A friend who also got his Z9 recently pointed out to me since he prefers to do about everything with his RIGHT hand, he set the delete button to the Video red button on the top right. He much prefers that kind of access. I personally don't mind the delete button right where it is. It's an individual choice to be sure.
Yes, I also find this works well in Playback via the EVF and typical editing after a burst etc, with LOck-image and Zoom on Fn1 and Fn2, respectively. The Z9 and now Z8 have significantly refined using Right-Hand only custom controls, which some Nikonians find works well with the Lens-Controls especially handholding telephotos. The D6 also improves the customs well for Right-hand brigade. I find one needs access to custom more controls with the MILCs compared even to a D6 : for Handover AF as well as wysiwyg photography.
As memory serves, the Delete and Change-Focus buttons are 2 Nikon has never allowed customizing,
In any case it's hard to imagine how many Z8 and Z9 owners utilize 26 buttons when they actually have their eye to the EVF, (28 in Z9). Even the maximum of 15 controls close to one's fingers shooting Horizontal with the Z9, plus shutter release and the pair of scroll wheels....
