That is exactly what I am thinking about doing. I do not use the lock (key) button anyway. For me it has become a "sometimes nuisance".
Will have to assign it a little later. Going out to actually use the camera this afternoon.
Just to clarify Robert, if you assign playback to the Fn3 button you do not lose the use of the protect (key) feature. Once you are reviewing photos you can still use that button to protect the photos. The feature does not go away. I have my Z9 set this way (only its the Fn4 button on the Z9 in the same location) so that I can use the same review button position as my D5 (and previously D850).

Oh, and for those who continue to blindly argue that the Z6/7 (II) lines of cameras poor sell through rate was not having a negative affect on Nikon and its reputation, I suggest you look at the positive metrics Nikon is now getting in market share now that the Z8/9 camera is out. Dramatic improvement in lens sales. People are now once again comfortable investing in the Nikon camera ecosystem. It show up in sales...
So you're saying the Z8 and Z9 are driving sales of the 31 or so lenses with approx $47,000 MSRP and the Z6 and Z7 would have driven more sales of all 3 lenses (approx $2300 MSRP) if only those cameras were more competitive?
You think it's possible that the approx 31 Z lenses could be driving sales of the Z8 and Z9 more so than the 3 Z lenses would have driven sales of the Z6 and Z7?

We are not talking about lenses available on release date. The Z6/7 have been out since 2018, and the Z lens library has steadily grown since then. Yet no matter how many lenses were added, the market share of lenses and bodies didn't grow meaningfully. In fact it shrank meaningfully during that period. This changes suddenly, and positively on the release of the Z8/9. This is not a coincidence.
So, I am saying that before the Z8/9 cameras were released both Nikon mirrorless lens sales and Nikon mirrorless camera sales were documented to be near the bottom of the market share data. Now that Nikon has some fully competitive cameras in the Z line sales data for both lenses and bodies have moved up substantially. This is not coincidence.
Yes body sales do drive lens sales. The number of lenses sold per body is a metric that is closely followed and commented on by manufacturers. These changes in market share for such things are not coincidental. They are very closely related. It is also well known that successful flagship cameras help drive sales across the entire down line of products.
In the end I am absolutely saying that if the Z6/7 bodies had achieved a higher market share, then Nikon lens sales would have seen a corresponding sales boost. Absolutely.
You can see that same sort of jump in market share in camera bodies based on Z8/9. You will note that no other Nikon camera body even made the numbers to be mentioned. Yes, it is reasonable to say that the Z8/9 cameras are driving the recent jump in Nikon lens sales, and bodies. It sure isn't the Z6/7 (II) bodies, and it sure isn't a coincidence.
It is also likely that Nikon's lead with innovative long prime lenses does drive some buyers to choose the Z8/9 camera system. But judging by the numbers of these lenses being produced and sold that is unlikely to be the driving force behind the broader market share gains. Plus, once one has bought into the Z system with the Z8/9 body the multifying downline forces still apply.

I have been beating the piss out of my Z9 for over a year and a half with minimal regrets. Just get it. oliveandgrace wrote:
I need to upgrade this year, and this one might be it! My good old d750 has been so trustworthy though, so switching makes me nervous.
I chose the Z9 for similar reasons. The free extra battery was certainly a perk. But the built in grip was also a draw. I was in no way afraid of the added pound. It adds to the shooting stability.
Shutter (AF-ON of the AF-mode I have chosen to start with - normally C1 or C2), AF-ON (3D-tracking +AF-ON), Fn1 (Dynamic Small +AF-ON), Fn2(Auto Area +AF-ON), FN3 (Z9 -- same as Fn1) -- all AF-ON a selected Af-Mode.
My Fn3 (Z8) and Fn4(Z9) access the top item in My Menu -- which is delete and this allows me to
Movie Record Button -- actuates my shooting Recall Hold Function -- which for my Wildlife Menu Bank (B) that disables Subject Detection; for my General shooting Bank (A) - it swaps to 20fps, f/5.6, f/1600th, AutoIso, AND C1 + SD(auto)
Studio work menu bank (C) is slightly different as is my Menu bank for Landscape (D).

I was leaning Z9 too. I like the grip a lot and its comfort in the vertical position. But money is a factor at this time and I may force myself into a smaller watercraft ($$). So I decided at this time to be thankful for the Z8. I love this camera.
The problem I have is that I cannot see the boxes.... and I cannot discern red from green or even see either of them in most natural backgrounds. Literally, I cannot even see any red or green box. I have requested in writing to Nikon that an upcoming firmware offer the Focus Peaking colors as an option for people who have this color deficiency. That would be fantastic for me.

People having battery issues must have something egregious enabled in their settings. In general, I always suggest leaving it in airplane mode while in the field. I'm at over 2000+ pics taken on this battery with about 200 of those copied to SD with 1 bar of battery lost.
I always turn my camera off instead of letting it sleep as well, since startup time is so damn fast these days. I'm sure that helps a lot.

has anyone used the 14-30S and Sony 16-35F4PZ side by side? I currently have the Sony, and it works great with the adapter, but sometimes I want wider than 16.

You might want to start a separate thread about your question. This thread is specifically about the Nikon Z8.
