Shot with R5ii + 35 1.4 VCM + Nisi 1-5 stop VND @ 4K-U Fine 30fps wide open at f/1.4 ISO 800

Liking this for both, the helpful lens test and Macross / Robotech content.

@n8rv I'm just looking for any excuse to make more footage for a fellow Macross fan...and for @artsupreme I confirmed the AF speed can be brought down to -7. I put up this quick video and for n8rv I moved Hikaru's valkyrie even further back to better demonstrate the AF speed at -7.

If you need slower AF than that, you're going to have to manually do it. And also Marty would like a word with you.

Haha, yeah I think that puts me at a -3 or -4. I will look later but I'm pretty sure that's where I settled. Thanks for doing this. I'm definitley faster than -7.

For those of you shooting both wildlife photos and videos, what "mode" do you have your camera in when you are walking/hiking around looking for wildlife?

For stills only, I have two custom shooting modes, one for birds-in-flight and another for slower moving birds and other slow moving wildlife. When walking around, I keep the camera in BIF mode since those opportunities pass very quickly, while I figure I have more time to switch to the other mode (with a single button press). Now that I'm trying to shoot video as well as photos, I'm setting up a couple custom shooting modes for video as well, one with "high frame rate" for slow motion video and another for "normal" video. So I have four total modes, but it's faster to switch between the two photo modes or the two video modes than to switch between photo and video, and I'm trying to figure out which model to use while walking around.

I guess another related (perhaps more important) question is, how do you decide when to shoot stills and when to shoot video?

Hi vbnut,

I just had a late night peek here in the thread and saw your question. I'll write a response here tomorrow when I have a little more time, but in the meantime it might be helpful for you to read my introductory post at the top of page 2 of this thread. I list and describe the 3 custom video mode I have my R5 set to wildlife videography.

Cheers,
Rudy

Well guys, as I mentioned a few days ago I've decided to finally quit whimping out by sticking to 8-bit, H.264, 4:2:0 recording and give shooting in C-Log3 a serious try. I've been out freezing my buns off in the Canadian winter for the last 2 days shooting log like crazy and trying to learn how to process the files. As a wildlife guy the sky figures prominently in many of my videos so I thought I would begin by shooting sunsets and learning how to preserve the highlights. Here's my first attempt. Critiques are very welcome. Be brutal, I can take it.

By the way, the sunset this evening was not what you'd call spectacular with bright vivid colours, rather it was quite subtle with a wonderful full palette of soft pastel colours - subtle blues, pinks, peach-coloured oranges, etc., with beautiful whisp shapes blending into each other. I gotta tell ya, so far I'm really lovin' this Log thing.
R5, RF50/1.8, 4K30 Fine, C-Log3, hand held, Davinci Resolve 19

Sorry for having only a link, I can't figure out how to post a private video here. Carlo, how do you post your videos without the rest of your youTube channel becoming visible? I want to post my practice videos in my regular channel but I don't want the public seeing them mixed in with my good videos and messing up look of my gallery.

Cheers,
Rudy

The sky looks great. Highlights well preserved. Something about the rest of the scene feels a little overly contrasty and sharp to me, almost like a “clarity” and/or “texture” slider in Lightroom turned all the way up (it’s the first analogy that springs to mind). That would be my only comment. What was your process like?

As for YouTube, you can set your uploaded videos to be “unlisted”. This means they are embeddable with a link but will not show up on your public page. This is how I’ve uploaded my own tests.

Also, the mobile YouTube app only gives you an abbreviated link that will not embed here. In order for videos to embed here, the full video URL needs to be pasted in.

Hi av,

Thanks a lot for the critique and the youtube info, which I just fixed. I'll write out my process tomorrow morning.

Checkout page 2 and 3 for this discussion. You should have 3 modes setup for video, either 24, 60,120 or 30, 60, and 120. Then you just have to switch back and forth between photo and video mode. I try to take 30 second clips to ensure I’m getting enough to trim. I just switch back and forth between modes and shoot both.

