I think if they used the used older MF sensor like Fuji and could keep it the size of ZX1 it would be unique and and would sell pretty well despite being more expensive. The extra image quality of MF sensor would make it worth it. Current ZX1 I doubt will have much more image quality than RX1/R and price will be higher. We will see how high next year I guess.

I am with you. Would love that MF sensor IQ in that package. Oh well.

The HB X1D is about the same size as the ZX1 with that same 50MP MF sensor as the Fuji.

Yeap but a 35/2 would be too big for that MF sensor. They would have to go with at 45/2.8 instead if 35mm equiv. was their goal.

For a full frame fixed 35/2 lens, its main competitor is the RX1RII and that's a huge difference in size/weight.

That X1D is one sweet looking camera. Too bad it's out of my price range...especially lenses.

True, the HB 45/3.5 is very very good. FOV/DOF equiv is 35/2.8.
I imagine there is at least one ~45 f/2.8 lens that will cover the HB sensor (albeit with some intense rolling shutter).

I will be shocked if the ZX1 is a lot cheaper than the X1D + 45mm.

Yes, Fuji has one (GF 45/2.8), it will cover the same Sony MF's sensor (33x44mm)..
Apparently an outstanding lens.

Sadly no way to adapt it to XCD mount and the GFX bodies are quite a bit bigger.

Seems like RX1 series is gonna get killed (?). Weak sales apparently.
Obviously this Zeiss is not gonna sell neither. Is anyone else gonna step up?

There is still the Leica Q. Image quality and autofocus seems to be very fine, but ergonomics are the issue. Personally I could make a very, very long list of changes I would do to a Q2:

- Most importantly, never ever silently engage electronic shutter if shutter speed exceeds 1/2000 sec. Thats a completely intolerable shortcoming even in a $400 camera. In a $4000 camera, yikes.
- Instead close the aperture if shutter speed cannot be handled by the leaf shutter anymore. You do the same if the focus gets too close, so why do something else (thats far worse) for too bright lighting situations.
- Allow up to 1/4000 sec both on the shutter dial and the automatic. However maximum aperture will drop accordingly if you exceed 1/2000 sec. The speeds above 1/2000 sec will be in another color (yellow?)
- If current aperture is lowered by close focus, too bright exposure, or too high shutter speed selected, the display of the aperture will turn into a signal color (yellow?)
- Consistently use half stops or third stops on aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, instead of some wild mix.
- In a camera this big and expensive, make it have a combined EVF/OVF like a Fujifilm X100. There should be sufficient space ?
- Drop to f2. Image quality needs to be maxed, not the aperture.
- Drop to 18 Megapixel. Not a camera for high resolution. Instead make it work well at high ISOs.
- Offer 2 lenses: 28mm and 35mm.
- Offer monochrome sensor variant.
- Keeo the 2 designs: classic Leica (silver and black) and stealthy Leica (black).
- Offer 2 layouts: touch backside monitor or no monitor. Even without monitor, you still have the EVF to configure the camera.
- Dual SD card slots with full speed backup mode. Yes, even Leica shooters deserve data security now. I'm shocked too.
- Drop macro ability. No point on a camera like this. You dont pick such a camera for macro. If you insist, at least add a ring flash so lighting is less of an issue with such a wide lens.
- Drop video ability. No point either.
- Drop IBIS. Again, really no point.
- Find actually useful applications for that single backside button thats placed this easily accessible than just stuff like AE lock and digital zoom. What about for example flash suppression, switch to electronic shutter, enable/disable backside monitor etc.
- Design it like the Leica T, make its housing mostly from a single part. No need to cut it from a full block though, or for aluminium; magnesium will do just fine.

Fuji w 50mm 3.5 @ 40mm 35mm equiv:

Fuji has a $1000 saving for lens combos till Dec 29, so new Fuji w/ 45mm 2.8 is selling for $5,199 or 63mm for $4,999:

They were selling the 63/2.8 for $149 and the 45/2.8 for $399 a couple days ago when bundled with the new 50R. This deal is unfortunately gone now:

I find that pic so misleading because everything is bigger!
The one clear part is the 62mm diameter filter thread which puts everything in perspective. the GFX50R is the size of a GF690 'Texas Leica'.

Would love to see the sensor coverage of the VM 40 or 50 on a GFX body.

Are you just guessing or do you have figures that suggests was sales? I am curious how well it sells.

I had all three items in my shopping cart but decided not to pull the trigger. In the end I think the IQ will be a minimal upgrade vs the A7R III, and the glass wasn't fast enough for me, the only lens I truely desire is the 110mm f/2, I think I am going to hold out for the upcoming 100mp medium format from Fuji, it has in body IS and that new SEXY sensor.

Steve Huff posted that recently:

"Many have been asking me about a replacement from Sony for the RX1RII and I do not believe one is coming. The RX1RII did not sell very well for them and I believe Sony’s sole focus today is on their A7 and A9 bodies and lenses. I could be wrong as I am not talking with any kind of insider knowledge but that is just what my gut tells me."

He does have insider knowledge at Sony.

A lot of us had this entire bundled in our shopping carts but failed to pull the trigger for the reasons you outlined.

I was never enticed from the first when I realized the size of the GFX50R MF sensor compared to the Sony FF 42MP. Mini MF so-to-speak and IMO very little difference in IQ overall. However, these currents discounts/bundles are almost too good to be true and certainly the time to jump in for those interested.

Yes, let's not forget that we here at FM make up a very tiny minority of Sony users and even though many here love the RX1R cameras does not mean overall it's a winner for Sony. It's definitely a niche product.

All these new mirrorless cameras and lenses hitting the market or soon to hit the market in 2019 is most likely going to cause some significant product strategy shift for sure. And hopefully a lot of price pressure too ;-)

I know. I just love my original Rx1R and wanted to upgrade, never did.
Now I don't know, spending $3300 on a 3 years old Rx1R2 doesn't make too much sense.
Let's see if the price goes down to $2K.
