Very interesting video about FW updates. They make a strong case that the FW capabilities of some of the cheaper cameras exceed what is in the flagship A1. I did not know that although animal eye focus is a menu option for video in the A1, it does not work. That's bizarre!
They were careful to not confuse capabilities that are purely FW from capabilities that require new processors, like the AI processor in the A7R5. That will have to wait for the A1II.
Dave
Actually there are some that are photo centric. The one that I've been waiting for ever is focus bracketing. Until the R5, Sony was the only brand that didn't have it. I was tempted to purchase the A7R5 for that one feature but then I would have played Sony's game. Now I have a Nikon Z6ii just for that purpose, but it will be more practical and cheaper to stay within one ecosystem, and one camera that does everything I need.
If Sony doesn't add focus bracketing in the near feature, I'm so mad that I'm considering switching fully to Nikon.

Still use my A7R2 for landscapes. Would love to have 61mpix, but I’m getting by with 42.
ya know, I’m actually thinking of picking up another a7RIIIa since the prices on even a new one are getting pretty cheap. I can’t lay out for even a used A1 right now, and only that one would interest me for a silent shutter that’ll work with LED lighting. Since I’m already in the habit of doing MF a lot, why spend more at this point?

I concur with Chez, I will continue on with my RII since I am now heavy style="display:none;"> style="display:none;"> style="display:none;"> vested in MF lens.. Now, I will eventually pick up RIIIA possibly around Black Friday... ...Show more →
Like you, I shoot predominantly MF lenses. One point I would like to emphasize about the a7RII and MF lenses: the a7R4 viewfinder sharpness leaves the R2 in the dust. I have the one R4 and two R2's, and it is very tough getting accurate MF on fine details in magnified view on the R2 compared to the R4.
I love the images produced by the R2's, but not the manual focusing. R3's sort of interest me, but again the VF is not so great as the R4. I guess I'll keep the R2's until used prices come down further on the R4.
Still and all, a used R2 is probably the best deal on quality imaging (sensor) available today....Show more →
I am almost exclusively shooting landscapes off a tripod and using the rear lcd to focus. Not really an issue for me getting sharp focus. ...Show more →
Perhaps I didn't clarify properly: I am shooting hand held and using the viewfinder for focusing MF lenses. Viewfinder sharpness/detaill on a7R2 is decidedly inferior to a7R4....Show more →

If not, Sony wasted a lot of money developing the AI processor.
You are right of course.
I am just surprised that the difference is so stark in that french video comparison, as I don't really have any complaints about A1's performance on that front .

Hmm, come to think of it - one significant downgrade from A1 (for casual shooting) would be the Silent/EFCS/Mechanical shutter juggling again.
Unless Sony introduced a smart auto for shutter with A7RV, but I don't think that's the case?

That's what I'm talking about!! Thank goodness I don't have to buy a new computer to gain access to new Windows (or Apple) features! Or, a new car to gain access to the latest update of Android Auto (or Apple Carplay).
And, the profit margin would be a LOT higher for Sony if they simply charged (a reasonable price) for upgrades. Win-win!

Im trying to figure this part out as far as electronic shutter / mechanical and EFCS is this ACT like the A1 especially silent shutter. It does not have the fast sensor readout and im questioning how silent shutter will act. Does it black out or does it kinda blink longer. I have yet to watch any videos im in the dark on the topic. I mean I love how the A1 acts with electronic silent shutter and I can accept some slow down or longer blink lets call it

I think this is purely dependent on readout speed so no way around blackout/slideshow...
There is nothing special about the focus bracket settings. I see no reason such a simple procedure cannot be added to a FW update for other cameras. Despite what I wrote earlier about FW testing. I'm hoping, after initial feedback with the Rv in the field, they backport bracketing to other A7's.
The step width dependence on lens attached is "a relative value." So no lens dependent information is used.

There's nothing technical about it, it's only Sony's policy.

If Apple can put the latest operating system and features on a six year old phone, Sony could have changed the focusing box on A7R3 to red. Perhaps Sony does not have a truly unified underlying OS for their cameras allowing features to be moved from one to the other. If that’s the case however, that’s a blundering engineering mistake. If it’s not the case, then Sony is just being lazy or greedy or both.
Sigh. As an R3 owner I share your pain. I think this sort of thing has to be weighed in when you consider the value proposition of buying a camera. I've move to renting more and buying less - and the "buy a new camera to get basic fw updates" is part of the reason. As a hobbyist, especially, it ends up making more and more sense to have a basic set of gear for emergent opportunities, and renting the current expensive stuff when I really need (which isn't all that often). I can actually afford the expensive stuff, it just sticks in my craw how little stuff gets upgraded these days and how closed the Sony (and pretty much everyone else non-phone camera gear) system is. (I find I miss even the crappy Sony app framework (abandoned before the R3) every now and then - if they had stuck with it and kept expanding it I think it would have made a big difference.)
And yes I know they have a "new" SDK (which doesn't support the R3 at all, btw) - but that isn't callable from a phone - I suppose I could get a small form factor linux handheld - but that seems a lot to get field programmability back ; )

Anybody on this topic actually have an R5 in hand? I am curious about the IBIS......saw a video from a link on here that showed a photographer taking pics at up to 3.2 sec with little shake. I went ahead and did a pre-order for one today.......shooting an A1 and I love it, but it's overkill for me, particularly the FPS speed since I don't shoot sports or BIF. I think the A7R5 will be a better fit for what I am shooting.

Given that the camera is not shipping yet, there is a very small group of people have have access to the camera. Not sure you get a lot of participation from those type of people here on the FM forum. The only one of seen on here who has (or had) the a7R V is Albert Dros.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought....doesn't hurt to ask though. I may hit Albert up with a couple of specific questions, he's usually very helpful. Thanks

I’m going to keep my A1 I need electronic shutter and no blackout. Maybe we will see some updates soon for it. As it is today I don’t miss any runway shots with the A1.

Has anyone noticed how the LCD screen on the RV has a large chin now? The bezel at the bottom is larger than the top. I think it's going to annoy me until I get used to it.
Now I see they've increased the resolution and size of the LCD but what's the point if the increased in size is just going into the bezel?
p.21 #17 · Official: Sony A7R V announced (pre-orders now available)
No, I hadn't noticed that.
I've shot an a7R III for 5 years and I can't tell you if it has a bezel, and if so, how symmetrical it is.
So I'm probably not a good data point....

My guess is that there is a bezel so you don't end up accidentally interacting (via touch) with the LCD while trying to move it. And maybe they expect you do grab the bottom while adjusting?

I'm wondering if the screen real estate changes depending on what you're viewing or what mode you're in. I think I've seen glimpses of the screen real estate being more utilized but most videos skim past it.

The screen's both larger and has a slightly different aspect ratio. I think the thicker bezel on the bottom facilitates the expected touch points for pulling the screen away from the body (same reason the rIV has a thicker bezel on the left side, where the screen's grip tabs are located).
