Planning way ahead is also a psychological problem ... bordering on OCD

no, its making sure when the job needs to be done it's done correctly. working out the possibilities so it can be resolved in a safe and timely manner. you call it possible OCD many call it professionalism. i think you'd really like me to prepare in my job to do it correctly, believe me you do. "way ahead" can be but a few hours. or a few weeks. it's irrelevent when you take pride in what you do and demonstrate it with the results. it carries through in my imaging work that i do outside of my day job.

What; you don't just hold those things together with baling wire and chewing gum?

I think there is a faulty assumption that the overall sales decrease significantly because the stores are closed. I suspect that sales are higher in the leading and trailing weeks to make up for much of that. Most people follow habitual patterns and after many positive experiences with vendors they usually stick with the same ones for the most part.

At work I have to plan a few years ahead for many projects. There are several projects that I have been working on since the 1990s and will not be finished for 3-4 more years. Poor planning today will delay something down the line and may cost millions.

Way to go.
Actually they can choose to go out of business because of their faith---actually I doubt it, but it is an option---But they are doing well. So it goes back to my first idea: there isn't enough competition .

oh, i am fully aware of that idea. my new project is a result of the past 10 years of Boeings work and is still on going and evolving. i watched a few "slip and falls" on their part in that time. my part will most likely end with my retirement but i will be easily replaced as we all eventually are. and thats looking to be about 10 more yrs.
my poor planning ends up costing my time companies time customers time and lots of money too and unfortunately most of the time it's a little more immediate.

My office is just a few blocks from the Everett plant; I've watched everything from the first 747 to the first Dreamliner roll out of that place over the years.

i just spent most of this summer learning the 787 down at Longacres. quite the flying machine. when i was up in Everett over on the 747-8 line floor you hear them bucking rivets. on the 787 line you hear the occasional drill motor but for the most part its the quietest build line i've ever been around

"At Adorama we do appreciate that our closing times can be inconvenient to some of our potential customers.

Adorama's owner is an observant orthodox Jewish gentleman, whose beliefs prohibit him - his family and his business - from operating on the Sabbath and on many of the religious holidays (which all begin an hour prior to sunset the evening before the day of the holiday, which is why we close early on Fridays).

We can't employ non-Jews here during those days, because to do so would involve the company conducting business - which is forbidden

Not any more. When I was a search & rescue officer in the Air Force Auxilliary my squadron was based at Paine Field, but it was decommisioned years ago.

My current office is on Kasch Park Road, two blocks south of the Boeing Freeway and one block east of Airport Road.

in life, for many, some things carry through.

one of my favorite lines from a movie goes like this:

"if you can't to something smart, do something right"- Shepard Book from the film Serenity

If business slows down, and the bottom line suffers, I bet they woould work any day including the Lord's day to make a buck.

The internet is filled with camera stores, so it's not a lack of competition. OR do you mean honest, reliable and trustworthy competition?

Would you rather B&H and Adorama become just a couple more schlock merchants that are open 24/7/365?

I've been dealing with both stores for several years now, and have always been happy with the service they provide. I want to keep it that way.

Yep. Skip, Murray and Jan

Skips still the figurehead down in California at VF the owner. Murray wandered off and i'm not quite sure what Jan ended up doing after the sale to VF. i stay in contact with Skip every now and then. throw the occasional xmas card back and forth. really good people.

i also remember back then an "air car" prototype maker just on backside building from them too. forgot the name.

Well, I think there's plenty but my opinion may be tainted by my perspective. :-)

If business slows down, and the bottom line suffers, I bet they woould work any day including the Lord's day to make a buck.

I'll take that bet. Our owner wouldn't violate the Sabbath, or other requirements of observation, for any reason or motive AT ALL and certainly not for a buck's profit.

I want to say I appreciate the majority of replies here whose support for our owner's decision is gratifying and much appreciated. As to the other few, well the less said the better IMO.

For those genuinely curious, Sukkot is a multi day holiday. The first two and last two are major days and require Sabbath-like observation. The intermediate days, if not Sabbath, are called Chol HaMoed. Observation restrictions are more limited and certain types of work are permitted. That's why I can post here today but could not Thur or Fri (or Saturday, obviously).

I really don't think it's necessary for me to reply to each post here individually, so for the time being I'll leave it at this.

A personal observation. I've never asked Fred to delete a post or a thread, and won't here, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he took it upon himself to do so. If he does, it was not because of anything coming from me.

Henryp

this sort of junk comes up every year and fades to the usual nothingness.

this is the way you've done it over the past 35 years i have done business with B&H and i respect it.

i hope you all had a good holiday.
