Fairy Martin - a9iii 300 f/2.8 + 1.4TC I experienced some weird hunting on some of my early sequences with this lens with and without the TC and with the FW3.0 update on the A9iii. However in more recent sequences I seem to be back to the rock solid 100% even on an incoming Martin.

I just returned from a birding trip to Sanibel Island, Florida, where I checked out the 300 GM on an a1. I think the lens delivers fantastic results, but ultimately, it's not for me. The weight, maximum aperture, and image quality are outstanding. However, it's a niche lens, and for wildlife photography (mine at least), it's too limiting compared to my 200-600 (which to my eyes gave pretty much the same image quality). I found I naturally gravitated to the 200-600, which told me all I needed to know. I'm glad I only rented . . .

I just ordered the 300 GM and was wondering what size Zemlin hoods you guys are using? I was thinking of going down one size from the stock hood to a 72mm (stock hood is around 96mm).
I'll mostly be shooting wildlife (eagles, owls, large mammals etc). I live in the PNW so perhaps it would be exposed to some drizzle, but that's the only downside that I can think of.

I had the 50mm short hood and it was perfect with the 300mm GM.
I decided to try stacking the TCs using an extension tube.
Not too shabby but you can't focus to infinity and actually can't focus all that far out.
Not something I plan to use. But fun to try.
The EXIF doesn't read the 2nd TC. The EXIF reads f/8 but that is really f/11 as I stopped down one stop to improve IQ.

So in reality these are 840 f/11.
Any better than just cropping from the TC2?

I didn't test that. But with the limitations to focus distance, I wouldn't use this in the field anyways. I'd guess cropping from the 2xTC would be just as good (especially if I shot the stacked TCs wide open at f/8).

The F-35 looks great in the golden hour light! The planes surface almost has an iridescent quality to it. Maybe a side effect of the radar absorbing surface?
