I'm confused. Did I just click the link for DPR or am I having a bad dream? Sometimes I think Nikon/Sony have paid shills on this board now. This whole DR topic could be a clever ploy by the competition to try and scare away the ignorant and the gullible. This is so silly I'm not even going to bother posting the images...

Take a photo in suboptimal light, convert it to BW with a digital redfilter. Now it will be ok except when you lift the shadows just a little bit...
not meant as a provocation, just giving an example where you are going to see the DR limit of Canon

Sadly, I can confirm this is the Canon Forum and that you are conscious. You should really sit back and congratulate yourself on the fact that your vision, timing, awareness of lighting and gear satisfy your needs. The alternative would be to join the same old familiar posters lining up to vent their spleen and dismay on Canon's shortcomings, whilst being seemingly oblivious to their own.

Stating that the gear we happen to be using does the job perfectly well is not a sign of weakness or stupidity. It's a statement that the money is still coming in even with this supposedly inferior (but yet strangely incredibly popular) gear.

Me too...... and like a hippo there is a big butt If this new sensor is just an upscaled 7D2 sensor (to simplify it) with the same performance (low ISO dynamic range starts with an 11, not a 14, shadows etc), imHo its an embarrassment. Canon shooters have another cycle of updates to wait for a sensor that's might compete with Sony. It doesn't even bode well for the 5Dmk4

Canon appears to be trying to switch their strategy and make cameras for niches instead of a jack of all trades. Obviously, this camera is not filling the niche you're interested in.
They have apparently kicked the landscape niche in the teeth with steel toecapped boots. "Here have a super expensive 11-24mm lens for your 11.5 stops of dynamic range super 50mp camera" I'm certainly not forking out £3000 for what is effectively a FF 7Dmk2, but I'm "sure" those who buy these two cameras will be happy and produce great images

I used to shoot a lot of HDR images (multiple exposures taken at different shutter speeds, blended together tastefully, not tonemapped to death in Photomatix). I even bought a 1D mkIV so I could shoot at 10fps to reduce the problem of movement between shots. It was a lot of extra effort but I felt it was worth it.
I appreciate many people don't feel at all constricted by the dynamic range available from their Canon sensors. And why would they - everyone is used to the fact you can't just whack the sliders all the way up to 100 or take a massively underexposed shot and expect to produce something good from it.
Last year I decided to supplement my collection of Canon DSLRs with a Sony A7R, for reasons of size, resolution, and DR. After shooting with it for a year I'll admit most of the time I don't notice a big difference, but every now and then I do something during RAW conversion, like whack the shadows slider all the way up on a whim, expecting to see a mess and instead I just get something that just looks like the rest of the photo. And then I'm like "oh yeah I forgot, I have a Sony sensor now, I don't have to be conservative when processing RAWs!"
It has genuinely caused me to say "wow!" on a few occasions. That's what I expect from an investment of thousands. I don't exposure bracket shots any more, sold the 1D mkIV.
It's not about shots being "unusable", or "impossible" without extended DR, it just increases your options and makes shooting and editing nicer. Until you've experienced it for a while I would hold off on dismissing the advantages.
I am very pleased Canon now has a high resolution offering, I hope the people putting in preorders are happy with it, but I wont buy another Canon [camera] until they can offer what I've now come to expect from Sony sensors, especially in a body that is otherwise heavily tailored to travel and landscape photography.

So the DR has is the same as a camera released in 2012. What's 3 years in digital cameras?
So the iso only goes up to 6400. Ok - its a tripod camera.
So the sensor is an upsized 7d2, but without the dual-pixel af.
So it's not 4k with hdmi out, but whatever.
So they beef up the tripod mount, enable (after 10 years of users griping) a good MLU solution, but then don't put an EFC on their hi-res flagship? Fixing two out of three sources of shutter shake ain't bad.

Canon cameras have had EFCS for years. Just shoot from LV. Thanks for the info that they beefed up the tripod mount. Makes it even better for me.

Just read about the new release, and agree to the criticism mentioned earlier. So glad that I decided last year to move on with the A7R!
Just happy that Canon finally at least tried something in regard to high MP. So now let's see what Sony has in its pockets regarding new high MP AND DR sensor...

Crazy how many negative comments there are about a camera that isn't even out yet. Lordy!
I have to ask, why would anyone spend 4 grand on a 50mp camera and then use a crop mode? Let alone complain about frame rates not being fast enough. Don't they already have cameras for that kind of work?
Why not use the right tool for the job? If this is the only camera you have in your bag for professional use, you need to rethink your bag if you want a crop sensor, or lower resolution.

Nikon have been putting crop modes in the FX bodies for years. Comments based on the official press release and interviews by official Canon spokemen (CW) are quite appropriate IMO. Canon Explorer, David Noton, who has been testing the 5DS did say in a Facebook comment that "the proof is in the pudding, the results need to be seen to be believed". I then asked him if that meant the 5DS is a direct and viable alternative (apart from the 14mp difference) for the D810. No answer as yet

No reason to "bitch" - I wouldn't have considered purchasing the Canon 5 DsR even it had a better sensor as hoped/expected regarding DR because I will stick to mirrorless. Again, credit to Canon that they at least developed a 50 MP sensor based on the old 0.5 micrometer process generation. In fact I really hoped that Canon would bring out something great here in this camera that Sony would have some competition with the A7R II or A9 in the future....looks like this is not really the case which might drive prices up for future Sony models which is unfortunate.

That's part of the problem. Predictability and lack of real innovation. New releases used to have unexpected new features, like live view or HD video. Nowadays with Canon it's same sensor design, more megapixels. You know exactly what to expect in terms of noise and dynamic range, so there's no need to wait for the camera to be released.

They had the opportunity to allow both fast crop shooting for sports and full frame high resolution shooting for studio/landscapes in the same body. This would be groundbreaking as no-one has truly offered APS-C pixel density in a full frame sensor before.

More tools means higher cost. Cameras not just for professionals.

So why are you here telling us this? Do you think anyone other than yourself really care what you do/did/will do in the future? I can only speak for myself but I for sure get tired of hearing it over and over ad nauseam. Isn't there a Sony forum here somewhere?

This is a gear forum and the users can say what they like (or more usually dislike) about the Canon system.
It's telling the rest of us our gear is somehow useless/obsolete/sub-standard that I have an issue with, because it isn't.
When Nikon and Sony are comfortably out-selling Canon then perhaps they'll have some sort of case
