Dynamic range about the same as 5D MKIII. Was kinda feeling crappy about switching to Nikon 2 days prior to 5Ds rumours, but now I know I made the right choice

I'm not and never was interested in a high MP camera (and was pretty much accused of lying about this from people who want high mp lol!).
I had my suspicions it'd be an upscaled 7d2 with some tweaks. I don't know what it says about canons sensor plans. As a wedding photographer, wide dynamic range is rarely of use so the 5d4 will still be of interest to me, although better quality pixels would of course be nice.
I actually understand the disappointment as it means another 3 years of waiting for canon to release the camera some of you want.
Canon should beware though - this lack of investment or even ability to work with sony for example could cost them as more and more people switch, either because they *want* or *need* more DR.
But I'll wait to see real tests before judging. ...Show more →
What this means to me is that I have no real need to upgrade, that's a good thing.
As far as I can see the ONLY reason to buy one of these is if you consistently print huge or crop a huge amount, neither of which I do. There are no other benefits at all except more pixels.
I can't see these selling well personally. I watched Westfall's video and frankly I think he almost seems apologetic, constantly referring to 'Canon' and not 'we'

I think this will be a great camera in it's own right.
For the studio photographer, this will be a hit no doubt.
Obviously in nor DR challenged scenes and with good glass and technique it will turn in stellar performance, but I seriously doubt it will offer much over a D810 IQ wise and in many cases it will get its arse kicked. It's becoming clear I'll only use Canon for sports cameras like 1D X and look at Sony for landscape etc. Sony will soon announce it's own MP monster(s) one will be SLT and I guess we can expect A7R II and I can use Canon glass. Sony will no doubt fix all the main issues with A7R.

As a manager of 3 repro studios thinking to transition from medium format digital (the backs are great, the cameras are a joke) I'm not touching it with a bargepole. The new colour array sounded good but the limited DR is a game breaker. I want to be able to do as much to the images as I can do with my medium format files without them breaking up. I used to own a 5D3. Doesn't come close. Our D800e's do come close enough however are lacking in resolution. Waiting to see what the Sony A9 will be like.
One thing that I'm not sure anyone has mentioned, are the lenses up to it? This week I tested the Nikkor 60mm and 105mm Macro lenses vs an old manual Mamiya 80mm Macro on one of our D800e's. The far older lens bests the modern Nikkor's in the corners with ease for sharpness, contrast and lack of CA/fringing. That's on 36 megapixels against lenses designed for flat field performance. I have a feeling that 50 megapixels will not require new lenses but a different type of lens design to fully maximise its potential. Just as the medium format crowd turned to Digitar lenses on tech cameras with their backs.

I'm sure the 5Dsr is going to be amazing for landscape photography. I'm so glad I maintained the patience and faith in Canon to deliver and didn't start buying into Sony gear I've already put my name down at my camera store. Pity I have to wait till June as I have a 1 week trip coming up in April I could have use it

A feature of the 5DS/R being a super-sized 7D2 in some ways
is that you can crop it to 7DII dimensions for wild-life to gain
the 1.6x factor but have the full-frame for lots of other kinds
of work. I think I could really enjoy this aspect.
Before it was announced I was thinking the same thing, but 5fps is a bit limiting for action (although you can work around it a bit), butI think I'd rather have a 7D II and Sony A7R II fro similar combined price.

I'm confused. Did I just click the link for DPR or am I having a bad dream? Sometimes I think Nikon/Sony have paid shills on this board now. And I wish one person could show me one photo where the 'reduced DR' made any shot that was properly made, unusable. This whole DR topic could be a clever ploy by the competition to try and scare away the ignorant and the gullible. I'm not disputing the science behind the argument - I'm disputing the argument itself.

Best not to start this up again.
I'm in your camp, there's nothing wrong with the DR of the cameras we have but that holds very little sway round here. As I've often said, show me the reproduced image that had to be taken on a 'high DR camera' and as yet no-one has.
I think the real reason so many go on about this is they can manipulate files to a much larger extent (which is true) but if you get the shot right in the first place there's very little advantage IMHO.
This perceived shortfall has never stopped Canon selling far more cameras than anyone else though.

I have heaps.
I have stood next to D810 users watch them shoot scenes with no grads where I am struggling. They just push the shadows in post and it comes up like magic.
I dont process or publish all these lost images. After all why should I.

I agree. I've never had any complaints about DR in any of my properly exposed shots.

And you yourself have said that you could achieve the same results but it's just a little harder.
This isn't the thread for this, we need to get back to bashing the really disappointing new offerings (and that's from a Canon fan)

I dont think the new cameras are that bad, its just we have all been waiting for canon to address the dr issue for so long.
And all they give us is 50mp!
Which to be honest isnt bad..
That was the point of my first post, they give us 50 meg of exactly the same.
I don't find myself pixel-limited now, I recently had some wall-sized prints made from 1Ds3 files and they are great, I have no reason to need more pixels and slow my PC down.
I think I am part of the target market, I do high quality industrial stuff and I still have no real interest in these cameras, so a bit of a fail for me.

May I ask what you wanted? You are not interested in more resolution, not in more dynamic range, not in higher frame rate, and the quantum efficiency of the 7DII pixels is state of the art.

So I guess those of you accusing anyone who doesn't share your blind loyalty to Canon of having blind loyalty to someone else have never heard of irony, huh? Just to double down on my comment from a few pages ago that this is NOT a brand flame war and that Nikon is just as stuck in the mud of being too lazy and complacent to innovate as Canon, a just published rumor suggests that Nikon will be pathetically carrying over the same processor from the D4s in the D5 (although, contrary to some on the Nikon forum, I'm not troubled that they only increased the resolution slightly [from 16 to 20 megapixels]).
