I could just change the name of this one. Other than the first few pages about the 400d/50/70-200, it all still applies...

I just have a laugh. After 240 pages 'i heard this, i heard that' there is nothing coming! hahaha.

I suspect whatever they have in the works will be getting pics at the Superbowl, and then announcement of course at PMA. For sure they wouldn't go a full year without a big announcement.

Jeff, got that thread title changed yet? haha.

Oh, come on. We're talking about a couple of days here. I think you can handle the wait. You already have a 350D that does everything a 30D does anyway.

Bang on.

Except 5fps, buffer 30 jpeg shots, offer spot metering, ISO levels in 1/3 stops, focus with 9 points and display it all on a 2.5" screen etc...

Look for Canon to make a big announcement on the last day of Photokina, in the last hour, as they're packing up their booth. You heard it here first, folks.

I would have to agree.
This event is terrible.
No excitement here whatsoever.
Can you imagine, a world-wide event
Where the Canon/Nikon teams announce an Entry-Level DSLR, big whoop...
If I were CEO, I'd be making serious changes with the Development Teams for this technological failure, and embarrassment.

It just shows how many sheep there are on the internet, all hoping to follow a (misguided) leader to the promissed land of new gear.

There may be no excitement in this show for YOU, but for many there is true excitement in the launch of new products that THEY were interested in. Those same people would say 'so what?' to a 22MP camera!

Once Canon anounced that there was no more DLSRs coming this year, that was that. Why did so many of you continue to hope that they were some how not telling the truth? Just because one or two people decided they didn't want to beleive it and posted that there 'must' be something new coming, so many people blindly followed....

Come on guys, don't be a sheep, come back to the real world!

Oh, Come on DAVE, get a life.

There is need for a 1Ds3 !!!

It still is hard for me to believe that Canon comes to a bi-annual world-wide technology show with only an entry level camera to show for it. There is a story there, yet to be told. Perhaps, they'll come in with a surprise DURING the event that would wake every one up... Anyway, for those that desire..

A. Print 13x19" @ 300dpi, it requires 22.23MP, Which also means that I produce 16x24" prints at 240dpi; I need this capability, and do not want to turn to medium-format to get this resolving capability.

B. Good performance at ISO 3200 would be Wonderful, for available light, quality, high resolution photography.

C. 3" OLED screen would be excellent so we can really see the proof shots during/while on locaiton.

D. Migrate to LiON batteries, use the batts in the 5D, perhaps 2 of them to get the weight down a bit and standardize on the 5D batteries.

E. Convert 580EX to LiOn batts used in the 5D, get some uniformity in the battery systems, and get off the AA's forever, have a magazine capability for the off-road backpackers, hard news hounds, that cannot get to power to charge their batts.

F. Press, Law enforcement, Insurance, Government, Military, world-wide needs GPS in high resolution 1Ds cameras, built-in, writing into EXIF file headders. Canon could build GPS into the main board, or use the Card #2 slot, (change 2nd card slot to CF; SD users can use CF-to-SD adapters) with a small antenna plug/wire for a flash-shoe mounting the SMALL horizontal antenna; (so the 580EX could mount onto top) GARMIN has shown they have an excellent very sensititive antenna on their new 60 and 70 series handhelds. Also this GPU unit needs to auto-set the Camera's internal clock.

G. Improved anto focus, and tracking for moving objects, and sports. All I need is bursts of 3 shots, at fast frame rate. The first shots is usually best anyway.

That's my short list for the 1Ds3... of the future, whenever that is The sooner the better. For those that compete in this business, I need the very best tools I can get my hands on, which is why I turned to Canon 10 years ago. (from Nikon and Hasselblad for 20 years).

Once Canon anounced that there was no more DLSRs coming this year, that was that.

Except Canon didn't announce anything. Leaks and rumors of the same sort that fueled the speculation is all we got. It's hardly surprising that some chose to cling to hope rather than accept rumors to the contrary at face value. After the 2nd set of announcements from Canon, I was quite pessimistic that they would announce any other new DSLRs for Photokina, so I wasn't devastated by the lack of an announcement. I do think it represents a marketing challenge of sorts; an entry level camera that out-resolves your mid-level camera, and nothing else until you get to the quite dearly priced 5D. It's a great opportunity for the competition, which is perhaps in everyone's best interest.

It's an open question as to whether Canon is faltering or simply experiencing a delay in introducing something revolutionary. Only time will tell.

All you guys salivating with your wallets full of cash held open just hoping Canon would announce another camera that you can upgrade to. Talk about a manufacturer having their marketing done just right. They will bleed out their cameras one at a time with everyone jumping on the next camera not wanting to be left behind. They will not blow their entire R&D effort on just one big upgrade. They will want to get every dollar out of your pockets as they slowly come out with new features. I'm sure they already have new prototypes out for the 2010 Photokina, but won't release that camera until they had released the previous 10 versions.

