p.6 #2 · Fujifilm X-E5 and XF23mm f/2.8 Preorders started
I went to the Fuji exhibition today
X-E5 handles much like the X-E4, just with all the slight improvements and while feeling a little more premium. I think the shutter sounds quite nice. Though, I half wondered whether there was a fake sound being played at the same time or not.
The front lever implementation is probably the nicest thing about this camera that the others in the line don't have. One way to cycle through crop ratios as frame lines, with the option of displaying a centre crop, the other way allows you to change from seeing the default aov (able to see outside of frame lines or make black) and zooming into the crop to fill the evf. Cycling through is very fast, and the vintage info in the evf is a nice touch.
The fact that the dials can be pushed made me wonder what I would set them to, and if that amount of customisation is needed. The demo model was set up to change the wide autofocus box width, and you could very quickly spin to make/extend a vertical column or horizontal bar to fit your situation.
I still have the Voigtlander 18mm for x-mount, and wondered about this new body. But at least for me, all of the 2.36 0.62x evfs are not suitable for even casual manual focusing. These bodies lend themselves to autofocus. Previewing an image is fine enough, and punching in to check focus it is sharp.. but checking focus during composition is too fatiguing, and I'm reminded why I previously sold my X-E4 and bought an X-H2. The evf of the X-T5 (and ZF) is the minimum I can use for any manual focus, but side by side to an X-H2(s), I would sooner go back to the larger body for the better experience.
X-Half is cute. I had a look through the ovf and it is not great. My Ricoh GV-3 is infinitely better. So I didn't really play with it. If you have a girlfriend that likes everything of a diminutive size for being cute, and for some reason you need to spend money on her (and she has 2 premium phones already).. it is something This audience might spend more time using the camera as a prop while still using their phones to take pictures.
Gfx100rf was not available to test but I asked to hold one. It is shockingly light for what it is.. I had to check that the battery was in (it was). I guess it's the same as an X-T5 and F2 prime.
X-E5 is being offered here for ~$1500 USD body only and a little over $1720 with the lens. An early bird promotion offers a second battery, charger and 128GB sd card. Seems a little better here but then the local currency VND is not doing so great.
I would be interested if Fuji could offer some option for evf magnification, which I noticed yukosteel is experimenting with

I picked up a used XE-4 last year on a whim and got that 18mm Voigtlander lens for it. At that format and focal length I don’t worry much about focusing and just use zone focus. For longer focal lengths, I have Fuji and Viltrox AF lenses. There aren’t that many combinations left for small systems with lenses that show depth of field for zone focusing. Which is why I pre-ordered the XE-5.

The nice thing about the Voigtlander 18 and 27 is that they offer hardtop infinity as well

18 is too close to 23. A 16 from voigtlander could be welcome to travel in the XE5 16 and 23.

I can see people saying $1700 is a lot, but it's less than half a used Q2. And there are a lot of the $2-2.5k ff cameras on here, a6700 is $1400 and only 26mp. So its not really that hard to justify the cost
The kit lens is probably going to be pretty inexpensive once it gets out there if it isn't already

I’ve got the X-E5 and the XF 23/2.8 lens on pre-order. For me it’s a return to Fuji after being away for a while (still plan to keep shooting full frame with Sony and Canon) and the lower kit price of the lens @ $200 makes it well worth it for me. I plan to use this for street and EDC usage so I’m wondering which one or two other lenses to pair it with and looking for suggestions. I’ve seen the list of suggested lenses for the 40 Mpixel. It looking for more light to carry option. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Keeping it compact, and complimenting the 23mm pancake, you're looking at the 16mm f2.8 and 50mm f2 lenses. Both outlined by Fuji in list of lenses suited for the 40mp sensor.
If you're ok with manual focus, check out the Voigtlander X-mount lenses. They have 18, 23, 27, 35, and 50mm options, with varying optical output and physical sizing. https://www.voigtlaender.de/lenses/x-mount/?lang=en

If the Fuji X-E5 costs the same as the X-T5 where you are, then expect a price increase for the X-T5 once existing stock is sold out. Over here, the X-E5 is selling just slightly cheaper than the X-T50. I was expecting a higher price. It seems that camera gear prices between the EU and the US are starting to align. I’m not surprised you’re not happy about it :-).

I guess the reduced kit price with the XF-23/2.8 adding only $200 to the kit bundle is giving Fuji credit so I’m considering the X-E5 to be priced at $1499 instead of $1699. After all all of the f/2 R WR and the XF-27/2 R WR lenses are $399. I did place a pre- order.

Looking at the video, the IQ differences among these three lenses (when shot at the same apertures) are trivial. They all look like they are producing pretty decent performance.
While the 27mm f/2.8 and the 23mm f/2.8 are both pancake lenses and very close to identical in size, the 18mm f/2 is also regarded by most as being a pancake lens, too.

That is “kind of” the case, especially if you can resell the 23mm f/2.8 from the kit at (or right now, above) retail price. On the other hand, Fujifilm has often (like most manufacturers) bundled bodies and lenses at lower prices this way.

I think the test in the video was very sloppy. In the first series of photos the X100VI shots were made in brighter sunlight than the shots with the X-E5, leading to more contrast and apparent detail in those shots. He kept apologizing for this but that doesn't get around the fact that it is a poor comparison.

And also notwithstanding the fact that you're watching a video compressed to, at best, 8.8 megapixels of resolution (4k) ....

I just checked B&H and the posted price for the X-E5/23/2.8 is $1899! Body only $1699!

To see contrast differences, it needs to be reshot in the same lighting, but the sharpness differences were observable. That said, the new 23/2.8 and older 23/2 show some glow wide open in the corners even in the overcast light. If the X100VI had glow wide open in the corners, it would have been amplified by the direct sun, but I didn't see any. This makes me think the results will be similar once he redoes the test in the same lighting (at his usual pier setting as mentioned).
As for resolving power, the 100VI produces images with a more narrow FOV, which will always give it an advantage. A slight crop after distortion correction is likely, so we never really see the farthest edges from the VI lens, either. Not sure what corrections are being applied to the other two lenses. Could be we get better profiles for the 23/2.8 between now and release.
