I've never had a camera that produces for sports like the 1Dx. The famous Canon colors, speed and ridiculous keeper rate at 10 fps impresses me every time I shoot. Even if the 5DsR turns out to be better than expected I'll have a hard time selling the 1Dx. Justifying the expense is a whole other matter...

Holy crap, some people on here...
First off - Fred Miranda, thank you for spending so much of your valuable time and efforts to give us such a great forum and place to get the inside scoop before most of the market.
Second, does Canon prefer Cash check or credit card?
As a studio shooter, the money can't fly out my wallet fast enough. I have shot lord knows how many tens of thousands of shots and I've never had a problem with DR.
Let me save 50 pages of crap for everyone. Canon folks will love this. Nikon and Sony people will bitch.

As a landscape photographer I am very interested in this camera.
Pre-ordered a 5DsR from my dealer earlier today specifically for my landscape work. I loved shooting the D800e and miss the resolution and DR but not the greens and yellows. Canon colors are what made me switch from Nikon last year. I'm confident the "R" will deliver for landscape / cityscapes and portraits when paired with the Zeiss 135, 17 TS-E (super excited for this lens), 24-70 and 70-200. No doubt. Glass half-full...

Are you reading the same thread as I am?
Yes, and there seems to be a lot of folks lamenting "it's just a FF 7D2" and "the DR is the same" Yes there are also lots of people excited. I know. I'm one of them

Canon appears to be trying to switch their strategy and make cameras for niches instead of a jack of all trades. Obviously, this camera is not filling the niche you're interested in.
It seems like a small niche if the camera has a noisy, low DR sensor AND all the other limitations.

Looking for more info:
Any mention about better weather sealing like 7d2?
Any mention about taking 3rd party OVF screens or Canon Ee-s for better manual focusing of fast lenses like my Otus 55?

When I guessed that Canon's new FF high resolution camera would be a supersized 7DII, I got flamed for not believeing than Canon could do this and that.
When I said that a supersized 7DII would be fine for me because of the very low thermal noise, eliminating the need for long exposure NR, I got flamed for not wanting more dynamic range.
It is not true that the 5Ds will have the same dynamic range as the 5D3. The normalized DR will be around 13 Ev, the highest for any Canon sensored camera yet. That is because the fixed pattern noise is eliminated, and downsampling to resolutions like 22 MP wil reduce the noise. All assuming the same pixel quality as the 7DII.
The Sony A7r is a fine camera, but it has its little quirks as well. They have all been discussed on the Alternative and Sony boards. Canon as we know it does not have those same quirks, there is always give and take. This time I will take the 5Ds. It may be my last Canon camera.

wish people would stop using the word crippled, its called feature set, unless you are involved with the design and engineering of this camera, its silly to say its crippled without hard evidence to back it up,to me there is a reason of only 6400 iso and if you cant figure this out maybe photography isnt why you want this camera but being a spec geek, just like gun nuts and and ham radio people,a new model comes out and everyone say hey this must be cripple,it doesnt have 256,000 iso and 13 stops of DR in coal mine taking a pic of a black cat under a match light.

I would not use the R for cityscapes due to the aliasing.
Almost too much resolution for portraits, especially showing skin / makeup flaws.
Of course down-sampling is easy. It should be fabulous for environmental
portraiture where the person may occupy a smaller part of the frame.

A feature of the 5DS/R being a super-sized 7D2 in some ways
is that you can crop it to 7DII dimensions for wild-life to gain
the 1.6x factor but have the full-frame for lots of other kinds
of work. I think I could really enjoy this aspect.
