In my opinion there is never a downside to be able to configure your camera your way. Pretty much every function should be easily assignable to every button. Your camera should be able to be set up as if it were custom built for you.
There are always downsides. Nikon has to pay people to make that happen and then they have to provide support for the users that call in crying when they press the shutter button and delete their once in a lifetime photo of Niagara Falls.

As this comes full circle, I just noticed something. And it came from RobCD. It is not the "Delete" button that was moved from its traditional spot. It is that the "Playback" button on the Z8 is separated from the "Delete" button now.
"Delete" button is in its traditional spot (top left of camera back), and the "Playback" button is now in the bottom right corner of the Z8.

You can assign playback to Fn3 to match your D850 setup.
That is exactly what I am thinking about doing. I do not use the lock (key) button anyway. For me it has become a "sometimes nuisance".
Will have to assign it a little later. Going out to actually use the camera this afternoon.
So, "grumpyoldsod" is right...... it *is* possible to assign a "Delete" option to another button. Apparently it does not delete images in the same way but I have tried it and I think I like it better in some situations.

Oh, you meant downsides for Nikon Corporation not users, I wasn't even considering that, nor should I...

Oh, and for those who continue to blindly argue that the Z6/7 (II) lines of cameras poor sell through rate was not having a negative affect on Nikon and its reputation, I suggest you look at the positive metrics Nikon is now getting in market share now that the Z8/9 camera is out. Dramatic improvement in lens sales. People are now once again comfortable investing in the Nikon camera ecosystem. It show up in sales...

It has never even occurred to me to assign a button for deleting images other than the one already programmed to do it, and I am having a hard time understanding why someone would want that. What in the workflow is better about it? So you can delete images with the camera to your eye? It can't be that it is a meaningful shortcut if the camera isn't to the eye, right?
To me function buttons do one of two things. 1. They provide a shortcut that is far easier than My Menu or similar to that, saving multiple steps, or 2. They provide a convenient button that you can reach for with your right hand with your cameras to your eye to change things like AF types, etc. I am having a hard time seeing either applying to the delete button, tbh.

Reviewing and culling images while out in the field during bright sunlight is much easier and better done through the viewfinder.

A friend who also got his Z9 recently pointed out to me since he prefers to do about everything with his RIGHT hand, he set the delete button to the Video red button on the top right. He much prefers that kind of access. I personally don't mind the delete button right where it is. It's an individual choice to be sure.

Neither the EVF nor the rear screen are high resolution enough to adequately review your files in the field to make decisions on critical sharpness. Y’all do you.

I do do me. Me is used to an EVF with a 9.44M-dot OLED panel that has a 0.9x magnification factor and can zoom in for examining focus.. I have found I can easily judge critical sharpness with that.

We are talking about the Z8/Z9, except you.

There are a whole list of reasons why an image might be an obvious candidate for deletion that have absolutely nothing to do with sharpness.
That being said, I have absolutely no idea why I would waste time in the field deleting photos. I am too busy taking them or doing something related to taking them.

As someone with a lifetime of experience making things for other people to use I can assure you that if you give users enough rope to hang themselves then that is what they will do and that is a problem for the users and the company.

Yes, I also find this works well in Playback via the EVF and typical editing after a burst etc, with Lock-image and Zoom on Fn1 and Fn2, respectively. The Z9 and now Z8 have significantly refined using Right-Hand-only custom controls, which some Nikonians find works well with the Lens-Controls especially handholding telephotos. The D6 also improves the customs well for Right-hand brigade. I find one needs access to custom more controls with the MILCs compared even to a D6 : for Handover AF as well as wysiwyg photography.
As memory serves, the Delete and Change-Focus buttons are 2 Nikon has never allowed customizing,
In any case it's hard to imagine how many Z8 and Z9 owners utilize all 26 buttons with the same frequency, let alone with their eye to the EVF, (28 in Z9). In the latter situation, there's no less than 15 controls close to one's fingers shooting Horizontal with the Z9 [14 on Z8], plus shutter release, monitor-mode, Focus-mode, and the pair of scroll wheels....

I have these respective sheets printed out - useful to have on a trip if you are offline. (The Playback menu has its own set of Custom options, also with improved options compared early Nikon ILCs.)
I find it useful to turn ON the Custom Menu f6 Release Button to use dial - easier for scrolling AFModes on the Red button and -/+, ISO buttons etc
A genuine criticism of Nikon's menu system is the Nikon Nanny (a recurring Thom H term) is erratic and mean as to what buttons are not permitted/control button in the Custom Menus. Further, too few buttons can be worked as a Toggle On/Off - to work like Recall Shooting Functions [Hold]....and off course we are still rationed to 1 RSF setup/Shooting Bank.