Rudy,
The sky looks fine. The landscape is somewhat blah.(That may be an accurate depiction of the scene) Did it take much in post for the sky to look as shown.
I think a lot of your earlier video skies looks just as good or better.
I have seen a lot of folks complain about CLOG 3 on the R5 but never tried it.
And a lot have cheered the CLOG2 on the R5 MKII. Again, I have not tried it yet.
Good luck on your testing.

Can you narrow it down a bit and tell me what sorts of things in particular you wanted to know about my process?

Thanks,

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much for your feedback, I really appreciate it. Since you have seen all of my wildlife videos over the 2+ years since I bought the R5 (70 videos in total), you're in a good position to make a fair comparison. I agree, I never had much of a problem with shooting and editing all different kinds of skies, and being an old sea dog at photography I've always paid very close attention to not blowing out highlights in the sky or elsewhere.

To get the sky in the above example looking like this I intentionally used very little saturation because I didn't want to "create" a spectacular sunset in post by cranking up the colours, which would not have been a good test for C-log3. Instead, I found that a touch of contrast localized to the middle of sky gave the colours the definition and separation I felt they needed.

At present, which is still very early into my journey of discovery into Log shooting, I much prefer shooting and editing in 8-bit, H.264, 4:2:0 rather than log. As long as I'm careful with my exposures everything comes out fairly nicely with 8-bit H.264. However, last Fall I did a comparison between shooting the same Wood Ducks in the same location at the same time of day in the same lighting conditions in 8-bit vs 10-bit, and I felt that the colours in the 10-bit files shot in C-log3 came out noticeably deeper and richer. I decided that in the future, when I was up to the challenge I would give working in C-log3 a real serious try.

Being in this Canon video thread/group has given me just the shove I needed. So I'm going to really try to give this a major go and at the end of it I'll decide whether for me personally, with my existing gear, and doing the kind of wildlife videos that I do, whether shooting in C-log3 is really worth all the extra work and hassle. As I wrote in my introductory post on page 2 above, if I were shooting people where correct skin tones are essential or if I had to deliver high-quality videos to clients on Blue-Ray disks, there's no question that I would be working C-log3, however, for doing my amateur wildlife videos and posting them on youtube I'm not so sure. In the meantime I am having a good time learning new things so it's all good.

Cheers,
Rudy

Hi Rudy,

Mainly what the post production process was like. What software was used, what adjustments were made on it, what LUTs if any, etc.

To the group and Rudy,
Question on 8bit and 10 bit monitors and video.
I have had a 4k Dell monitor that shows 1.07 billion colors, which my research show is 10 bit (maybe), It is a P2721Q. I have had it connected to my 3 1/2-year-old Dell by Display Port(1.2 I think). Likewise, I was never able to get it to say it was displaying anything but 8 bit.

Due to some problems with my older Dell, I got a new Desktop, MicroCenter PowerSpec G909 a month ago. I also got a new Dell monitor, just 2 days ago, a U3223QE. On first hook-up, it was just displaying 8 bit, but with some research and settings in the Nivida GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super control panel I was able to turn on the 10 bit color. I "think" it made a good amount of difference on early looks.

My question is if we are viewing on an 8 bit or lower monitor, does 10 bit files improve our viewing experence. Or, can we even see the difference. Is anyone else using an 10 bit monitor and only getting it to show 8bit color? I always thought it looked pretty good, but maybe I was not seeing the full potential.
And maybe some of us are still using older monitors that even just show 6 bit color??
Discussion appreciated.

Dave
PS: I never knew I was only seeing in 8 bit color on old monitor.

OK Nate, will do. BTW, thanks for using your name, I always like to address the person I'm relating to by their name, but I understand why some folks prefer to use their online handles... either way it's all good.

I'll get back to you this afternoon on your question. Rather than banging off a few quick steps I'd like to take a little time and write out some comprehensive stuff that I hope will be helpful.

Hi Nate,

Just to give you a bit of context: I have been using Davinci Resolve 18 & 19 daily for the last 2 1/2 years. I love doing this kind of stuff so I spend about 20 hours or more a week at it and I've watched a gazillion online tutorials by pros over that time. Before retiring a few years ago my wife and I owned a small digital design business for almost 30 years during which time we did corporate and product videos for 3 years for some of our clients and I used Adobe Premiere Pro during that time. All that is to say that I'm no expert by any means with still so much to learn, but I'm pretty comfortable with the software and practices.

