I'm already sold on the concept which I think points to the future.
If the ZX1 turns out to be a 35/2 IQ master, then I expect a very different tune from some of the emotions I've seen posted on this thread. Great IQ and under $3K might just be a stampede.
OTOH, brand new concept camera in a very crowded and rapidly dwindling market could be daunting. Although Leica faced a similar challenge with the Q2 even competed with the popular and less expensive Sony RX1 at the time and Q2 turned out to be a runaway success for Leica, hence the Q2.

Agreed, I'm quite excited about the ZX1 (apart from its size). Concept products are often viewed with an initial sense of skepticism, I'm sure Zeiss is aware of this, and tempering their expectations accordingly.
However, this camera is not a value proposition for Zeiss. It's a flagship, "first of its kind" and will be positioned as such... I would be surprised if it comes in under $4K.

It's not Leica..
They should make it a ZHSA special edition, limit total production to 30 units ever and they'd easily sell at $59,999 instead
And there'd be nobody to comment on any shortcomings

My guess is you can call time of death on the RX1 series as we know it. I could see it possibly being revived as a 28mm, but not 35mm.
The lens on the ZX1 might be excellent beyond what we imagined. But that wouldn't detract from the RX1 market IMHO. I feel like the RX1 has the size advantage and if Sony manages to jam more tech inside the RX1 line then we'd probably have a AF/speed/tracking advantage too. The only other thing I'd complain about at that point would be the battery life. USBC charging while camera is on would help with that issue tho and it's not beyond Sony to do it. Add great video and a flip up screen (though I hate them) and you're set for a good vlogging cam too!

Unfortunately I agree that the Rx1 series is probably dead. It's to bad because I think there is still a market for that camera. I would be quite happy with the exact same body of the Rii with the new 61mp, and all the new AF and internals. I would pre order that today. With the new processors they can probably squeeze alittle more life out of the battery. But carrying a couple spares was never a big deal to me. It was worth it to keep the form factor small. The ZX-1 is just to large and is not even a competitor to the RX1r series in my eyes.

Yeah but it's not dead because of the ZX1, it's dead because Sony is too busy making money off of lenses for the A7-series as well the Sony P&S that aren't exactly cheap but sell well.

Still a market for sure!
I agree. Despite the steep price, I think Sony lose money on the RX1 series cams. That could be sole reason.

Never implied it was because of the ZX1. In fact I don't even consider that a remotely viable alternative even if a miracle happens and it actually ships. Sony is going to be hard pressed moving forward with lenses (relying on high prices) because of the excellent 3rd party options. They will have to eventually circle back the Rx1 series because they are leaving money on the table.

They might of in the past. But an update to the same body with tech that is being used in existing body's should leave plenty of room for a profitable RxRiii.

There are several additions besides the EVF and LCD that makes the Rx1R II very different. The sensor, the liquid crystal variable AA, the vastly improved motherboard..while keeping the same small battery. Not a small task.
