I have always thought being an optical engineer would be a cool job.

The bigger size, better build, and easier controls alone would make me buy a 30d over a 400d anyday.

Canon will use a NEW 1Ds to spearhead its Digital Camera division into the future and will do so at Photokina 2006, just as it has in the past 2 years. It will basically have the same pixel density as a 30d and thus be around 21MP. Just as in the past the 1Ds wont be the model with a sensor that has the highest pixel density offered by Canon, the New Digital Rebel will. ....10h1m23s....

I see two possibilities:

1. 30D may be the last camera in this line. They may either finally introduce the 3D or push the 5D into the same price bracket as Nikon D200.
2. More likely they’ll just cripple the 400D in firmware (like no RAW). There is not much they have to cripple for the 30D to continue selling (better build, controls, ISO boost to 3200, bigger size, higher flash sync speed just to name the few)

It still seems possible to me that Canon will put a APS-H sized sensor into a 40D - that could comfortably have 12MP, or even more if they went to the same density as the 400D, and the actual sensor would run at around 3-4 times the cost of the APS-C - perhaps not out of the question, and a lot more economical than FF.

Well too bad they already leaked a 10 frame buffer with raw. That's one more than my 1Ds2, of course, but I still won't switch

Personally, I'd like an APS-H camera, but I think that Canon has made a substantial commitment to the APS-C with several respectable lenses. At least substantial enough to continue to offer midrange/pro cameras like the 30D in that sensor size.

I don't think that they developed the 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens solely to be used on the Rebel/400D line. At least I don't think that they had that in mind. There are lots of pros shooting 20D and 30D cameras.

As stated above I know many many pros that shoot 20/30D's and really love them... Thought I would echo that...

Okay, I guess I can tell you now

Canon goes medium format digital, 60MP, takes Canon's new Zeiss/Canon line of lenses, all IS, all 2.8, all more ruinously expensive than an antique car addiction

I wonder if the new 1DIII/X/Whatever may be priced super-competatively (say $5000 or less), and all the speculation we've seen about Canon introducing a 'low cost alternative' to the iST and D50 types might actually be the 400D or even the XTi (if those pics are real too).

If Canon ever introduced a 10mp 400D at $500 or less, then moved the 30D series down into the $900-$1100 range, and the 5D into the $2000 range... they could almost guarentee heading off Sony.

They may not make money on these bodies - but they still would on their lenses, and I seem to remember that Japanese corporations sometimes sell products at or below cost for a while in order to win market share (not so tied to Quarterly profits, I have read).. so I wonder.

My question exactly

I for one would be very disappointed if all Canon offered were the 400D and the 5D (below 1 series.) The build quality of the Rebel line is lacking and the ergonomics are severely lacking. I would also miss the Quick Command dial. And, I am not looking for FF. I like the 1.6x crop. Also, I seriously doubt that Canon would invest everything that they have into EF-S lenses for only the 400D. My 2 cents.

I believe that the 400D is the Rebel XTi. The US versions always seem to get the Rebel name. Can't see the 400 at $500 or below, but I can see $600-700 for the body.

The Japanese corporations are apparently much better at it than American corporations. Witness Ford and GM.

More seriously, the body may well be the "loss leader" at least at the entry level, with profits coming from lenses and accessories.

I had a chat last weekend with a salesman at B&H Photo. He told me a photographer he knows showed him a photo of a EOS 3D that he had somehow tested or used for a period of time. Said it was 22mp and would be announced at Photokina along with a couple of lenses. Price would be in the $6k range. We'll see if he knows what he's talking about.

Note the price listed for the 10D (my first digital SLR) is wrong. The PDF file lists it for $2,000.00 when it actually went for $1500.00 (OK, $1499.00). Perhaps the prices reflected in the list are MSRP so I may be nit picking but one has to look at these projections with a grain (or perhaps a large block) of salt.

Wishful thinking! No way that canon goes into a price war. They have the best technology, the best system, and the lion's share of the high end market. Canon wants to be viewed as the premier brand, not the discount brand. They have absolutely no reason to be cheaper than pentax or olympus, and don't need to be cheaper than the comparative nikon/sony.

And BTW, most of those low-end price conscious buyers will get the 18-55, 50/1.8, and third party 75-300's.
