Looking forward to getting this camera in my hands next week. Interestingly Best Buy has usually closed it's pre-orders because it reached it's first delivery amounts by now. I see they are still accepting. Maybe others are not as interested, kinda like when the A9ii was released. That said I think this RV offers much more of an upgrade over the Riv than the A9ii did over the A9. I'm most interested in the AF and IBIS. EVF and LCD etc.. are just bonuses.

I think it’s just that production shortages finally seem to be better. At least here in germany many items are readily available, that had shortages before. Like an Xbox series X for example. Or the Sony a6xxx family cameras. Certain variants of the Nintendo Switch. The Tamron 35-150 for Sony. These are just some items that a saw yesterday in an ordinary German electronic market. A couple months ago they would get maybe a few of these, and they would be gone fast. Now most of the stuff just seems to be in stock. Most of our photography chains still have a couple A7RV too. But thats because they had gotten dozens, in some cases hundreds per chain.

It's obvious RV is overpriced for what it is. I think it will be in stock everywhere pretty soon.

I don't agree that it's overpriced but it's probably going to be in stock because there are so many great cameras available right now. From all the manufacturers. Most of them are cheaper than this one but that doesn't mean this one is overpriced.

How do you determine something is overpriced? And for who is it overpriced? Obviously people are buying them so it appears the price is ok with some. The beauty is there are many different cameras at many different prices…choose whatever you think is a deal.

RIV was out of stock for quite a few months and supply chain was much smoother at that time. RV could conceivably be in stock pretty much everywhere after Tuesday. When was the last camera that becomes in stock at release? That is a clear indication that RV's sale will be a dud because the performance/price ratio is not there.

Last time i checked, digital camera is still considered a technology item. People expect either same spec for lower money, or higher spec for same money over time. Throwing a few software improvements is nice, but that's expected to go along with hard spec improvements, not driving sales alone with some feature enhancements, especially after more than 3 years over the last iteration.

There is always a portion of people who think an item is priced right, and a portion who think an item is overpriced. But the percentage will be different between different items.

If a new item becomes in stock pretty soon compared to past history even after factoring other causes, then in my opinion it's overpriced. Or is that correlation too hard for you to grasp?

Many of those products are quite old and have been out a while, and the backlog of people that STILL need one shrinks with every stock refresh.

Sony never seems to have the stock issues that other brands suffer from, for whatever reason, unless you're talking about the 600/4

Hmm... I guess Sony should have made less of them, then I guess by your wisdom, you'd be absolutely sure it was a success?

How many have they manufactured and shipped to suppliers, and what percentage has sold? How does this compare to other releases, or are you just sort of winging this?

In any case, time will provide insight how successful or unsuccessful a camera it is. Not someone posting here right now on FM.

Let's wait and see....

Thinking it will be Wednesday or Thursday. And Friday I have to report for jury duty...and may be consumed with that the whole following week.

So unfortunately I'm not sure how much shooting time I'll get. I imagine we'll have quite a few others on here who might have more chances to get out with it.

Well just came to this forum and it’s taken me a while to catch up.
I do have a pre-order in but deciding if I really want it. I sold my A7IV and A7RIV last month so
I consider this cost neutral. I also own the Alpha 1 so this not planned to replace it but continue to be focused more on landscape, architecture, and people/events because I’m hoping it has the same color science that the A7IV had and then the new improvements in human Eye AF. To me, for people, the color science of the A7IV is better than the Alpha 1. Don’t know if others agree or not.

Also, the frame rate would be nice if it was higher, but I’ve lived with this frame rate for people/events for a long time. For BIF, wildlife, and sports I will be using my A1.

So is it worth it? Sure would be nice to save $500 off it but if it were I think Sony would not have given us the all the higher end improvements like high quality/resolution EVF, the new tilt-flippy screen rear LCD, 8-stop IBIS, new AF hardware and some of the other features.

Having another body with the same menu and viewfinder as the Alpha 1 to use with it is a plus in my book.

Sony is there to make money. Money left on the table may very well mean money not earned later. Purposely creating a long backlog a lot of times is a bad business decision unless there is a significant financial reason to reduce production capacity.

So exactly what volume of peorders have been made globally, and what is the initial stock? I doubt you have insight into either. But honestly I don't think that has a big impact on whether a camera is successful.

To me the success of a camera is based on a longer time period, not based on some guess as to preorder volume versus initial shipment volume.

So I guess we'll agree to disagree.

Again time will tell....

What’s your view of past history when the A7R4 “became in stock” after release. Do you feel it’s good business plans to not have stock of equipment when released? The bottom line here is this camera is not for you. Move on and have a look at alternatives. Me, I stay off the bleeding edge and buy most of my gear used for a fraction of the price it was released at.

I doubt sony increased production for RV specifically. Rather it's going to be in stock soon because the preorder list is just short. And popularity of preorder is an indicator on long term sale prospect assuming no price change. That's my personal take.

This is so illogical. You are not willing to pay full price for RV. By what you are saying, so this camera is not for you. But you expect to buy a camera not for you later. Anyway, sorry i'm not going to try comprehending what you wrote anymore.

Why do you feel it’s illogical? I just don’t see the value in the A7R5 at $4500 compared to a lightly used A7R4 at $1800. What is it that you don’t understand with this.

Same with you. If you feel the A7R5 is priced too high for your wallet, look for something else that better meets your budget. Don’t blame Sony for not being able to afford the new A7R5.

Is this just wild ass guesses on your part or do you have some insider knowledge on the production levels and pre-order numbers.

In your mind, those cameras and lenses released by Canon and Nikon which could not be found anywhere after release a big success. After all, they are not in stock so they must be wildly successful.

You asked for my take, and i gave you my personal take. You of course can throw out all the caveats, and i'm not here to spend effort to disapprove each of those. To me, theoretically is it possible the preorder list is longer than rIv and still all get fullfilled by now, yes. Common sense wise, unlikely. But you are free to believe your own wild ass guess otherwise.

And i'm not comparing to canon or nikon. Rather how the preorder of previous sony models went.
