This is your very first post on FM ever! Why should we believe you? Are you just entertaining yourself? Why did you choose to join FM, and why did you choose to share this "information" with a bunch of what are strangers to you?

haha! You make me feel like the guy walks in on a party he wasn't invited to, yells out "free beer over the road" then disappears.

"Strangers!" What a redundant concept that is on the internet.

Yep, my first post to FM. And what a warm welcome too! I've been lurking these threads a bit, and decided to join in. In particular, I thought I'd bring some tidbits of information I have into this thread. Why should you believe me?. Well, since I am going off rumours like everyone else, maybe you shouldn't. But then again, my rumours are internal to Canon, yours probably aren't. I haven't held the new cameras, I can only report what I hear coming from consumer imaging (which isn't much - they are a tight lipped bunch)

So, despite the spanish inquistion from mr JRM, "Why are you here? What do you want? I don't know your face! We don' like strangers roun' here, pilgrim." (was that JRM warfare I wonder?) I expect you'll hear bit more from me.

Well there were some fairly believeable rumors about a 35D beofre the 30D was released. Wasn't there some picture of a manual or something. And of a 35D itself. This would fit in with a new rebel launch.... maybe.

Fair enough, I was harsh, I apologize. But only for tone, not content. You post some information without any basis for anyone to believe you. No problem with that, we can have fun here! Lots of people are posting speculations. (So, again, I was too harsh.) But, you seem to actually be serious, you have access "internal to Canon". You actually know something!

Why did you think you would "bring some tidbits"? Why not bring those tidbits to a group that you know, where you have been posting? Why bring these tidbits to a forum in which you are a stranger? These are things I consider when I wonder whether what you have to say on a topic of interest to me might be valuable.

I'm not challenging your behavior, we can all do what we want. Welcome, stranger! Apparently a well-connected stranger! I am challenging the believability of your information. I am not saying don't come here, I am saying the timing of your post affects whether I find it believable. I see nothing here worth putting stock in. But welcome, perhaps over time you will establish a reputation and the next time I see a claim of yours, I will consider it in a more positive light.

Welcome to FM!

So the 1.3x crop would imply a new 35D model that won't accept EF-S lenses because the image circle wouldn't be large enough to cover a 1.3x sensor. That seems like an odd departure from the direction Canon has gone with the lower end models. I like the 1.3x crop! But I can’t understand why Canon would abandon EF-S on this tier of their market.

Thanks for the info!

Not to be harsh, but I find it amusing when I read things like "Canon needs to do this..." or "Canon is falling behind because of this...". Canon is doing quite well, and has dozens of MBA types and hundreds of professional photographers keeping them very informed about the current situations.

Canon is not perferct of course, but given technology and business realities, I'm going to give them very high scores even if they only roll out a new 350D or a new EF-S lens geared only for the masses.

During the World Cup did you see all the white lenses on the sidelines? When is the last time Canon introduced a new white lens?

and if my sources are misinformed I'll be the first post a picture of my lovely mug with egg all over it.

As to why post in here? Well, with over 42,000 hits on this thread, I got the idea someone in here may be interested.

Hey you never know. I don't have anything but speculation. I have a contact who knows everything - but he's on leave and doesn't tell me new stuff anymore (wonder why. ).

It hasn't been that long since the 85/1.2L II, but that was an update and not a new lens (correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the optics were unchanged). I can't come up with the last time there was a fully new L lens! Interesting...

70-300 DO? 400/4 DO? All the IS upgrades to the long teles? Hmm...

You know, when I heard this yesterday I thought the same thing re: 1.3x crop. I'm doubting we would abandon EF-S lenses - it makes no sense at all. So, anyway I'm waiting to hear back about this 35D information. We'll see.

Let me start this rumour. It's grand time that Canon release a 200m f/1.8 Mark II. What do you think?

Great -- well let me be the first to carry over the fun (and I think plausible) rumor set that has been much discussed in one of those threads:

1] a merged 1D, 18.5 mp, 5 fps - 10 mp 8.5 fps digic 3. looks like current 1D

2] a 5D update or camera looking like a 5D, 6 fps, improved autofocus, digic 3. same sensor as 5D.

3] 100-400 4L - improved IS

4] 35 1.8

5] 400 5.6 IS

The 35 1.8 looks interesting, after about eighteen years with the 35/2, I'd say they got their mileage out of that one. I wonder if Canon would be silly enough to make it an EFS. I hope not.

Yea, we're more likely to see a 24x24 square sensor than a 1.3 crop on the APS-C cameras.

IMO, APS-C is here to stay. We may see a high end APS-C sensor camera with 45 AF points and weather sealing that will be more expensive than a new low-end FF camera (but probably not in the next year or two).

We may see a low end (3000D) DSLR to convert P&S shooters to DSLRs. DSLRs are gaining in popularity and becoming a status item. And cellphone cameras are starting to hit multi-megapixel resolution. Canon just has to "make the first hit free" (that is, sell a cheap DSLR and lens) so they can start lens fever that leads to L fever... The beauty of this scheme is lock-in -- when the consumer buys a replacement P&S, they can buy any brand. When they buy a DSLR, they then buy a couple of lenses and an external flash, so the next DSLR body has to be from the same company.

I wish Canon would make an 8MP FF. 8MP would have photosites 50% larger than the 5D, and should have an extra half-stop or so of ISO performance. With sensor and DIGIC improvements they may be able to squeak and extra two stops of ISO. So rather than adding IS to the body to get 2 or 3 extra stops, I'd rather have them add 2 or 3 extra stops of improved sensor performance. That way, the existing IS lenses would still add an extra couple of stops.

There was some story floating around from a guy who purported to have inside knowledge and advised someonee to wait before buying a 30D, I asked why and eventually elicited that there was a replacement/slightly higher level suppliment to the 30D to be announced, which he said was 'a bit bigger' than the 30D, and more rez than anything at this level.
'A bit bigger' only made sense to me if it was a 1.3, and Canon have recently said that they would 'like' to continue the 1.3 - since they are the ones making it, it seems likely that their wish will be fulfilled.
I didn't press harder for more precise info as he said he was under NDA - but if this turns out to be true I will watch his posts a bit more carefully in future!
Regards,
DaveMart

Fotojux,

Sorry you had a tough reaction to your first post, and the tone was too strong. But, I can see why he was skeptical. For one, there are tons of fairly well known guys who post "inside info" that turns out to be bunk. For another, there are those who believe that canon employees regularly seed forums like this to see if they can sniff out NDA violators. I am not one of them, but do believe that 99.9% of the rumors are completely unfounded and based on misheard heresay. You may have good info, but without anything in the way of explanation as to why you believe the info is good, you shouldn't really expect any one to believe you.

I was also told that Canon purchased the lithography and related chip production hardware from Kyocera / Contax with the intention of producing medium format (or at least larger than full frame) sensors for themselves after Contax gave up on the idea. I haven’t verified this purchase. It would be interesting if it were true. Can anyone confirm this? It would probably show up on their financial statements but I haven’t read them for a couple of years.

Hi Timbop -

You're right of course - and the reaction wasn't too tough - in fact I agree with you, there is every reason to be skeptical. As I say though - all I have, as much as anyone is rumours - albeit rumours from a pretty good source. Like everyone else, I've got to wait for an official announcement before I know anything concrete. All I know 100% for sure is that a new model(s) is coming - and we staff were baited with a line like "revolutionary new EOS cameras which will be world beaters.." Since I work in photocopier side of Canon, all I get is whispers and dangling carrots - no solid details.

Anyway, we'll all know soon enough!
