The Leica 50mm f/2 APO is nearly the same length as the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar, being just 2mm longer and 1mm thicker. Both lenses are quite compact, but the Voigtlander is smaller overall and should not obstruct the framelines as much as the Leica at close distances. I don't have experience with the Leica, but the CV 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar, without the hood, offers no blockage when focusing at long distances.

In terms of weight, the Type II silver brass version of the Voigtlander is 250g, while the Leica is 50g heavier and lacks a brass construction. Alternatively, the

price is certainly a big factor but not for me because I have summicron already.

type I is certainly lighter but I can not stand with its odd shape. I am travelling to Japan in about 2 months and expecting to see one at Yodobashi in Osaka. Unless I can be satisfied with type I's aesthetic appearance I don't think I need this addition to my summicron APO.

However I may pick up a 50/2.2 though. I am considering a LLL Elcan and I see this 50/2.2 looks like and behaves like a LLL Elcan. Do you have any chances or plans to compare these two?

I do think the Leica APO is a much nicer design. Typical Leica. If money did not matter I would get it over the CV even if the CV was slightly better. I just prefer Leica’s design and haptics and of course the extra speed.
But the price differential will be about $8K! I’m guessing the new CV will be $999.

By the way, the CV 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar Type II Black Paint weighs just 175 grams, making it significantly lighter than the Leica, if you don’t mind the slower aperture. However, if you are happy with the Leica, I'd say stick with it!

I'm hoping for $899.

Can you persuade me to buy this CV 50/3.5 APO while I have a summicron 50/2 APO?

Probably not, since I would buy the APO Summicron 50 in a heart beat if not for the price!

The APO Summicron is pretty much a perfect lens, even the size and weight is hard to find issue with. Sure the Voigtlander APO 3.5 is as low as 150g vs the 300g of the APO Summicron, but 300g is very reasonable in the grand scheme of things so I doubt that would persuade me if I was in your shoes.

weight: similar
price: summicron is way more expensive but as I said I have one already
closer focus: CV is superior

IQ: you tell me?
see, this is civil. But I don't think you know how to converse like this.

I'm sorry if I ruffled your feathers, but I never disagreed with you. Your question was if you, as an APO-Summicron owner, could be convinced to buy this lens . I listed the known advantages, however slight, and said it wasn't likely. I stand by that answer. I don't think you can be sold on it. Where's the disagreement?

I think around $775-$800. Maybe even less because it is a low volume lens with little user interest. Most don't understand APO. Production and even design would be less difficult, no asph elements, only eight elements (more virtues of a slow lens). But it will be seen as an oddball lens and priced accordingly. It's going to be one for the aficionados.

Take a look at the prices of the Voigtlanders in B&H's listing of their CV lenses:

In Japan the official prices as per Cosina's site are between 95000 and 105000 (excluding tax) for different versions (3 different price points). I think U.S. price would likely be close to $899 at launch but not sure if all versions will be priced the same.

Just realized a big advantage it has over the CV 50 f2 APO.

No shiny chrome ring on the front.

I’m intrigued a bit by that lens, I find most modern rendering lenses boring but that one goes so far in the perfection that it becomes interesting again.
And it’s so pretty, I want one whatever it does(it’s the essence of photography right there).

But what I really wanted to say is that the prices are up on the Voigtlander website, it’s in the 700-750 Euros ballpark. Attractive somewhat.

That is, umm, tempting! But but I am meant to be buying that new Rollei 35mm 2.8 lens. That happens to be attached to the upcoming Rollei 35 AF…

Yeah, that one is on my radar too, and I thought it could wait but I’m not sure that they will produce it for long.

Absolutely. I agree that lenses with advanced correction have a distinct character. This is especially true for Leica SL APO lenses, which, in my opinion, approach perfection. They offer high microcontrast, exceptional resolution, and smooth, modern background rendering with minimal outlining, creating a unique visual quality that I also appreciate.

The Leica and Voigt APO lenses deliver a similar look to what I used to achieve with much larger APO lenses, like those from the SLR Zeiss and Leica SL series.

So, a character in chasing perfection instead of flaws.

What a twist, I can’t even trust my tastes, they shift when the laws of physics push them in another realm.
Yeah, the effects you mentioned pushed that way are intriguing.
I might just try to go APO and see how I like it.
