What brand of CFExpress card? Have you tried a different brand? I would suspect the card over the camera, even though you tried two cards, if they are the same brand. I had a Sandisk (not CFExpress) 300MB/s card lock up my A7Riv. I use Prograde cards now.

I tried Angelbird and Sony Tough G. Both didn’t make a difference. Honestly I think it’s a problem of some soldering on the main board because it seemed the camera would crap out as soon as it got a little warm.

The original buyer should be able to contact the Sony Authorized dealer they purchased the camera from originally for a copy of the receipt. If purchased local to them, they should be able to go to the store for a copy. If purchased online, they should have an email copy of the purchase or, at least, be able to contact that vendor for a duplicate email receipt.

Unfortunately the original buyer isn’t even sure which store he got the camera from. He sells dozens of cameras a year so…

I'm pretty curious what PP will do here. In general, I never provide my receipt to people buying used from me. It seems far from a customary norm in my experience when buying used as well. Sorry you're having all this trouble.

It does sound to me like stories I've heard of people whose cameras were exposed to salty sea mist. In my personal experience, lockups like you describe have always been memory card related. I have a sneaky feeling the memory slots themselves are compromised.

I can't imagine dumping over a grand into a lemon as described. Quite a pickle.

Regarding whether to include the receipt, I actually usually do get the receipt included with most sales because people tend to store them in the box. I agree it is usually not a requirement. I think the main thing that was irking me was that the camera was sold as BRAND NEW, not used. I think that makes a bit of a difference in terms of expectations of whether you’ll get a receipt.

Just to be clear--this camera was purchased from FB, NOT the Buy-Sell Forum here?

Well, here’s the follow up on where things stand.

The seller I bought from on the Buy and Sell forum did not have the receipt. He tried his best but was unable to find it, and it seemed he really tried. It turned out the one I bought was purchased from another Buy and Sell seller who I then contacted who was unable to find the receipt.

I'm not assigning responsibility but, if I read this correctly, you purchased it from someone who had purchased it from someone - who had purchased it from ...? That would make it sold three times after the authorized vendor sold it. I can't see any situation where you would get a "new" receipt for any item transferring ownership three times. As "new" refers to something sold by an authorized vendor. Sony makes some of the best electronics on the planet but I get suspicious when electronics, less than a year old, have been sold numerous times after leaving an Sony vendor.

I'm sorry that doesn't help your current situation it's just an observation.

Yes, I did not know this when I bought it. I only found out while trying to get the receipt.

I don't see any buy-sell feedback on your account that reflects this transaction. How did that come about? Also, what is your feedback about the seller? Did I understand you that the camera was listed as "brand new" but had been purchased from another seller on the forum? Did the other seller (the first seller) list the camera as "brand new"?

If the seller represented as brand new, when it clearly is not since there was at least one previous owner, then you for sure are 100% entitled to file a PayPal claim within 180 days of the purchase. PayPal is very good about protecting buyers in cases such as this. You should be able to get all of your funds back.

EDIT: I should add, you do have good buyer protection from PP as long as you used their regular Goods & Services to buy (which charges fee to seller). If it was Friends & Family, you may be out of luck.

So, the original seller says that it was bought through an authorized Sony retailer and that the sale included the receipt.

The second seller for some reason even with the quick turn didn't include the receipt.

But we know who the original seller is. He represents to know the original "authorized retailer" who he bought it from.

The authorized retailer will absolutely be able to track the serial number to the customer and the receipt. Sony requires them to record this information to enforce the retailers selling rules regarding mail order and territories.

I would absolutely demand that this tracing of the receipt be done, or go through channels to get my money back through the payment processor. You are entitled to do this based on the representations of the seller.

This is why I always pay through PayPal against my American Express Platinum card. AMex will absolute take the money from PayPal is such cases, and PayPal will then take the money from the seller. Double protection.

You are not being unfair by enforcing your rights in this situation. Just do it. You owe it to yourself.

I did not post feedback about the seller and he has not posted feedback about me. I have linked anything because the point of this thread was not to call out a seller, nor to complain about the Buy and Sell board. It’s just spiraled as more questions have been asked.

Yes, the camera was listed as brand new.

No, the original seller did not sell it as brand new.

The person I bought from has sold several A7r Vs on the buy and sell board and he claims he simply made a mistake. He sent me a receipt for a camera that he bought around the same time as the one he sent me, but it was for a different serial. That one he sold to someone else.

No, these are not the transactions in question.

So he sent you the wrong receipt. His "mistake" is preventing you from receiving warranty service. It is now costing you money. He has responsibility there in my opinion.

Well, I know. But also I can only feel so upset because Sonys warranties are non transferable anyway, so it’s not like I’m really entitled to warranty coverage. While I am morally opposed to the poor consumer protections allowed by the US, and the absolute absurdity of not warrantying manufacturer defects simply because a camera changes hands, that is the situation.

I make a good living and while it absolutely sucks what happened, it won’t affect me much, and I am okay eating the cost because it doesn’t sit right with me to try and force someone else to pay.

Jesse,

You have an attitude that is very gentlemanly. I respect that. Let's hope that the repair solves all the issues and you get many years of great photography out of the camera. That will take the sting out.

Actually the Sony warranty does not state that it is non-transferrable. It only states that it has to have been purchased directly from an authorized Sony vendor. "SonyElectronics Inc.(“Sony”) warrants this product against defects in material or workmanship for the time periods and as set forth below when purchased directly from Sony or a Sony Retailer".

It further states that " To obtain warranty service, you must deliver the product, freight prepaid, in either its original packaging
or packaging affording an equal degree of protection to the Sony authorized service facility specified. It is your
responsibility to backup any data, software or other materials you may have stored or preserved on your unit. Itis
likely that such data, software, or other materials will be lost or reformatted during service and Sony will not be
responsible for any such damage or loss. A dated purchase receipt from Sony or a Sony Retailer is required."

Nothing herein states that the bearer of the authorized receipt must be the original buyer. You simply must obtain your receipt or have PayPal intervene on your behalf.

How is buying a "new" body from an FM listing any different than buying a grey market "new" camera?

Don't warranties only apply when they are purchased from authorized reseller?

The continued insinuation by some that a lack of a receipt puts the seller in the wrong is misguided IMO. Buy from an authorized retailer if you wish to receive the full benefits that imparts. If the seller flatly stated that the camera WAS originally purchased from an authorized reseller, AND that a receipt would be included, then you have a case for PP.

Grey market does not carry a U.S. warranty, period. A U.S. camera, purchased from an authorized Sony retailer/vendor with a U.S. warranty is valid (according to their warranty) without mention of "original buyer". Read my post above.