Wow... the air must be thin up there in the BC.
My guess is that Canon has many prototypes they have been working on; however they are too expensive to bring to market. It takes time, engineering, and money to bring these high technology items to market at targeted price points, which have been dropping by big percentages in the past 10 years. I owned one of those $25,000 6MP Canon/Kodak j/v cameras in 1998. The batteries were $1000 each.

Now the Canon entry level camera is 7% of that price, and better performing...
Do you think that was in their PLAN. Or, your devious plan of taking advangtage of the buying public, which is your insinuation...

That may be true, but having spent a lot of time in the last 6 months actually working with my XT on a near daily basis, i've really kicked myself for not buying the 20D (which I could have, but I was trying to save money). The larger body, spot metering, larger LCD, the bigger viewfinder, and the second control wheel will make all the world of difference to me in just working with the camera (and these are really mainly physical feature differences, not "technology" per se). I think I would be happy with the 30D until I can afford to move up to a full frame setup. The only things about a 40D that would piss me off would be a native 3200ISO, >10MP jump, and a 16bit DR, but I'll live.

I primarily want to do a good upgrade now to get a better "feeling" camera and then go back to focusing on glass. I'm actually selling my 28-105 w/ my XT tomorrow to a coworker and plan on "replacing" it by adding the 85 1.8 and then the 24-70 2.8 early next year.

Also keep in mind that the introduction of the 40D will likely mean price drops/rebates on the 30D, and we all enjoy saving money!

Interesting strategy, but it's a gamble when there's a D200 and the like around. The "bleeding out upgrades" strategy only works well in a market without competition. And in the market, at least around the XTi and 30D, there's plenty of competition. The XTi rose to the competition, while the 30D didn't.

The 30D produces excellent images while in good hands. It's a great camera, no doubt. But it is slowly losing its competitive edge. And that is an issue, not so much to me, but to Canon in general. While the IQ of the 30D is at least as good as its competitors (better at high ISO, though the advantage may be shrinking), the things that sell cameras to the masses are those items that can be easily memorized by the sales zombies at the local Best Buys outlet. 10 megapixels. Sensor cleaning. Anti-shake. Weather resistant.

Some of those features may be advantageous, or they may be marketing gimmics. But they will sell, regardless.

You make an excellent point. This is probably the biggest difference between film and digital. Back when we shot film, it didn't matter what camera you had because the recording medium was independent of your body. Us amateurs could buy the same film the pros used. Back then we focused on glass more so than bodies. People upgraded camera bodies when they needed more FPS or they needed spot metering or they just plain wore their current body out. I still have my Elan IIe that I purchased in 1998 for $350 and it still shoots film as well as it ever did. There wasn't nearly as big of a reason for me to run out and upgrade bodies on a regular basis. Now Canon/Nikon/whomever has me wanting to upgrade every 1.5-2 years because my images can look better! Things like FPS and spot metering no longer become the driving factor of the camera, so I can have high FPS and spot on the next to lowest end digicam because they're not enough to drive a consumer into a difference price point. Now it's about the solid state "film" inside the bodies and how quickly they can store our images.

This PK rumor thread will be repeated every two years, and there will be similar PMA threads, and we'll continue to buy new cameras, and one day, we'll have just as many old digicams sitting around in boxes and have no qualms about handing that RebelXT to our 5 year old grandson because it was only an old 8MP body. But he won't be allowed to touch our 1.1Gigapixel 32bit DR iso256000 30FPS wonder-beast of a camera! And on it goes this thing of ours... Thank goodness the automotive industry hasn't been taking notes from the digicam world!

A wise pro photographer I know from another site had this observation about the deluge of rumors and pontification.

Photographers go through many phases:

1. Dumb. Don't know anything, but happy.

2. Equipment freaks. Don't know anything, but are not happy.

3. Turn the metal trash can into art phase. Think that with good technique, their "artistic eye" and all that expensive equipment that they can turn trash into art.

4. Photographers. Have all the equipment they will ever need, disposed of the rest. Interested in good photography and discussions of it.

The majority of people in forums (from my experience) fall into the #1, #2, and #3 phases. Sometime after they reach #4, they get disenchanted with all the

I'm a #3, but every time I get a paycheck I revert to #2. But I snobbishly talk like a #4 as if I know what that's like.

You think not! Hybred tech has been around for at least 50 years. The large earthmovers in the mining industry have used it for 300 ton earthmovers. Large diesel generators driving DC traction motors in each wheel.
