Some things I really am looking forward too is the AF tracking, it sounds like I won't lose people when they turn on me. Maybe my top 5 reasons to go for it. Second is I can still use electronic shutter with minimum roll in APSC mode that might have sold me right there(credit to someone on this thread that mentioned that). 3 is im back to 61mpx which I like to test lenses but hey 50mpx was good too. Lens stabilization was up there . Finding out it did have anti flicker and variable shutter which are only on the newest models A9II, A1 its on my A7rV as well. Im in heaven on that one. Fighting LED banding is tough enough. Lower mechanical noise on shutter. Same setup as my A7IV with buttons, and placements. I may not even know what camera I have in my hands. I love that sameness. I love the top right dial now's I can put focus area on that and lock it down. See I did my homework.
Plus some other things . The one thing I lost was 1/400 flash sync. But not the biggest deal. One thing I realized was full HDMI input which when I shoot live in ballroom I may not need my computer and be tethered I can just go to ballroom HDMI production booth for big screens. That alone maybe huge for me. I will have more to talk about Tuesday. It's coming in hot like overnight. I also saved the tax man . Plus I am at less financial risk . Drove me crazy when I had Medium Format Phase backs. Thats a lot of money to hit the deck
Important but my A1 is going to a nice member and I like its finding a new home. I did love that cam, no question but Mama wanted new shoes too. Happy wife happy life. ...Show more →
"Sony A7R V autofocus, AI, subject detection"
Check out this A7rV Auto focus, AI scrutiny starting at the 16:58 mark in the Video. Pretty much spells out the good and the less than perfect--but even at the less than perfect, not sure we can call these slight misses "not good" and I'm sure this will improve with firmware over time.
This looks like it could help improve hit rates on your catwalk projects. But better than the A1's other attributes is the question...
Also what I learned from this video is that we get CDAF only in the borders of the frame--I guess I hadn't realized that previously but also not in the habit of placing action in the borders of the frame intentionally---but good to know regardless and never say never, particularly shooting motocross or other high action events.
A7rV AI AF "Better than the A7rIV, but not better overall than the Canon R5"--Gordon. He also feels the new A7rV AI AF is less automated than what he hoped, meaning still have to push a lot buttons to select AI subjects rather than like the Canon AI auto-subject recognition.

Maybe just me but I would rather be the one telling the camera on a specific thing that I want it in focus. If you have a person, car, and animal in the shot for example I wouldn't want the camera deciding which I want in focus.

I think many of us prefer to control our AF points for the most part.
However there are times when I forget to go into the menus and change from Animal Eye AF back to Human Eye AF. This has caught me a few times already when I noticed Human EyeAF was not as responsive/accurate as it should be. In this scenario I would prefer the Canon approach--Eye AF knows it's a human or animal. Maybe a small thing, and who knows I've not yet seen a direct comparison to see how accurate Canon Auto aware AI approach is by comparison.

Just quick test of bird eye AF outside my front door These are just a couple KB's but came from 16mp files from the 70-350 on the RV. The full 16mp files I'm very happy with.
Edit: I made a test page on flicker so you can see them in better detail.

Buy a Samsung then you will not need updates
If it doesn't come with what you want that's no ones fault but your own. There are so many good camera's across brands it's just ludicrous to buy a camera that doesn't meet your needs then complain about not getting an update
There always has to be someone with an obtuse comment.

That 70-350 looks alright! Would you recommend it?

PM me and I can send you the 16mp files which look way better for you to judge This lens was another reason I was excited about the better IBIS in the RV. I have had the 200-600 and 100-400 plus 1.4 and 2x converters. All great lenses and options but soo big in comparison. This small 70-350 with the Riv & RV sensor is a great pairing for me. I love the small/compact nature and it is actually really sharp. You can't tell by these small files we have to post here but In my opinion is a lens that doesn't get enough love.

Looks nice and sharp . I have a ton of Canadian Geese out my back door. Im on a golf course , maybe I will go pick a few off. . Wait I can't do that I need my A1 for that stuff. Okay bad joke
Actually in all seriousness once I upgrade my 70-200 Version II for the A7rV that maybe a good test . There like 50 yards out my back gate

When I upgraded the GM 70-200II to be more compatible with the A7rV's new IBIS system when that firmware first came out, I had no idea/intention back then to ever buy the A7rV. Maybe Fate knew something I didn't at the time 😎
GM 70-200 ver II is a BEAUTIFUL 70-200. Every time I scroll through some of my event catalogs from late last year, the ver II portraits always catch my eye and I stop and pixel peep of course. For an event zoom, the GM 70-200 VII is gold!

We have both been around forever and like you Im sure we tried them all in all brands no less. There simply is not a better 70-200 that I have used. Its a brilliant lens and I may never sell it.

Sorry If I missed this somewhere...But what Sony lenses are capable of up to the A7rV's 8-stop IBIS?
I already know about the lenses that were recently firmware updated for this purpose:
FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS
FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS
FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II
Is there a list somewhere of the other Sony lenses capable of up to the A7rV's 8-stop IBIS? Thanks!

I don't know about other canon cameras, but Canon R5 does not have auto subject selection. You need to select people, animals, and vehicles. To my knowledge only Nikon Z9 has full auto mode.
