A similarly priced lens (650 EUR), in Europe, at the same dealer, is the Type I Color Skopar 2.8/28mm Aspherical.

Here are some official Japan market lens prices (before tax) as set by Cosina for these 50/2.2 and other comparably priced lenses for reference. However the actual sales prices in Japanese stores are usually cheaper than official prices even at launch and shop prices will go down a bit over time.

50/2.2 VM both Black & Silver: 75K yen
40/2.8 VM as well as LTM: Black: 71K, Silver: 68K
28/2.8 VM & LTM Type I: Black: 81K, Silver: 78K
28/2.8 VM Type II both Black & Silver: 85K
50/3.5 Heliar VM: 65K (this was released in 2016 so it might be priced a bit higher if released today)
35/1.4 Nokton classic II: 75K (same price as the new 50/2.2)
40/1.4 Nokton classic: 50K (this was released in 2004, not sure if official price has remained same since then, actual shop prices used to be around 36K but they went up to ~43K at some point)

Based on these and comparing to U.S. prices of various versions of 28/2.8 and 40/2.8 and 35/1.4 II I'd guess U.S. price to be $649 or $599 at launch.

I'm selling my 75mm f1.9 Ultron that I've been using for 15 months and buying a 50mm f2.2. Ultron's minimum focusing distance of 50cm was very satisfactory, but 75mm had many spatial limitations. Another 50cm minimum focal length lens, the 50mm f1.5 Heliar Classic, was not considered due to its poor optical performance.

I'm not planning to buy the 50/2.2 right away at least as I've preordered the 75/1.5 E-mount version that will also come out in July and from the new VM releases I've been more interested in the 50/3.5. I suppose 50/3.5 might get released already in August so I'll wait to see if it gets announced mid-July and how it is priced before making any decisions on the VMs.

Same here. I don't think I need another 50mm lens! Cosina should design a high performing 21/2.8 and perhaps compact 35/2.8 and 90/2.8 APO-Lanthar lenses.

I agree. Something like the Color-Skopar 35/2.5 begs to be redesigned.
However, instead of a Skopar 50/2.2 or APO 50/3.5 I'm sure people would have liked a high performance 50mm Ultron that isn't as big as the APO Lanthar and better corrected than the Nokton 50/1.4 ASPH II.

I would very much like something to pair with a fast 35mm lens, on the wider size, for street and environmental portrait work. For me, this would be a small 24mm f2. It is a glaring gap in Voigtlander’s range.

Hi Juha,

Do you know where to buy Voigtlander lenses in Tokyo? I was in Osaka a few months ago and all the big camera shops only had display lenses that were not for sale..
Im going to Tokyo in 2 weeks and hoping to pick up on of these 50s
Cheers!

Hi,

The new 50mm VM lenses (50/2.2, 50/3.5) won't be available in shops in 2 weeks as 50/2.2 has been announced to be released sometime in July (specific date not known yet) and 50/3.5 hasn't been officially annonced yet and might be available in shops from sometime in August at the earliest. Most likely the specific release date for 50/2.2 will be from around 2nd week of July at the earliest. I suppose the official release date for it may get announced around end of June (my best guess for announcement date is 28th of June).

Besides that, the best shops for Voigtländer lenses in Tokyo are Map Camera in Shinjuku and Fujiya Camera in Nakano (1 stop by local train from Shinjuku). Both of these shops sell them around 10% cheaper than major chain stores and they also have Tax Free pricing available for tourists and the best availability of Voigtländer lenses overall.

Map Camera on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/c4iJ2iZe9UG3Lv7KA
Fujiya Camera on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Cz3iAFNVcSbwjY7h9

There are also many other stores that have them but I always buy mine from either of these 2 stores and I think they are the best options. Let me know if you need more info

Cheers!

I should get a pre-production CV 50/2.2 very soon, but I won't be able to use it for a full review. However, I will share my initial thoughts on its design and functionality.

At least test it for impact and weather resistance.

I'll be curious to hear your thoughts about how it compares to the CV 50/1.5 Vintage II and the Summicron ... and waiting, of course, to see your future (authorized) full review.

Wow, check out the MFDs on the 50 VMs!

APO f/3.5 – 0.45m(Type I) / 0.35(Type II)
CS f/2.2 – 0.5m

Both of these will be instant order for me. That 50 2.2 will be the perfect pairing with the matching aluminum 28 2.8 CS. Finally a small 50 to compete with the LLL 50 Elcan.

Came here to say this! I love the little 28/2.8. And paired with this little 50, it’ll be a nice compact set.

Just received the Voigtlander 50mm f/2.2 pre-production sample. I won't be posting resolution tests but will share some sample images to give us an idea of its rendering. My initial impression is that I like it more in person than in the pictures. The silver section near the mount is aesthetically pleasing to me. The lens is feather light and super compact for its specifications.

I really like the feeling on the aperture clicks.

Does it have the big tab of the 35/2 Ultron and 35/1.5 Nokton? Or the small tab of the 35/1.4 Nokton?

The focusing tab is skinnier than the one on the 35/2 Ultron but noticeably wider. Compared to the Nokton's tab, it's much wider but has a similar thickness. I no longer have the LLL's Elcan to compare, but the new 50/2.2 has a big focusing tab like that lens, with very smooth rotation.

The black/silver combo kind of reminds me of my Canon S (LTM) lenses, particularly the 35/2:

Very cool!

On the Leica M, it matches the camera's silver mount, creating a nice aesthetic. When I first saw the picture of the updated CV 50/2.2 posted by Cosina, I wasn't really fond of it, but I had a change of heart when I saw it mounted on the camera.

It will likely look even better on a Leica M Black Chrome or the black M11.
