One telling thing from Jan's review is he reports only hitting the buffer a few times during his trip where he shot "well over 100,000 images".
This reflects my experiences with the R5 as well and I've never come close to shooting that many images per day. I think people that express concerns over the buffer depth on any modern camera is a bit overblown in real world situations.
His comment about using pre-capture and that it adds 15 frames everytime you hit that shutter is the reason we need to be able to toggle this feature on and off instantly with a single button push. Otherwise I'd rarely use this very important feature.
Think about how many extra images that could add up to in a single outing.
Let's say you're happily clicking away on a perched bird. Every time it turns it's head just right or changes positions you take a short burst. My average short burst is about 4 frames depending on ES or EFC mode. Let's say you do this maybe 10 times while the bird is hanging around.
You'd end up with 40 images to cull through without pre-capture or 190 with pre-capture.
Rinse and repeat this say 20 times during your outing and you'd come home with 800 images or 3,800 images to cull through.
Now imagine that only a couple of those 20 encounters were in a good spot and worthy of trying to get some launch shots (BIF) using pre-capture. All the others were in too thick of cover for instance. Tap a button and your golden. Or fumble around menu diving to turn it on. Oh damn it! The bird is gone.
Canon has got to push out a FW update to make this happen. They've given us individual RAW pre-capture, now they just need one finishing touch to make it perfect.
With that said however, I'd still take it the way it is over being stuck jpeg only. ...Show more →
With my grizzly photography, I love the cubs/older standing up to look me over, but often it happens at the end of cute scenes, where the buffer is close to full and then I am down to 1fps, and it takes 4s to clear buffer. It hard to get them out of the grass and trees. I have been frustrated a few times by full buffer. The precapture will be great but bigger buffer time at 15fps would be greater.

What time did you order? I ordered at 6:00am EDT on the announcement date. Still no ship notice from BH.
You should check the timestamp on the confirmation email, then. It was 3:03am PDT for me, or about 3 minutes post announcement. The confirmation email for the R1 has a timestamp of 3:00

Thanks. Looks like they are processing it now.
I preordered both R1 and R5II together. Time stamp was 6:02 AM, or 3:02 PDT.

Maybe the answer is laying off that shutter or the coffee a little more.
I hear what you're saying though. Things can happen in an instant and usually when we or the camera aren't ready.
This just happened to me yesterday while 4x4ing down a trail. My wife spotted a bear off her side of the truck down the hill. By the time I stopped and grabbed my camera it was moving along quickly. And sure enough, I left the damn camera in single shot mode, ISO 100, and some ridiculously slow shutter speed after just doing some landscapes. Needless to say I was lucky to have gotten at least one useable shot when it stopped to look back at me.

Ah. Going forward, I suggest making separate orders. I've had issues with this before, so I ordered the R5m2, R1, and batteries separately. Takes longer but my experience has been it solves some operational issues in their systems. I did the same with the R5 and 100-500 before.

B&H shipped by R5,mk Ii today and it looks like the battery will ship tomorrow. So now I have a decision to make and wondering if any of you are in the same situation and what your thoughts are. Shoot predominantly wildlife (raptors and mammals ) and rodeos. Do I keep my R5 or my R6 mkii as my second body? what would you do and why? Been having many spirited conversations with myself regarding this next decision

I think r6 will go from 80% use to 5%. It is as better fps and precaptue at than r5 but now same minus 45 mpx. . Sell it. And sell r5. Get the r7. It complements r5 I in reach. Or buy the r8 lighter 40 fps - at least it provides some benefit vs r5 I I

My copy arrived today. Flash photography with the electronic shutter is a delight. High frame rate, can use the focus bracketing and/or in camera stacking. I like it better than the OM1 or the R7 / R6II stacking so far. It will take a bit of experimenting. I probably won’t stack a ton but focus bracketing at this speed is going to be great to make sure I get an image with the eye in focus. Just being able to shoot this fast is already worth the upgrade, some of these animals move quick. Eye AF works very well on non-camouflaged insects. I suspect it will be easily fooled by eye-spots on things like beetles and butterflies. AF seems more useful here than on the R5 for handheld in situ bug photography.

I found that an R5 and an R6 II was an annoying combo to own due to the different location of the switches.
I've accidentally hit the photo/video switch on an R6 II quite a bit at this point out of muscle memory.
I'd go R5 II/R6 II to keep the better focus all around and more similar body layouts.

Shipment notification received . . . but then, B&H is now showing the R5ii and all grips IN STOCK! For once, I ordered my camera in the first minute of availability. For once, it didn't really matter. If you want an R5ii, you can have it today!

Haha Murphy's law.
I had read early on that Canon had geared up and made large quantities to launch with to avoid the usual delays since that flu bug thing disrupted supply chains. But then later I started reading it was going to be the usual "Sorry, but due to orders exceeding our expectations you wont get your stuff for another 3 1/2 years" bla bla bla crap.
If stores are well stocked up, then this is very refreshing news!

Adorama lets me add 10 to my cart at a time and checkout.
But my friend hasn't gotten any notification of shipping for hers so I don't think Canada supply is meeting the preorders. She is going to call them today and find out.
Update: she called...was told they got maybe 70 in and there are a bunch of cancellations (more than just @molson I guess) so they are just figuring out if they have one for her or not. When she ordered she was told she was ~45 in line so must have been a bunch of CPS members (or power buyers) jumping the line after her.

What flash are you using? I'm looking for something that can keep up with focus stacking and the electronic shutter.

I don't recall Jan mentioning this in his review so maybe I missed it, but can any of you describe the shooting experience (blackout free? jitter before/after burst?) while shooting BIF compared to the R5?
Is it seamless and easy to track your subject while firing?
