Does anyone know a way to assign "delete" (the trash can) to a button on the right side? Probably not but thought I would ask.
It is not possible.
A total of 26 controls are listed but not delete unfortunately. The current Z9 options are similar but FW 4.0 has added a few more options

I had a friend that assigned his Video red button on his Z9 to be his Delete button. So if you go to the Customize menu for photo it should be available to you there on that button.
Thank you for the suggestion. I just went through all of the options in Custom Settings Menu f12. I think there were 50 but not one for "Delete".
But I am not sure I was in the place you suggested ("Customize menu for photo")

Not sure if it is the same on the Z8, but every Nikon I have ever owned, the delete option was press the trash can twice, but they also give you the option of cancelling out of the delete. Maybe that's why they don't have a direct re-assign feature for it.

Go to the menu settings and down to the last heading where you can populate your MY MENU with entries.
Add - Delete from the Review Menu and ensure this is the top menu item
Go to Custom Controls - f2 - and find the button you wish to use then select the role "access top item in MY MENU".
This way Delete will be chosen when you press your selected button.
I have assigned this to my Fn 4 button on the Z9 and Fn 3 button on the Z8.
I am going through the Z8 menu sections, trying to guess where you mean when you wrote
"Go to the menu settings". Specifically, where is "menu settings" ? I think once you clarify that first phrase I will be able to move though the rest of your instructions.

He is saying make delete the first item in your My Menu list. Then assign a button to bring up my menu when pressed. When you do that delete will be the first on the list and you can then start to delete.

After this set of menu instructions I don't expect to hear how bad other systems menus are. That is just plain ridiculous...
Nikon's menu system is easily the worst of any current system I've used. Sony and Olympus used to be even worse, but they both listened to their customers and cleaned up their menu layouts.

Thank you. I agree with you.
Example: My Z8 came with "RECENT SETTINGS" as the last main selection among the major menu headings.
I finally went to the Z8 Reference Guide to discover that to find MY MENU I must go to the last option in RECENT SETTINGS and choose "Choose tab" to change RECENT SETTINGS to MY MENU?
You know what they say about "If all else fails".......

Since there's a dedicated Delete button, I assume Nikon doesn't feel the need to have that be a programmable thing?
And don't feel bad about the menu system.
As someone who uses Sony A1 and Nikon Z bodies daily, I am often confused by the Nikon menu system.

To be fair we first need to know if this is problem Nikon actually should be criticized for not solving. It's definitely not for me but I'd be curious to know if it is for a significant number of Nikon users. The delete button has been in the same place with every Nikon camera I've ever owned and I don't recall seeing anyone complain about it. Flexibility to assign delete to other buttons might be welcome but I think criticizing Nikon for a problem that may not exist is questionable. And there are also downsides to too much freedom with assigning the delete function.

Thank you for your patience and help.

Just got off the phone with Nikon. At first they said there is no way to assign the "Delete" button to a button on the right side of the Z8's back.
Then I asked him if I could read what you wrote. He agreed to listen. We tried it. I chose the Sub-selector button. Yes, it does now allow me to delete images ..... from a group of smaller thumbnails. Nonetheless, it does work. So you are right.
But I am just curious, why you would choose the Fn3 button for your "Delete" button on the Z8? It is right next to the trashcan already.

In my opinion there is never a downside to be able to configure your camera your way. Pretty much every function should be easily assignable to every button. Your camera should be able to be set up as if it were custom built for you.

As this comes full circle, I just noticed something. And it came from RobCD. It is not the "Delete" button that was moved from its traditional spot. It is that the "Playback" button on the Z8 is separated from the "Delete" button now.
"Delete" button is in its traditional spot (top left of camera back), and the "Playback" button is now in the bottom right corner of the Z8.
