It looks like there might be a 480ex coming (and yes I know it says 430ex farther down the page, but it's still funny).

Given that it says 480 in only one place, and 430 in lots of places, together with the fact that it's free shipping within 24 hours, I think we can put this one down to a typo. Apple have done this before with the 1Ds2......

Yeah I know it's just a typo, but I thought it was kind of funny...

SO things have been really quiet on the canon DSLR front. Does that mean it is unlikely for anything new except the 400D?

No, I think it just means that after 180 pages everyone has talked through every rumor that is currently out there and there hasn't been any new buzz. It's extremely unlikely (imho) that Canon won't announce anything else for Photokina.

Waaait a second.... whatever I do with those six zeros, guess what I get out of it?
ZERO!

I know it's hard to believe, but I've done every thinkable mathematical operation and that's all I could get out of it! Crazy don't you think?!

OK now, for that amount, where do I sign??!!

Canon and Nikon need to pay attention to this on the consumer end: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/pentaxk10d/

That REALLY is a nice camera. Not suitable for serious use thanks to slow speed (3fps 1/180sec flash sync) and only up to ISO1600, but it has some great features for that pricepoint. Spot metering, RAW and DNG support, dedicated metering mode switch, weather sealing, decent vertical grip, 11 point AF (9 cross type), shake reduction in the body, 10Mpx, dedicated RAW button to switch file type on the fly, IR remote, decent glass pentaprism, etc.

I wonder if the images will live up to it's features, if they do The XTi is going to have real problems.

This is what we want - all the big SLR players making cameras which really compete for market share.

Just image Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, FujiFilm and the rest with comparable equipment. Oh, and Sony

The future's bright, the future's, erm black!

It may very well be a nice camera, but there isn't the breadth and depth to compete seriously with canon. That's their "high-end" digital camera body, and their lens lineup just isn't going to compete with the L's.

Agree. Most real world XTi buyers could care less about "L" lenses (by that I mean the 99.8% of XTi buyers who've never heard of FM forums).

I guess you missed the part where I specifically said "...on the consumer end" and "Not suitable for serious use". But to clarify, I am VERY well aware of the market segment that this would appeal to. Regardless of whether or not this is the Pentax high end or not, for $899 it has a lot of features that are much better than the Rebel XTi.

It's not like I compared it to a 1D, so relax.

Regarding the new Pentax camera, someone wrote: "That REALLY is a nice camera. 3 fps may be a limiting factor for some people (or, should I say that some people may think that 3fps will be a limiting factor... ;-), but that is fast enough for many kinds of serious photography.

I didn't see a price at the referenced link, but that is quite a list of features - and parts of it correspond to requests/wishes I've seen in these Canon discussions: weather sealing, etc. If Pentax produces the lenses that most people actually need, and with the quality that they are known for, this could be a worthy competitor to offerings from Nikon and Canon (e.g. 30D). I'm dialed in to Canon at this point myself, but it will only be a good thing if Pentax (and others!) can create some additional competition in the dslr market.

I should have mentioned 3 FPS and a small write buffer. If you shoot sports this would definitely be a limiting factor. For the snapshooter, then I agree 3 FPS is no biggie.

IMHO, spot metering, a very nice 11pt AF system, dedicated buttons or switches for certain functions, weather sealing and in-body shake reduction make this a VERY solid choice for many photographers. It's also worth noting that, as with Nikon, older Pentax manual lenses are compatible with the new bodies making for a wide range of lenses available.

This really makes "picture styles as an upgrade" seem pathetic. And for the consumer segment, that is a very important point.

I can't remember what site I saw listing it for $899, but here is is for $919 at B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=459620&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

OK, I am not upset or excited. I know you were referring to the XTi. I didn't put a smiley on the end or anything, just because that isn't my style. Yes it will sell in the "consumer" space you mentioned, but the reviewer seemed to think it competed with the 30D and D80. I just don't see that seriously happening. It will contend with the XTi, because it does have some nice features. It could even hurt 30D sales at consumer outlets like circuit city and best buy.

I would personally prefer canon concentrate on the mythical 40D or 3D rather than chase Sony and Pentax at consumer outlets. I am smart enough to know that Canon needs that market, which is why I am not exactly bowled over by the news. I would be very excited if there was more real competition in the mid to high end, because I think that they are going to sacrifice SOME RESEARCH MONEYthat region to be more competetive on the lower consumer end. I will be not be surprised, but significantly disappointed if they don't announce something more exciting than the XTi this year.

If this new Pentax uses the same 11-point AF system of the K100, it isn't going to be very fast at AF. Many of the features look promising, though, like the spot metering & weather sealing (assuming it is well-made). I don't think that utilizing different button functions is a critical issue. The IS may or may not be, depending on it's effectiveness compared to lens-based systems. I doubt that it will be able to correct adequately for very long focal lengths, but it should be good in the medium-long range.

In the end, it all relates to image quality. If it is competent, as the 400D will be, then it will sell.

Side issue - if I see this Mac vs. PC commercial one more time, I'm going to throw the television out the window!

I'm with you on that!!!!! My only experience with Apple is my daughter's IPOD, and the jerks we dealt with were much worse than Dell ever has been to me. Her 2 week old IPOD nano kept locking up, so my wife took it back to the store. They refused to look at it or help her in any way, they insisted she had to make an appointment with a tech (in Apple parlance they are known as "apple geniuses") to take a look at it - and promptly all but threw her out of the store. The appointments they give out are only 10 minutes long, and if that wasn't enough time my wife would have to make another appointment and come back. What kind of crap is that? The problem turned out to be a well known firmware bug! I refuse to buy any more of their gadgets, no matter how "cool" they are.

OK, sorry, I just had to rant about something. Canon, announce something soon!!!!!
