OK, good point as it likely doesn't show up in the OS's file info.

I'm using Photo Mechanic to rename Canon files, sometimes shot at 40fps, with a timestamp taken from EXIF down to the hundredths of a second, so there must be other relatively common apps capable of this, too. Maybe LR, but I have not tried it because I habitually use PM for all these things.

That's interesting. LrC does not report fractions of a second, at least I have not detected a way. An advantage of ExifTool is that you can make tables to plot as was done in the linked thread. Maybe PM can do the same.

Does anyone know what the crop is for the 8k 60p stabilization? Like how much the crop is in standard stabilization and Enhanced stabilization?

The only thing I can find about that in the manual is “ Recording with Movie digital IS () further crops the image around the center of the screen.” when it talks about DCI vs UHD aspect ratios. I never mentions any hard numbers

Perhaps it is variable depending on how shaky the capture is? In DaVinci Resolve Stabilization cropping varies from video to video and what settings you use.

I have searched the manual, and this thread.

If anyone has the camera, can you verify if you can use an external monitor, and still record internally on the memory card? Also does the camera give a clean HDMI output, without a red record dot in the corner? So unlike the R6II

I have the R5 mark ii as well. I can confirm using an external monitor you can still record internally.

Hi

Thanks for the update. Also does it give a clean HDMI out?

Jeff Cable talks about using pre-capture for the first time at beech volleyball in his latest blog and how it helped him get shots he was missing due to the fast action.

Ok you guys with the big bucks that will test this camera for birding (and you know who you are). We are waiting on pins and needles. Not sure I will move over from my 7D, but would love to try mirrorless one day. If my piggy bank will allow it..

I went from the 60D to the R8, then lucked out with a "well used" R5.

While the R5s AF system is quite good, especially with firmware 1.5+, it's just not quite at the level of the R8 (or R6mkii/R3) at least for what I shoot. The refinements to the AF system with the R3 generation place Canon much closer to Sony's system, which is rather flexible and adaptive.

I would have been content with the R5 getting a stacked sensor and the R3 derived system. The bird eye AF is substantially more confident in the three aforementioned cameras. The R8 doesn't leap to the background nearly as much as the R5 does, and seems to do better at tracking objects moving toward the camera, for instance.

That the R5ii leapfrogged them is potentially exciting.

It'll be interesting to see if any more refinements have been made with regard to bird eye AF/tracking, or if Canon said, "that's pretty good," and changed their focus to sports wholesale.

If you didn't see it, this post in the R5II images thread touches on the R5II's ability to recognize a bird significantly obstructed behind branches. It would suggest improvement over previous models, but of course we'll get a better idea as more receive the camera.

I'm guessing whatever the R5II offers in respect to AF performance improvements over the R3/6II/8 generation will be a 'rising tide lifts all boats' effect across all genres. I don't believe Canon would have prioritized sports in the R5iI, rather probably focused on improving human subject detection and tracking.

I noticed that Canon Canada's current discounts on these lenses expire a few days before the R5 II ships... so we'll likely be buying the at a higher price, and the tax is applied to the full price with mail-in rebates. Still a good deal, though.

Cliff I finally got an answer from Canon on the promotion regarding the lens rebate. Based on their response you can take advantage of the current sale as long as the lens appears on the same receipt.

The question I posed them was

Preorder #1234567 consists of

1. Canon R5 MKII - Available to customer for pickup the day the embargo ends (Aug 20,21 whichever is the correct day)
2. 100-500L - the lens is in-stock at the store say on August 7.

Can the customer pickup the lens only on August 7 OR does the customer have to wait to pickup the lens with the R5 MKII when the R5MKI is available for pickup (Aug 20,21) to qualify for the $500 cash back?

Canon's Response

"Pre-order purchase any of the following eligible RF L-Series lenses when combined with the pre-order purchase of a new EOS R5 Mark II System Mirrorless Camera (body only) and receive CAD 500 cashback per lens listed below.

We would like to inform you that as long as you can provide us with an receipt (order confirmation), which shows that both products were ordered together, you can apply for the cashback promotion."

Thanks for checking on that. I don't need any of those lenses, as I already have the ones I want, but I'm now leaning towards not buying the R5 II... I guess I have a few more days to decide.

I'll wait until someone credible actually measures the dynamic range before I jump to any conclusions.

I wonder how much they will give one for an R5 or R6 or R6II? Probably no where near what you could sell it for on FM. But less hassle.

You trading up to an R5II Tony?

Curious how good the supply is going to be on Tuesday. My friend was told by CameraCanada that she is 40-50 on the list. She hasn't heard if she will be getting one in the first release or not. We shall see.
