closing for that kind of holiday, for periods that long, is disrespectful of their customers who don't believe in that religion (whatever holiday we're talking about)
Announcing it in advance doesn't excuse it.
Hahaha....oh, sorry. I thought you were making a joke. Customers show how they feel with their dollars. Evidently B&H has a lot of customers that don't feel the way you do.

Once again B&H has lost my recent 1k+ purchase. I know they are announcing their closings, but seriously...Wednesday to Sunday? They must be losing a lot of revenue for these closings.
Now if only ANY store in the state of missouri stocked the 135L...

Someone remind me in a couple of months to get all offended that pretty much nothing is open on Christmas.
It's so disrespectful of stores not to let us heathens go shopping on Christmas if we want to!
Christmas is a Sunday Even then. One day is different than 5 days. I even get frustrated when things are closed on protestant holidays and I grew up in the church!
Oh and BTW. This has nothing to do with religion. I could care less about the reason, I just know that as a business person, closing a major company with thousands of clients can't be good for business. Obviously there are a lot of opinions on this since it has had MASSIVE response here on the boards.
It has everything to do with religion. You obviously still don't realize why they are closing even though many folks have tried to explain it to you. Thankfully, there are still some businesses like B&H left.

The only "MASSIVE response" I see is people chiming in to tell the two people critical of B&H to get over themselves. I'll add my voice: get over yourself. B&H and Adorama are honorable companies, and have proven that for many years. More power to them.
I've got a package coming from them today -- I knew they were closing, and placed it in plenty of time to get it when I wanted it. No big deal.

It must be good for business if they are still doing business and have a massive load of customers who still purchase from them

Let me clarify to some respondents who may not have read the entire thread...although Drew's initial opening post may or may not appear to be insensitive, it was actually ANOTHER member's reply that totally trampled the insensitivity line! I can see & understand Drew's initial post (even if I disagree with it) from a practicality/business point of view but he didn't outright call out anyone's religous views. It was another member's reply that equated religious views & policy with "disrespect"! That guy ...the one with the "disrespect" reply is a real idiot!
drew.bowser wrote:

Actually, it has EVERYTHING to do with religion; it's why they're closed, after all. The fact that YOU don't care about the reason doesn't change the reason.
Oh and BTW...the expression is "I couldn't care less." Think about it. (Hint: nothing is less than zero.)
If you don't like the fact that the owners of BH take their religious values seriously, there are always other vendors, so what's the problem? Adorama would love to fill in....
I'm not Jewish, I not much of anything, but I respect a company that actually has values and observes them, even if they aren't my own. BH closings have been inconvenient for me over the years, and yet it is just not that big of a deal.

Why does religion automatically deserve everyone's respect? Do not forget that religion does not respect the beliefs of another religion, or the beliefs of the non-religious. Not so long ago, for example, one suggesting that the sun did not orbit the earth was subject to torture and murder. We need to question religion and avoid its exemption from criticism.
Grant, you may be uninvolved in religion, but if you have read the holy books of the main monotheisms, I would think it difficult for you to say they earn your respect.

Shame on you for your bigoted insensitivity! Talk about disrespect!
My respect for B&H's decisions doesn't come from an inherent respect of religion (I'm not religious), but from a respect for a private company's right to set its schedule as it sees fit. In my experience, B&H has always demonstrated itself to be honorable, and it seems petty to give them a hard time over this.
The sum total of what they're doing is saying that they choose not to conduct business during the holidays. They're not declaring a holy days sale, and dedicating all their profits from this week to "X' charity or political cause; they're not proselytizing; they're not holding special hours for fellow believers; they're not running a faith-based photo school using public resources; they're not offering special believer-only discounts. They're not doing any number of things which might be understandably seen as offensive or in bad taste.
They're just shutting down their store so they and their observant employees can follow their own religious traditions. That's it.

I don't think it's automatic respect he was speaking of unless he considers torture and murder to be values.
I do think there is something to be said for a company that chooses to peacefully follow it's religion then opt to just make more money regardless of what religion they are.
There are already enough companies out there that are just about the money. those companies tend to have crappy return policies.

"Religion" may not automatically deserve respect, but what about the respect of the individual as a person? Should we not respect a person and not rise up against his or her actions taken as a result of his or her beliefs so long as they don't infringe on our own?
Further, while you may believe that [unspecified] religion(s) doen't respect other religions, the truth is that most religions teach respect for others, even those who believe differently. We may believe that another person is incorrect in their beliefs, but we still respect them as a person. In fact, love of our fellows is why we attempt conversions...to save others.

Have you tried Schiller's, in St. Louis.. They have always had what I wanted..

Religion is man 's attempt at "Christianity".. Christianity is living "God Like" or trying to live right.. Matthew 22 : 37-40 are verses that outline why B&H cares so deeply for their beliefs...
Funny, I thought money was the most important thing to all Americans. What an ignorent and offensive remark about Jews.Perpetuating racial stereotypes should be unacceptable on this forum!

Actually Laura,
I agree with you regarding organized religion, but my golden rule is to live and let live. I do question everything. To wit: the recent Christian conservative that called the Mormons a cult with regard to Romney. Now that is intolerance! Imagine that this persons view is so narrow, that a person from another faith can't fairly represent him as a secular leader. That same idiot would call me a heathen, so I don't figure he is my friend. But this isn't about the right or wrong of religion; you miss the point. The owners of BH chose to regard their holy days as well....holy. I may not agree with their religious views, I respect them for being faithful to their beliefs. They are not espousing their religion, just observing it.

You didn't include a quote to specify what remark you found offensive, but if it was Tanglefoot's, he wasn't perpetuating a racial stereotype, he was pointing out that the B&H closing is an example of how the stereotype is not true.
Everytime B&H is closed, whether it be on Sabbath or a holiday, I wait and order when they are open, no loss of business.
Everyone wants 24/7 EVERYTHING. Do you get mad when you favorite restuarant isnt open at 3am? No, because all businesses have to be closed at some point. What about Home Depot? if your toilet breaks do you complain because they arent open at that exact time that you need a new one? No! you turn off the water and deal with it till you can fix it.
