These events are an entirely different experience outside. I started with the the 70-200 and figured I'd "try" the 100-400 if I felt like there would be enough light. As it turned out, I shot only the 1st class with the 70-200 and used the 100-400 the rest of the day and was quite please with it.

This seems like a fair and proportionate review from a highly competent wildlife photographer. Would be interested to hear opinions from those who already have a Z9. (still waiting for mine!).

What lock- on settings do you use (steady/erratic, 1- 5)?

The Z9 continues to produce in revenue service for my company with excellent AF accuracy, high frame rate and ease of adaptability for F Mount lenses.
Battery life, durability, reliability and high ISO performance have far exceeded my expectations and I am getting used to the viewfinder.

When I use the Nikon500mm pf, it is difficult to track because the bird is close to me and panning becomes more difficult.
When using the Z mount 24-120mm because the bird is dark and the sky is bright, I still could not get a bif photo that satisfies me like what I would get with the egretta or white seagull

Who said eye AF doesn't work with vegetation around!
Was out this morning and looked to my left and saw this guy, got off 2 shots and this was one, the other was the same. It then ran into the woods. Healthy Coyote watching me! Not a great image but was interesting to see!

Z9, 500pf
I like his curious expression, peaking through the foliage. That had to be a fun moment! What were your AF settings? Looks like the Z9 nailed it.
