Trouble in paradise??

I don't have time to watch the entire video but skipping through it, it didn't sound like and "trouble in paradise" to me from what I saw. In his conclusion the only thing he found negative was the DR. Who actually thought the DR would improve going with a stacked sensor?

He found a 12% improvement over the R5 with buffer clearing which seems great to me considering it's pushing 14bit files now vs 12 bit.

I did watch it all. I think he was looking to get clicks with his title. If my math is correct, the difference in DR is just less than 1/4 stop. The R5 has 6.5 stops at ISO 5117(ES) and the R5 MKII has 6.5 stops at ISO 4392. I really want to meet the photographer who can tell that difference looking at a raw file. I sure can't.My ISO 6400-12,600 are cleaning up well using Lightroom, but I'm sure when DXO gets it in their database it will be even better. I usually enjoy Duade's videos, but think he was stretching it a bit. Many comments on his video take him to task for using the RF200-800 with his pre-capture tests, not the top end lens for that test(I own one and love it!)

ETTR reminds me of the old and terrible 18mpx sensor.

I could care less about his DR issues. DR hasn't bothered me since the 5DIII days. Buffer clearing is fine...CFe-B is super fast to clear a buffer anyways.

The AF issue that both him and Jan are experiencing for birds not flying in the plane of focus was more concerning. I didn't get enough opportunities to test this type of stuff when I had the R5II.

I'll be interested to see what lens Jan was using experiencing the same things. He mentions he has had issues also. Now maybe Jan was using 200-800 also but Jan usually is using RF600/4.

I agree that if this is only a "slow" lens problem then that isn't a big deal (at least to me as I would never own the 200-800 lens)

EDIT: I just went back to the video and for his swallow example he was using adapted 500II with 1.4TC as it says 700mm and f/5.6

The last 3 segments with live recordings off the AF are solid gold for anyone new to the Canon MILCs or anyone needing a refresher. Even R5 to R5II upgraders should watch this as it shows how the AF system has changed since the R5.

I must be confused watching the video's. What is the use in having pre-capture if it cannot AF during pre-capture. Everyone says it is a game changer but , what is the point if it cannot AF ?

The camera can AF during pre-capture. It is the situation where people use pre-capture that is difficult, that is a bird that starts flying. It is the sudden acceleration that the AF can't follow, pre-capture or not. Except maybe cameras with extremely high frame rate and simimarly fast AF calculation cycles. (But even then the first frame(s) after takeoff is likely to be slightly out of focus)

AF does function during pre-capture. The example Duade was showing was pretty extreme with a swallow launching towards the camera. That is tough. Maybe the R1 will handle it better. The more perpendicular the bird is launching the better the camera should do. I do believe other cameras I've used (even without pre-capture) could do a better job than demonstrated in Duade's video but it is always hard to say definitively without shooting that exact same scenario one's self.

He did mention Jan had seen similar issues so I am interested to see what situations Jan found this in. Jan hasn't put out a video for a while as I think he was travelling and shooting so hopefully he will have a video out soon discussing this and other experiences with the R5II.

I haven't shot Canon in many years now but I see similar issues with Sony.

I believe there are 2 challenges for the autofocus here:

Autofocus algorithms can't react instantly when a small bird or animal jumps towards you, it will take a number of autofocus calculations before it can start to track something that accelerates very fast. You can probably shorten that time by setting acceleration tracking setting (or whatever it is called now) to responsive, but that also probably makes it more jumpy in regular situations.

Subject recognition like eye af lagging slightly behind something moving very fast across the frame. If it does the camera is constantly trying to focus on the wrong part of your subject leading to consistently missfocused images.

For example because of what I suspect is reason number 2, shooting jumping squirrels with the A9III: simply disabling animal AF took the keeper rate from very low to very high, from almost 0 to getting like 30 perfectly focused images per jump.

Catch of the day! Belted Kingfisher female with her big one! Obvious how they got the name "kingfisher". Ted Shanks Conservation Area in Pike County, MO earlier this week. R5 MKII 200-800 with 1.4X, a ton of crop.
