So, they put this feature in the RV but not the 11k video specific camera or the higher quality video A1? I wonder what the reasoning is for that.

More than anything else, or more specifically, with this info, I'm more convinced than before that there will be a firmware update on the A1 to include some of the features of the RV.

For my backup body A7III, Sony has provided 8 FW upgrades over its 4-3/4 year time since its release, with the latest FW 4.01 released last year. That is excellent in my view. A1 owners, just let them know what you want, Sony really seems to be customer driven.

The local UPS driver rocks .. My R5 was delivered at 6:25PM on a snowy dark night (sun set at 4:45pm). He had to chain up to drive our road.

For those expecting Sony to push all the new features to an Alpha 1 version 2 your wait maybe not that long IMHO. Sony is probably waiting, if they can, to see the Canon EOS R5II, the Nikon Z8, and even possibly the Canon EOS R1 probably in late 2023 at the earliest.

Also, once sales and market penetration for the new A7RV is understood, and what features attracted its buyers, they will be in a better position to understand if the Alpha 1 needs a firmware speed bump to keep it in its position and not force Sony to lower its price to keep it relevant.

I would think the 2024 Olympics will dictate the release of the next A1.

I got an RV today; I've spent most of the day setting it up and getting a general feel for it. As expected it has lots of usability improvements over the RIV, including the viewfinder and higher resolution articulating screen, snappier operation, lossless compressed RAW, focus stacking, etc. As expected, focus is noticeably better in low light and tracking is stickier in every way.

I'm impressed by the new camera's IS. I need to test more, but my impression is that it will reliably give me at least two more stops of hand holding. That means I can use lower ISO in many situations. To me, that's the equivalent of a meaningful image quality improvement. I can't reliably get critically sharp 1 second exposures, like some reviewers have claimed. But if I brace and take care, I can get some pretty damn sharp images at that shutter speed, which to me is almost unbelievable. Reliably pin sharp? I'm estimating 1/15 or so. Currently, with the RIV, I shoot multiples for anything under 1/60th hand held if I want to make sure to have a critically sharp image.

The other thing about having such good IS is that it seems like it might be possible to make image stacks or do basic focus stacks hand held. When shooting a burst, a focus stack of four, or even a set of four pixel shift exposures hand held, the camera's improved IS can keep things surprisingly well aligned. I'll be experimenting to see what kind of hand held image stacking is possible.

By the way, the leather half case I've been using with the RIV fits the RV. The screen area of the V is clearly thicker in profile, but it has slight clearance above the bottom of the camera. So the actual footprint of the two cameras seems identical. I would guess that any L plate or motor drive that fits the IV will fit the V.

None of us know what Sony will and what they will not do. But them looking at what Canon/Nikon do is irrelevant . Sony has been ahead of them for a long time in mirrorless. I jumped a long time ago. Sonys motto IMHO is find 5 technologies they can add to a camera and then fit it into the best market for Profit. It's not rocket science. Sure a A1 line is your top dog but throw enough tech in a A7RV and look what you get. They added at least 5 better options or feature sets and this will sell for quite awhile. Don't look at release day anymore I think they been producing behind the scenes this A7RV for quite awhile now and looking more long term sales. This may even beat on a few doors of A1 users. I know I could switch over. There are shooters like me that want certain things but can do without 30fps and even some silent shutter abilities to keep costs down. This whole notion of Nikon/ Canon actually mattering to them is really nonsense they have not mattered since the A7R came out. Now granted today it may mean more but they been riding a free ride with mirrorless for quite awhile.

I would like to switch actually and I wanted to do it this year for the Tax break but im to close to a big job and I hate buying this time of year because of the shipping. I already did my shopping this year. I will watch this and try a few things in LA to see how well the A7IV does with the A1 in place. I can do a little less with the A1 and use the A7IV on some shooting. Worst case I could walk into Samy's in LA and walk out with anything I want. Im paying the same tax now and apparently this will be in stock as we are seeing

I may call Sony Pro service in LA and have one sent over to me. They will do loaners to Pro members. Love to test it

To me this is the real shocker still in stock at both Adorama and BH a day after release. That never happens. I think the shelves are full.

We can speculate that in a few ways but to me its they made a shit load of them

What is more shocking is Best Buy having them in stock. I would assume they never get as many as Adorama and B&H.
Mine comes Thursday but of course I'm traveling

I chatted online with BHPhoto Monday afternoon to see if they anticipated having any stock remaining after filling the pre-orders. They said that they didn't know at time but that the pre-order list was VERY LONG. Woke up on Tuesday and wow. BH, Adorama, Beach, BB, and Crutchfield all had some in in stock so I snagged one.

Wanting to see if @GMPhotography ends up getting one. Just an FYI; you're the guy that has taught me that life is short so upgrade whenever you can. Of course I'm upgrading from my trusty A7r ii and not going from an A1 to the A7R v; that would be a really tough decision. Anyway, good luck with the decision and just remember; you'll get great photos regardless of which camera is in your experienced and trusty hands.

Also pretty late in the holiday season for an expense this high for hobbies I think. Most had already planned any large expenses like this.

yeah. I just now finally upgraded my trusty old Early 2015 13” MBP, so my personal equipment budget is blown for a little while.

In fact, I wasn’t even thinking of upgrading my R III yet. But dammit, y’all are a bad influence! I don’t know when, but leaning more towards this new one. Enough interesting features.

Some reasons that can explain why the A7R5 might not sell that well:

1. A lot of the potentional buyers now use the A1, how many of those are really interested in the R5?
2. In most countries the price went up significantly.
3. The sensor is the same old. Better IBIS, focus stacking, rear screen etc is nice, but is that something that many users want pay all that money for? I guess the improved AF is the best argument for upgrading.

Can't speak for anyone else and I thought about the RV hard as a companion to my A1. However the A1 gives me everything I want or need in both stills and video plus some so I decided to hold off on the RV. I do not even know why some are needing an A1 firmware update so bad. My A1 is fantastic even the way it is now. Anyway decided on the A7IV as a companion for my A1. Just received it and its great as well. If anything I will hold off for the AII.

Overall a camera that doesn’t make a ton of sense in the Sony lineup, and feels like a camera they felt they had to release instead of one they wanted to. It’s full of compromises in a market where Sony’s competitors are throwing the kitchen sinks at their flagships.

Who could have seen all of this excess launch day stock coming?!

I think the most popular feature some A1 owners like to have in their A1 is the focus bracket that can be done with FW update. I want that feature in my A1 too.

It was more than enough to get me to upgrade from my a7R III. I think we're reaching a level of maturity where expectations that each camera release is going to destroy the prior version, or crosses over and trounces other model lines, is unrealistic.

New technology released in this camera will be refined and most likely included in the next iteration of the other model lines.

That's a good use case upgrade. For the vast majority of camera shoppers, especially in the beginning of December during a terrible economy, an expensive niche high res camera body isn't the barn burner a lot of people want it to be. This thread has proved that most A1 owners, sensibly, are waiting to see if their body gets the focus stacking via FW (probably won't) or just wait for the mark ii body and get all these features.