My editing process for C-log3 goes like this. Please keep in mind that I just started edited C-log3 a few days ago, but 99% of the process is the same for editing h.264 8-bit 4:2:0 files.

Because I still have only the free version of DR I am not able to import 10-bit files into DR, so step 1 for me is to transcode all my 10-bit files into ProRes files. I've set up a batch file converter and I go have a coffee while the transcoding is happening. (I'm a little miffed because I was watching for a Black Friday sale on DR and yet somehow missed the notification - bummer).

Setup

1. I import all my ProRes files (40 of them from yesterday's shoot) into DR and now I am able to examine them closely and decide which ones I'll work on. I kept 10 files of the 40 imported.

2. In the Edit page I cut the front end and back end off of each file (the shaky parts) and use the Stabilization tool in the Edit page to stabilize each file... it makes them nicer to watch as I'm working.

3. I go to the Color page and set up a C-log3 node tree template in one video clip and then apply that node tree to all the other files with a single mouse click. Now all my files have the same node tree and I'm ready to go.

4. My node tree has 7 serial nodes in it. They are all blank and are labelled as follows: Exposure, WB, Contrast, Color, Sharpen, ShadHigh, CST (Color Space Transform). The CST node is always the last one in the node tree.

5. I setup my CST node in the Effects menu of the Color page as follows:
Color Space Transformation
- Input Color Space: Canon Cinema Gamut
- Input Gamma: Canon Log 3
- Input Color Space: Rec709
- Output Color Space: Rec709
- Tone Mapping Method: Davinci

Regarding Luts, I haven't had the time yet to experiment using Luts and I thought I would first learn how to do my own Log processing from scratch since this is what I've done since the beginning with DR.

6. Applying the node tree template to the rest of the video files.
- In the Color page with all the clips visible, click and drag to select all the video files except the first one which has the CST node info in it.
- Right-click on the first clip and a pop-up menu will appear. Click on the Apply Grade menu item. This will apply your node tree in node 1 with the completed CST node onto all the other clips.

7. Editing
I select which of the 10 files I want to work on in the Color page and I begin working through the series of nodes in the node tree.

a. I start with Exposure using scopes (Parade and Waveform), some times I use the Lift, Gamma, Gain wheels but often I use the Curves tool.
b. I do a preliminary White Balance (I use 3 different methods including the WB Eyedropper (easy and good), balancing the RGB channels in the Curves tool, and I use the Vectorscope method.
c. Sometimes I jump to the Sharpening node just to see how the image holds up to sharpening (I almost never set the sharpening below 0.45 because of artifacts),
d. Next I'll play with the Contrast and/or the Shadows and Highlights (ShadHigh node).
e. If I need to do some local editing as opposed to global editing I use different approaches which include the Power Windows for masking (free DR doesn't have masking but Power Windows does a great job); I also often use Curve tool's Hue vs Hue, Hue vs Sat, and Hue vs Lum (these are invaluable).
f. Saturation is one of the last things I do, and only sparingly if at all, because the Color management processes done by DR through the CST node does a very good job. I have found that by using Exposure and Contrast on these Rec709 files the colors just come out of hiding. I prefer using the Curves tool pallet for saturation, especially the Hue vs Sat and Hue vs Lum tools, instead of the global Saturation tool or the Color Boost tool.

Anyways, I think I'll stop here because I'm afraid I've already written way too much for what you were actually asking for. Anyways, like I said I love this stuff so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Cheers,
Rudy

This is a test,,,,,

I spend more time than I'd like to admit getting to this point but I got there. I recorded my guitar into a DAW, (Ableton Live) edited, and dropped it into Premiere Pro my video editing program. The pics were the easiest ones to grab and I only used a few in case the whole project shit the bed. 😂 This little exercise was for the audio portion. It'll sound like crap coming from a phone but on my home stereo speakers even I'm satisfied.

The music has absolutely nothing to with the pics it's just what came out of me when I picked up my guitar.

To me it sounded somewhat similar to Chris Isaak's "Baby did a bad bad thing" riff but in a higher key. Regardless, nice playing! (as someone who also plays)
