problematic on the Sony cameras so the ones I have are not the most challenging ones on digital.

Of course some M-mount lenses from the film era will not work well on any digital camera and those that have been optimized for the Leica M series digital cameras will probably work most optimally on the Leica M's. I believe the fp is on the same level as e.g. Leica SL and Panasonic S1 with regards to M-mount lens adaptability based on other reviews and it certainly meets my own expectations and what I would qualify as working well (relatively speaking).

I'm using e.g. Cosina Voigtländer 35/2 (Ultron), 50/2 Heliar classic, 50/3.5 Heliar, 75/2.5 Color-Heliar, Minolta M-Rokkor series (28/2.8, 40/2, 90/4), Konica M-Hexanon 90/2.8 and a Leica M-Adapter L which appears to be exactly on spec for thickness (just like my Rayqual M-E adapter).

Also the 40/2.8 Heliar designed for Sony works very well on the fp but with my adapter it works as a fixed infinity focus lens as there is no focusing helicoid My Avenon 28/3.5 (2 different versions) require a thinner-than-spec adapter so those are not currently working out well with my adapter. I haven't yet tried my Canon 50/1.5 LTM or MS-Optical 28/4 but will try those at some point too.

For example the CV 35/2 has quiet noticeable FC on my Sonys but much less (almost none) on the fp so I really enjoy using that one now and it is a perfect fit in terms of size as well.

Does anyone knows how difference between the Sigma FP sensor's stack thickness compared to the Sony's?

This.

And there is so much variability between lenses and such I've found I don't find much people's impressions too useful.

The Zeiss ZX1's official pages are no longer loading. Either they are updating them with new information or the project was terminated.

No problems loading these sites from Germany right now. But I can't say if anything has changed with regard to the content.

Both links seem to be working fine right now.

And thanks for reviving this thread. I had zero interest in this camera when it was first announced, but while looking at the web sites while checking out the links I have to say that my interest was piqued. I even went so far as to sign up for "updates". Seems like an interesting concept. Whether it is viable or not will, for me at least, depend entirely on what price they choose to ask for it (assuming that it ever really sees the light of day.)
