on that portrait shot (D800 vs 5Ds), I saw this few days ago and i think the aperture was f8. But why is it the whole image was not in focus?

Let it finish loading, both are in focus ... it is impressive to see so many details on both cameras.

Great example, pity the model is not the same one but hey, we cannot ask for more at this moment.

Thank you mttran

I have a little question and I hope is not a RTFM one.

Would it be wise from Canon to introduce a hybrid viewfinder? I say that because some complain about LV battery life, but they use LV to raise the mirror and avoid moved pictures.

essential asked the same question.....

The sample image of the model in white .... am I the only one who is questioning the f8?
Her face is in focus but the earring on her right ear is out of focus.
and most of the top part of the dress (her left)is out of focus and nearly blown out.

Considering the cropping includes space around her face ... this feels more like f4.
My expectation would be able to see just about everything in focus.

The model photograph was a head and shoulders portrait @ 170mm so DOF is thin. Additionally, as pixel density increases the viewing magnification at 1:1 increases along with it, which reduces the effective DOF as DOF is a perceptual measurement based on viewing distance and magnification. This is one of the conundrums of higher MP imaging esp for DOF-limited shooting scenarios where you have to stop down; more MP means a smaller CoC which means a smaller aperture but higher MP also means diffraction effects become more noticeable at 1:1 at smaller apertures so you have a limited range of apertures to work with to extract the maximum acuity from the sensor.

Yeh, that's my thoughts. I can get a nice used Nikon 14-24 for under $1500.

You've gotta look at aperture relative to focal length when determining value. I bet 11mm f/4 is more expensive/difficult to make than 14mm f/2.8 (and even [if not especially] moderate-focal-length f/1.4's). 11-24 is also a rather wide range. This is not a bad value.

On the other hand, it'll be a bad investment for many people because they simply don't need something this wide.

Dynamic range really isn't that big a deal for landscape shooters, how do you think we managed with slide film?

Landscapes don't move so are easily shot with brackets if need be.

You and many others are confusing necessity with convenience. A lot of that round here.

Landscapes don't move...that's a good one. Now I understand why you don't understand why improved DR is such a big deal for landscape photographers. We all don't shoot static rocks...there are many...many situations where I cannot merge multiple images due to movements in my landscape photos.

If we all had your view, then

1. Why do we need high ISO...we used to make great photos using 100 ASA film.
2. Why do we need 12fps when we used to make great sports photos in single shot mode.
3. Why do we need auto focus when we made great photos manually focusing.

Get the point?....

Yeh there is...but for me, I just don't see using the lens at the extreme very much at all. Even 14mm is more than enough for my photography style. I can see if one needs something wider than 14mm, then this lens might make sense. I guess people need to weigh the extra $1500 versus the need to shoot down to 11mm. Maybe getting by stitching to get wider?

It's just a one up making it 11mm. I've shot 12mm on ff it's insanely wide. Too much for most I'd bet. Not terrible for tight interiors though.

I agree chez broader dr helps with landscapes. The 14 ev you get out of the a7r sometimes isn't enough but sometimes it's just enough to get your shot without bracketing. Stuff like clouds, trees blowing, water, and other stuff like sometimes look terrible when you bracket. I had a shot of a wheat field that I bracketed with my d800 I ended up using a single exposure and because the wheat looked all jacked up after merging

I might be the only one focusing on colours and tones but it has been discussed before and testers are talking about an improved color filter array and that it seems to be more like the 1Ds Mark III.

The JPEGS so far doesn't really confirm the 1Ds claims. Don't get me wrong - some of those 5Ds files are gorgeous. But when looking at the sunset images (lots of those) I get the same "cyan/babyblue with hint of magenta vs warm-orange hue" that is often present in the 5D Mark 3. Now there are millions of ways to process a RAW file with different profiles and clearly these are more balanced out of camera compared to the 5D mark 3 (shadows, mids and highs seem to be well controlled colorwise)

But I don't get that 1Ds3 feeling. There's no right or wrong here....just an observation. Of course, once RAW files are out and more daylight shots available, it will be easier to compare.

I have a 14 Samyang, now for sale because I ordered the 11-24. I have several scenes that are not possible to shoot with any lens I own, not even 14, or 17TSE unless I make a pano.

I use the 17TSE shifted frequently to avoid pointing the camera up and getting distortion. An 11 ought to allow level shots to be cropped later. I often want a pano crop anyway, and a level shot when standing at the bottom of Zion Canyon will have too much foreground and fail to show the tops of the cliff. 11 mm ought to allow level or close to level with the foreground cropped out.

But it also covers the ranges I don't have now, 11-16.

Coupled with a 24-70 it covers my entire range for landscapes.

And AF, thats a real plus for me.

Ben :

If you ever want to do any Milky Way / nightscape shooting, consider hanging onto your Samyang 14mm. For these type of shots, having an f 2.8 lenses will allow you to use ISO 3200 instead of ISO 6400. I was a little disappointed Canon only made the11-24mm an f4 lens, because this makes it less valuable for nighttime shots.

Ben, I agree with Ed. at an average used price of 250, I will keep it just to use for nightscapes.
corner to corner sharpness with little coma, at 2.8 and ultrawide with very little CA is pretty hard to come buy, and even harder at 250
