Yes, a modern M mount camera, small lenses, evf, 42 megapixel, ~3000€, with ibis, it would have been a dream, a real workhorse with zm and vm lenses

I probably said it somewhere in this thread already, but the money Zeiss wasted on this camera...They could've rolled out a digital m mount ikon with a high res evf. I would've bought one immediately

Unsure why but I checked eBay this morning and there’s one listed starting at $2200 with zero bids. I’m still in at $1500 for the novelty / curiosity.

It would be a fun catch and release kind of thing.

Careful, it's getting harder and harder to find buyers especially for one off items. People are locking down their wallets lately.

I have to admit that I was very curious but the lack of future support left me thinking. This has already been said, but I'll say it again; there are plenty of us that are chasing the next Sony RX1R III dream or Leica Q version in 35mm. I can definitely live with a fixed 35 mm full frame f2 or faster lens in a small package.
Dream on 🤷

Yep - cameras, saxophones, watches - even cars. Seems like prices are going down and time on the market is longer. Not a happy trend. Hopefully the pending Fed interest rate drop gets things going a bit.

Interestingly my contractor was telling me that election years are bad for business. Never made that connection.

This will end up an outdated orphan product to be sure. Not a fan of Android to begin with and I'm likely to drop my Lightroom subscription so yeah... it's already toast no matter how good the lens is.

Maybe it'll make its way into a fixed lens Sony

I can tell you that we have seen this cycle every 4 years, in my industry which is downstream oil and gas, capital expenditures get placed on hold in light of who will take over office. Our business doesn't suffer but the 'tap on the brakes' phenomenon is clearly visible and felt.

If Sony and Zeiss can get together once more on an ultra compaq FF fixed 35mm lens camera, my wallet is open 😁

Would you buy it for $1500? I honestly don't know if I would.

At this point - honestly unlikely. I have a weird relationship with Zeiss as a company for one.

But this camera is headed straight for obsolescence on the express elevator down.

The loss of the great German lens makers to our field is not often mentioned but it's a great shame nevertheless. The large format (film) community loved Rodenstock and Schneider lenses, and now this curious case of Zeiss.

Carl Zeiss AG employs 43,000 people. Cosina employs 520 people. Only one of these firms makes lenses for the contemporary age of photography.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Zeiss_AG
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosina

(Interesting that the very first statement about Cosina mentions: 'Cosina is a manufacturer of high-end optical glass'.)

Yep, a lot of us miss Zeiss lenses. Their ZX1 digital camera didn’t quite make it, but their lenses are still known for great contrast and innovation. It’s a shame I don’t own many of them anymore. On the flip side, Cosina shows that even a small company can hit the highest technical levels, as their recent products prove. They also produce most of the Zeiss M-lenses.

The main difference is that Cosina focuses just on photography lenses, while Zeiss is into a bunch of things, including medical equipment, measuring tools, and semiconductor tech. I think Zeiss might actually have fewer employees now than what was mentioned.

I figure you could catch it ... releasing it, however, might be a different matter. I'd only be in if I felt like it would be something I'd want as an actual user because it "fits a need" kind of thing. Even then, I'd expect to take a bath on the "release".

Imo, it would be a costly "fun" thing to do.

If it hits strong in your wheelhouse, then it could be a good "odd duck" to keep around for a long time. Otherwise ... it's kinda Edsel territory, imo.

I think you’re correct. I’m curious but not *that* curious.

Would probably take a pretty big haircut on this even if getting in at $1500.

I’d rather have that $ go towards a 150-400 F4.5 Pro for the OM-1.

Update; Any consideration of the ZX is officially over. Lens incoming.

The Zeiss website mentions 20k emps in Germany, 43k total worldwide.
Frankly I’m surprised they are that big. But I think what this shows is how little the photography side matters to them.

Carl Zeiss Meditec was a direct competitor. If I could short that stock I would. Just took a peek at their 2024 numbers.

<Revenue in the Americas region decreased significantly by -13.0% (adjusted for currency effects: -11.9%) from €410.3m to €356.9m. In North America, in particular, demand in the devices business was below expectations.>

They conveniently left out any mention of the fact that their flagship optical coherence tomography device (Cirrus 6000) and their next gen OCT, the PlexElite have been recalled since 2021 and have yet to receive FDA clearance for approval to market in the US since that time. Oopsie.

The ZX-1 and the consumer lens business are simply a drop in the bucket to Zeiss.

I've got six CY lenses, five have been very much appreciated as near-constant companions over fifteen years. How great it would be for Zeiss to do a deal to have Cosina produce some of these designs in near unchanged form but with modern glass, coatings, casings and tolerances. They would be a revelation to so many who have never encountered 20th century Carl Zeiss AG in its heyday.

From its inception in 1975, that Contax Yashica range saw out the turn of the century. It heralded the end of Zeiss as we then knew it - a fine camera maker and prolific lens producer. The CY range held no fewer than forty four lenses by my count.

It absolutely dwarfed all other Carl Zeiss lens ranges, ever. All that followed were paltry lens ranges of a handful of lenses each. Cosina are masters of this kind of project, and the CZ heritage would be a great selling point.
