Actually the Sony warranty does not state that it is non-transferrable. It only states that it has to have been purchased directly from an authorized Sony vendor. "SonyElectronics Inc.(“Sony”) warrants this product against defects in material or workmanship for the time periods and as set forth below when purchased directly from Sony or a Sony Retailer".
It further states that " To obtain warranty service, you must deliver the product, freight prepaid, in either its original packaging
or packaging affording an equal degree of protection to the Sony authorized service facility specified. It is your
responsibility to backup any data, software or other materials you may have stored or preserved on your unit. Itis
likely that such data, software, or other materials will be lost or reformatted during service and Sony will not be
responsible for any such damage or loss. A dated purchase receipt from Sony or a Sony Retailer is required."
Nothing herein states that the bearer of the authorized receipt must be the original buyer. You simply must obtain your receipt or have PayPal intervene on your behalf.
The A7rV warranty doc is pretty clear that the warranty is transferrable. In the warranty doc they state: "original owner and any subsequent end user owner(s) for the time period set forth".

Regarding whether to include the receipt, I actually usually do get the receipt included with most sales because people tend to store them in the box. I agree it is usually not a requirement. I think the main thing that was irking me was that the camera was sold as BRAND NEW, not used. I think that makes a bit of a difference in terms of expectations of whether you’ll get a receipt.
Hard to believe the camera had two previous owners and has not ever been used.

You addressed non of my points. I know what a grey market camera is.

Grey market does not carry a U.S. warranty, period. A U.S. camera, purchased from an authorized Sony retailer/vendor with a U.S. warranty is valid (according to their warranty) without mention of "original buyer". Read my post above.

Sometimes there is a fine line between being a gentleman and being taken advantage of.
Given the facts as you relate them, the second seller knew or should have known that the camera he sold you was not brand-new because he bought it from a prior owner. If it were somehow an honest mistake on his part, it is still his mistake. The price you paid him was for a "brand-new" camera. At a minimum, he owes you a price adjustment.
And the inability to provide a receipt on what he said was a brand-new camera makes for a real loss on your part--the Sony Warranty is transferrable and with a receipt you would be entitled to warranty coverage within the warranty period, even if the camera were not brand new.

Isn't it suspicious that a seller on FM is selling multiple A7rvs ?
Who buys and sells multiple A7rvs ?
Who buys and sells multiple A7rvs as "new" ?
Who buys and sells multiple A7rvs and gets the original invoices mixed up and then is unable to find them ?
I would always insist on the original invoice with a secondhand purchase - the only way to know the item isn't stolen or gray market goods.
p.4 #6 · Sony A7r V Reliability Problems / Lock-Ups
Folks selling on FM as new with receipt are basically selling for a Sony Vender/ retailer which I think is legal. I know I bought one that way actually my A7RV and all was well with new receipt from the actual store.
But if someone says new it should be new and not a used item
Grey market basically never goes through a Sony distribution point in US which carry’s no warranty from a US Sony repair facility. I avoid grey market as the cost savings is typically not worth it without warranty

Unfortunately the original buyer isn’t even sure which store he got the camera from. He sells dozens of cameras a year so…
Just reading this thread now. First thing's first - sorry this happened to you Jesse
Not sure how hard you want to press this but I would ask the original buyer which dealers he bought A7rV's from - it can't be more than a few, right? Then ask him to contact each of those dealers and ask them to either find the invoice based on the S/N, or failing that, provide him copies of invoices for all the A7rV's he purchased in that time frame. He may not even need the dealer's help since most have websites that let you look up orders and download copies of invoices. It doesn't seem like a big ask considering the $1k+ repair bill you've been slapped with.

Apologies for rising this thread from the dead (so to speak), but here's my latest experience I think is important to share to rise awareness of certain amount of Sony A7R V bodies out there affected by the mysterious boot loop issue.
I've had this wonderful camera bought 2nd hand and used extensively for nearly 6 months with no problems in sight until recently. One day (start of April 2024) as I was about to use it away, switched it on as usual, but camera started to act absolutely crazy. It keeps restarting for no apparent reason, basically suffers from the so-called boot loop issue. I'm not able to enter menu at all while in photo mode, because camera reboots very fast, like every second or so and does this indefinitely for about 1 minute until screen goes fully black.
Interestingly enough if camera is switched to video or S&Q mode, it reboots less frequently, every 10 seconds or so. During that time I tried to access menu and perform and initialise full reset, but it doesn't proceed and glitches and throws me back to menu. Also tried to perform firmware update from 2.01 to 2.02, but again camera doesn't go ahead with it and kicks me out back to menu.
Needless to say, I can remain in the menu only when connected via type C delivery port to power bank/external power source and with any lens attached to camera. However the lens isn't recognised by the camera and screen remains dark.
If the camera runs on fully charged genuine Sony battery only, the boot loop happens every second and me unable access the menu. Same behaviour goes if no lens is attached to camera. No matter if it's photo/video/S&Q mode.
One way or another camera is unusable and very likely the circuit board is on it's last feet. I have never dropped the camera, exposed it to water or other nature elements. Always used in airplane mode, so never attempted to use Bluetooth or WiFi. So I'm clueless what could have triggered this behaviour in first place.
And yes I read other users who had similar or identical experience (mostly reddit), I'm aware this needs to go to Sony in order to be fixed. Currently awaiting their response to organise the costly repair. Given the camera is out of warranty, this won't be cheap, for sure.
I suspect there are more cases in regards faulty Sony A7R V units out there, but guess most of them get covered within warranty.
So one again, this post is just to make other users aware of a certain chance their cameras being prone to a hidden vulnerability, which is very likely a result of poor quality control. In which case Sony clearly never admits it ever was their fault😐
If anyone has any idea perhaps try some magic I could perform in the meantime, they're more than welcome🤝

Since this thread was raised from the dead, y’all should know this ended up costing about $1100 and I was annoyed about it but the camera now works perfectly following a main board replacement.

That's a bummer. I've had mine since launch and luckily have never run into this issue. I hope I don't.
Can you do a camera reset? Did you try different memory cards, maybe format them outside of the camera? Also maybe different batteries?
I've tried it all tbh, different memory card types and capacities (both SD and Cf Express type A), no cards inserted, different genuine Sony batteries (and even 3rd party ones) and no bats inserted. Like I mentioned I could enter the menu as far as full reset section, but camera will simply not cooperate and will not let me perform the reset and same goes for an attempt for a firmware update.

That is exactly my trajectory path right now and I'm fully aware at this stage sending it to Sony is the only remedy. I do realise it will be a costly affair, but such is life with Sony when sh@t hits the fan. It's pain to go through this, but it is what it is. I suspect the quote won't be much different from yours, perhaps even higher as I'm based in UK. Life goes on...

Yeah it is quite crappy. The end cost was $1233 (just verified the invoice). If you can get the original receipt you won’t have to pay it, I exhausted pretty much every option and wasn’t able to get it. And they are strict about it even for a camera that wasn’t old enough to be out of warranty.

When I acquired the camera from the original owner, there was no receipt coming with it, which I've clearly been made aware of during the time of buying (needless to say got a very good price negotiated). Now it's coming back to me with vengeance, but I'm thinking it's just a bad luck as the camera didn't exhibit not even a slightest sign of misbehaviour whatsoever for nearly 6 months since I got this A7R V. Just out of the blue, no warnings at all, things started to boot loop. It's a mystery to me, wished I knew if there was something specific I did that triggered this, but guess I'll be left clueless.
Sony will definitely charge me in no mercy/execution style. Should hear from them rather sooner than later, currently waiting for the quote
