I'm sure somebody has already brought up this concern.....but I haven't seen it in the 10+ last pages of this thread

considering the general rebel market (soccer mom, beginner/intermediate) why would they feel a need to up the megapixels already considering the filesize that can yield. I now have 5 hard drives either internal or external hooked up to my computer because of all of my photo storage. I doubt the rebel customer wants/needs a filesize larger than what the rebelxt can produce.

before I get flamed: yes, the rebel xt can take amazing pictures and it's not only novices/soccer moms using them....many good photographers use them too. I just haven't seen a whole lot of soccer moms with 5D's or 1D's

It's a case of beat (or equal) the Jones' - Nikon & Sony have 10mp, therefore so must Canon

I haven't read any of these rumor threads at all, but I feel left out...seeing the "new 70-200 lens" thread. I didn't realize they were releasing one. I'm all giddy inside now. Christmas list is officially made and done. That's all I want...and I don't know anything else about it.

Something just doesn’t seem right. Why would Canon put a 10MP sensor on a consumer body first? Isn’t it prosumer bodies where you make those kinds of improvements?

Actually no, i's not. When canon introduced the eye control focus in their film cameras, it was added to the lower cameras first (Elan7 i think). Then they get all the feedback, tweak and fix, and then add the improved version to the high end cameras.

So it makes sense to add a bit of new tech to a lower/mid range camera, test it, then put it in high end. Otherwise they get all sorts of complaints from people who've spent megabucks on the new toy that it doesn't work properly.

Quotes from the artical from: http://www.dcresource.com/

"LCD info display has gone away; shooting info now shown on LCD; when you put your eye to the viewfinder, the screen goes dark automatically"

Kind of like the KM 5D/7D, Not that great when shooting in dark conditions, or at night as it would affect your night vision every time you took your eye away from the viewfinder.

"Users can also create a "dust map" (Canon calls it Dust Delete Data) for dust that just won't go away; this information is saved in metadata, and the bundled Digital Photography Professional 2.2 software can remove it from your photos"

I wonder if we can use this method via a firmware/software update with our existing cameras? But I doubt Canon would release any new firmware for the discontinued models.

Kewl !!!

By the time I semi-retire my crop cam, the price of the 50mm 1.2 should be low enough that it could possibly squeeze into the budget, and consequently into the bag...

However, I am actually more than happy with my 50mm 1.4; though it does benefit, like all lenses, by a little stopping down. I believe I got a very nice copy; my AF is fast and quite accurate and the lens has just performed beautifully. I get more than good results with it wide open - - I know hard for some to believe.

Guess it shows that with L quality you get QA consitency as well, though it makes sense to me that that should be a top priority of all their lenses. Ahh, in an ideal world where you don't have the competition in a corner, and have the consumer market cornered as well...

There again I did not "bite" on the 85mm 1.2L II either; just could not fathom spending that kind of hard earned loot on the gernade. Goes to show, hopefully, that the L infection has not manifested itself too far along - yet !!! And, my 85mm 1.8 non-L is doing the job quite admirably to date, and I have no anticipation, maybe more importantly no desire to switch.

Maybe after trying the new 50L I will feel the same; the problem is with months of anticipation to work on my psyche, it just may one day appear...

Good thing that I already have the non-L to stave me off for a while, hopefully!

Looking forward to seeing some shots and reviews; who knows, I may have to rent one !!!

Best wishes, Gary

I cannot believe the one LCD setup on the 400D. what about night photography? long exposures? YUCK!

at least now I know I won't have to wait for the 400D to become available to buy my girlfriend a camera....now I can get a rebelXT and get probably a better camera.

screw piezo-electric dust cleaning....I've got a rocket blower that can't/won't malfunction or break.

The www.dcresource.com article referenced above states that the new 70-200 f/4 IS will be $1,250. The new 50 f/1.2 will be $1,600. I don't know where they got those numbers.

The 70-200 f/4 IS price is especially DISAPPOINTING to me. I paid something like $570 for my 70-200 f/4 ... it is really hard to believe that adding IS to the lens added almost $700 to the price.

I heard from a friend that Canon's patent protection on the IS system is expiring soon. THANKFULLY!!!! Perhaps we will see some really great IS lens from the third party lens companies. Perhaps after the patent expires, Canon will add IS to the bodies and we will end up switching IS off on all of our IS lenses.

I was hoping for a new 100-400mm lens. The 50mm is nice, but I don't need it. Maybe something at Photokina, or next year.

Hooray! We're at page 100

Well lot of links popping up now. Find that press release interesting. Seems to confirm the lenses.
Here is a the japanese Canon site with all the stuff about the 400D. Unfortunately only in japanese And it's called 'Kiss Digital X'. I guess that explains the X-banner. There is also a link to the 'Integrated Cleaning System' on that website.

Countdown @ 03 hr 03 min 03 sec ...

OK the 400D, 50/1.2 and 70-200/4 L IS ( a little expensive but very tempting ) are confirmed. We need some new rumours now. The 1Ds III and 200/1.8 IS rumours are still out there, anything else ?

That's for sure. Was the 400D supposed to be the "Legend" Canon hinted about? Looks like it's time to go back to sleep and dream about the 2008 Photokina.

PHOTOKINA isn't starting until September 26, 2006. A lot can happen in a month. The new legend could be the 50/1.2

Don't count on that! 1-Series / FF models have been presented at the shows themselves and rumours came only days maybe a couple of weeks beforehand. So with the 1Ds2 (Photokina '04), the 1D2 (PMA '04) and the 5D (PMA '05).

Thus you better keep an eye on upcoming rumours, now even more
