I wonder how much they will give one for an R5 or R6 or R6II? Probably no where near what you could sell it for on FM. But less hassle.

You trading up to an R5II Tony?

Curious how good the supply is going to be on Tuesday. My friend was told by CameraCanada that she is 40-50 on the list. She hasn't heard if she will be getting one in the first release or not. We shall see.

CC invoiced me for mine a couple of days ago.

From what CC told me, trade-in range is $1300-1500 for the R5. That is deducted from your purchase price of the R5 II so there would be some additional savings by paying less tax.

I was also invoiced and paid for mine in full the other day. I pre-ordered within a few hours of the announcement.

Thanks for the info, I was wondering what they'd offer as I have two R5s I will ultimately sell and an R5II on order with them. I placed my order in the first 30 mins and haven't heard anything about invoicing yet.

Has Camera Canada indicated anything about CPS member priority? For past releases, depending on the product, CPS members have been prioritized. From my understanding Canon Canada confirmed with shops who on each preorder waitlist would receive what and when.

I was told that if there is not enough inventory to full fill preorders that CPS members are prioritized. But I did not order through Camera Canada

They told me they were prioritizing CPS members and long-time customers.

I cancelled my order yesterday, so someone else will now get one from the initial batch.

Just got off the phone with B&H. They have 300 cameras coming in to the store on the 20th, and their backorder is 130. I got in an order to pick up in the store on the 20th or the 21st. To confirm, this is not a guaranteed order, but is based on the stocks estimates they are expected to receive and the in-store orders they have on hand.

REITERATING that this is for IN-STORE pickups only. Hopefully, I'll get mine on the 20th or the 21st before I leave for my trip in the 22nd.

If there are is anyone in the NY/NJ area, heads-up that they can call B&H and hopefully land one from the physical store.

My two R5m2 just shipped from B&H. The two additional batteries are "in progress" so there's some movement, too. So close.

I only ordered one and it is due to arrive on 8/20. I'm unclear about whether the NH batteries will be an issue. I did not order any of the P series. I don't care about pre-capture or videos.

Jan is a 20 year plus bird still/video shooter with extensive experience with latest Nikon and Sony. But from what I see he is more a Canon shooter (most likely like me he has lots of canon big whites - why would you change for modest differences) but usually tests newest Sony and Nikon as they arise.

I would summarize as follows:

The video is worth watching just for the birds!

- better than r5 in all respects for still and video bird photography
- as good as any other brand/model for bird photography and better than most
- liked analog switch for video/still but did not like on left side. He normally uses red record button which uses c3 anyway so not a big factor.
- LCD image sharper and better - but same mpx
- video wobble is not a problem anymore
- default hold focus is too sensitive - when turned down it works well. With set up button for centre, button for eye - its great
- tracking your eye was useful sometimes but not tempting for default
- rarely hit buffer. Usually shot CRAW 20fps. But thought the buffer was good.
- rolling shutter was not an issue. Could find if really pushed but not a factor anymore.
- precapture was game changer. Became his default
- better at picking the bird out of branches. Just better than R5 overall.
- No overheating video or stills in hot jungle
- Clog 2 video was great for dark/ low light
- pushed darks areas were not as good as R5 but he suspects that this is because Denoise, raw processors have not yet optimized for R5ii. But were close. [I suspect it could be CRAW push issue and craw processors not ready yet because my looks at dpreview studio scenes was that they were very close]
- if you were primarily a landscape still shooter the upgrade is not persuasive

What time did you order? I ordered at 6:00am EDT on the announcement date. Still no ship notice from BH.

On DPReview people are saying BH has started shipping cameras for delivery tomorrow. Adorama was presumably flooded with questions as they didn't plan on this and so I received this email just now:

"Good News!
Orders for the Canon R5 SKUS CAR5M2 and CAR5M2K will be invoiced and
shipped Tuesday 8/20/24.

You are receving this email because you have an open backorder with
Adorama scheduled to ship.

Our customer service agents are available if you have any additional
questions.

The Adorama Customer Service Team"

FYI the first SKU is the R5 II body only and the second is the kit with 24-105.

One telling thing from Jan's review is he reports only hitting the buffer a few times during his trip where he shot "well over 100,000 images".
This reflects my experiences with the R5 as well and I've never come close to shooting that many images per day. I think people that express concerns over the buffer depth on any modern camera is a bit overblown in real world situations.

His comment about using pre-capture and that it adds 15 frames everytime you hit that shutter is the reason we need to be able to toggle this feature on and off instantly with a single button push. Otherwise I'd rarely use this very important feature.

Think about how many extra images that could add up to in a single outing.
Let's say you're happily clicking away on a perched bird. Every time it turns it's head just right or changes positions you take a short burst. My average short burst is about 4 frames depending on ES or EFC mode. Let's say you do this maybe 10 times while the bird is hanging around.
You'd end up with 40 images to cull through without pre-capture or 190 with pre-capture.
Rinse and repeat this say 20 times during your outing and you'd come home with 800 images or 3,800 images to cull through.
Now imagine that only a couple of those 20 encounters were in a good spot and worthy of trying to get some launch shots (BIF) using pre-capture. All the others were in too thick of cover for instance. Tap a button and your golden. Or fumble around menu diving to turn it on. Oh damn it! The bird is gone.

Canon has got to push out a FW update to make this happen. They've given us individual RAW pre-capture, now they just need one finishing touch to make it perfect.
With that said however, I'd still take it the way it is over being stuck jpeg only.

Excellent review from Jan. Just the review I was waiting for.

Sounds like a great upgrade from the R5 if one is shooting wildlife, sports or humans.

Sounds like the AF for birds is similar to the R6II and R3 and not a big upgrade from them but a good upgrade from the R5 (especially in lower light). The bigger AF upgrades come for people/sports. One nice new feature that is the ability to have some AF modes (all the single and expanded points) not be tracking modes (without having to switch tracking on and off). I found that to be a bit of a downside to the R3 where all modes did tracking which was a change from the original R5.

Seems that the Auto settings for AF are a "no go" so it is good that Canon still left a manual setting with those two sliders that Jan said was sufficient to dial down the hyperactive AF in Auto setting.

Jan mentions he will be putting out a settings video soon as he said the camera was more complicated than usual to get dialled in to how he liked it.

Yeah, having a more customizable pre shooting duration will be more practical. Also an easy way to have a button pogrammed to switch it on or off would be helpful. Judging by those that have it already, this seems to be missing.

Hope future FW will improve it and perhaps will be ready by the time I get my R1.
