Thanks for the tips folks. I will definitely try and see if anything improves it and if I can’t figure it out I will be chasing down the seller (hopefully).

By chance are you using an aftermarket grip on the camera? A couple years ago I was having issues with my A1 that I narrowed down to an aftermarket grip. I also found a number of others having the same issue. Issue have not returned once I switched to an OEM grip.

Not using a grip at all. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Has the camera exposed to rain/water?
On another note, if you have paid by Paypal, I believe you have six months to open a dispute. So if you haven't exposed the camera to rain/water and you have dropped it, it shouldn't be your fault. You are entitled to file a claim with Paypal.

Never been exposed to water. Due to the complete potato that is the camera that was sold, I am possibly going to open a PayPal dispute if the seller cannot provide any receipt and Sony refuses to warranty fix it without.

Mine had the magnify problem, which disappeared with the first firmware update. Other than that, I've had a few random lockups, but I think on average not more than the a7rIV did. The failure to autofocus sounds very much like a poor electrical connection to the lens contacts; I had that occasionally on one of my lenses until I cleaned the contacts, which cleared it up.
Just another data point.

Well, here’s the follow up on where things stand.
The seller I bought from on the Buy and Sell forum did not have the receipt. He tried his best but was unable to find it, and it seemed he really tried. It turned out the one I bought was purchased from another Buy and Sell seller who I then contacted who was unable to find the receipt.
Precision Camera and Sony will not validate the warrantied period based on serial number.
Precision Camera is going to replace the main board, and is billing $546 for parts, $624 for labor, and $63 for shipping. For a grand total of $1,233.
They’re claiming 3-4 hours of labor, which makes the cost of labor between $156-208 depending on how much time it actually takes them.
This is probably the most absurd labor pricing I have ever heard of, and I’m someone that has to get vehicles repaired in freaking California.

So sorry to read about this kind of result from a FB board purchase. We should all learn something from this. If buying an item within the warranty period we should insist on receipts so the warranty remains valid.

No competition for their labor so they can charge whatever they like. The company I worked for before I retired ( 8 years ago ) charged $150/hour with a minimum 4 hours for labor repairing sensors. Customers also had no other place to repair their sensor.

I'm pretty curious what PP will do here. In general, I never provide my receipt to people buying used from me. It seems far from a customary norm in my experience when buying used as well. Sorry you're having all this trouble.
It does sound to me like stories I've heard of people whose cameras were exposed to salty sea mist. In my personal experience, lockups like you describe have always been memory card related. I have a sneaky feeling the memory slots themselves are compromised.
I can't imagine dumping over a grand into a lemon as described. Quite a pickle.

Wow! This is so not cool. If the original owner bought online then he should be able to find a receipt in his email. If not, contact the salesmen at the dealer who handled the sale (via the original purchaser you contacted) as they should be able to reprint the receipt. Send him a gift card for his troubles in helping you get that receipt copy.

Try offering them $250 for the receipt. Make it a polite offer "for their trouble in locating it or if necessary obtaining it from the dealer".

Unfortunately, both the person I bought the camera from and the person he bought the camera from both buy and sell a lot of gear.
I’ve decided not to proceed with a PayPal dispute. I paid the invoice and am going to hope for the best. I’m really shocked at the pricing. But it’s either pay or have a total lemon of a camera. If replacing the entire main board does not fix the issue, I’m not sure what happens then.

If the repair doesn't fix it, then I would expect Precision to make good on their work. I'm sure it comes with some kind of a guarantee. I don't think you would have a problem there. But replacing the motherboard should do it.
I am not really surprised at the price. Don't feel taken advantage of. Parts like a motherboard are always expensive, and the hourly rate is for a highly skilled activity (otherwise we would do these repairs ourselves) and must also cover all the costs associated with the facility's operation (rent, health insurance, secretarial and other staff, phones, social security, utilities, vacations, and sick days, etc.) It's not like the hourly rate goes directly into someone's pocket. The only income the place has is the hourly rate and a percentage of parts. I don't think anyone ever made a financial killing in camera repair.

I'm over here thinking that $150/hr seems cheap, but I'm used to the IT world...we pay more than that regularly for trained people to type on their keyboards. In my brain, actual skilled repair work would be more substantial, but I'm probably just biased.

What brand of CFExpress card? Have you tried a different brand? I would suspect the card over the camera, even though you tried two cards, if they are the same brand. I had a Sandisk (not CFExpress) 300MB/s card lock up my A7Riv. I use Prograde cards now.

The original buyer should be able to contact the Sony Authorized dealer they purchased the camera from originally for a copy of the receipt. If purchased local to them, they should be able to go to the store for a copy. If purchased online, they should have an email copy of the purchase or, at least, be able to contact that vendor for a duplicate email receipt.
