If Canon won't make a successor to 1D2N matching Nikon D2 pricing, then they will deliberately leave a unique niche for Nikon D2 cameras. It would then make "perfect" sense to leave another niche for Nikon D200.

OTOH, I guess it is "only" a minority of camera buyers who purchase D200 or D2 as their first (D)SLR, but the majority of them first commit themselves to a brand by buying a low end camera and a few matching lenses. Thus Canon might not see it compulsory to directly compete with Nikon high end DSLRs.

They do need a camera in the 1700 rang, though. The 30D is too little for many but the 5D is too much or they do not want FF

A logical conclusion then would be a sealed 1.6x crop camera, if we buy the "no APS-H" message of Canon's management.

Their technical people are giving another message in the FF white paper, where they point out the major cost benefit of APS-H sensor vs. FF sensor.

Of course, an APS-C sensor is even cheaper, and you don't need more than that to compete specs-wise with D200.
