So Arbitrage .. so far you seem quite impressed with the z9. Time to rate it against the a1. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
No, certainly not time. I would lose all credibility if I started ranking it after shooting for 3.5 hours on a day where ISO 6400 was the norm just to get 1/1000 SS
There is so much noise in my Bufflehead IF images that I have no idea if the image is in focus or not

Beautiful frame. TFS. But just so I understand, are you saying that you were getting much better results with 400E + 2x TC compared to 600E (I suppose using both at f/5.6?)?! I find that a bit strange. I don’t have a Z9 but this certainly was not the case with my D5. So what is about Z9 that you think might possibly explain your observation?!
Thanks

Two words come to mind with the Z9......very capable. This is with the 400E. I can't imagine the 400S being better. I shot some with the 2X TC on the 400E and got some nice results..... much much better than on the 600E. I will post a few of those (400E with the 2x) when I get a chance.
Normally I dont post this large but with the subject this thin I felt it needed to be larger for a better viewing experience.

A few mundane shots from my dreary day. Nice to finally have a Nikon with decent AF via the tilt screen for my ground level shooting!!
I love your low angle, it makes these “mundane” images very compelling to look it.

Oh no. The 600E with the 1.4TC is really good and from what little I have shot with the 1.7TC on the 600E I am very impressed with that combo also.
I was just saying that the 400E with the 2xTC is much better than the 2xTC on the the 600E.....at least for action. Still subjects may deem it usable. I didnt use the 2X on the 600e much...... as I could tell immediately that it was giving me soft images of a Grackle in flight.

Oh, thanks for the clarification. That makes sense. I have never been very happy with my results with 600E+2x on my D5, and stopped using that combo long ago. But, yes, 600E+1.4x does perform pretty well.

I just got mine today. It came in a few days ago, but work prevented me from picking it up. I went straight from the store to a place to shoot, charging the battery in car(it would be nice if it was fully charged considering it was -20 here today!). But at 1/2 power I shot over 1200 images with lots of power to spare. I've used Sony A9 and A1, and so far I'd say it's in the same league. One thing I did notice, is it picked up the subject easier against a busy BG than I remember my Sony's. Usually they like the BG if the subject isn't large in the frame. That's using the 500PF with 1.4x. It doesn't balance as well on my shoulder strap due to the extra weight and extension of the FTZ adapter, so I'll have to modify the foot the move the balance point more towards the camera at some point.

I am still trying to figure that out too Geoff. I was shooting with a friend a couple of days ago and he helped me. The one thing that I wasnt doing was pressing the "Disp" button beside the "af on" button.
Not sure if I can duplicate it but I will press on until I can use this option. Here is an image I got using the back screen flipped out.

Which AF mode and Tracking settings are you using when it is working well to pick up off of busy backgrounds? I'm finding quite the opposite where the Z9 is getting confused by backgrounds a lot more than the A1. Of course there are a lot of factors at play with type of lighting and size of the bird in the frame.

I used wide area with subject recognition to auto. I didn't try other modes since I only had a few hours, but it seemed to preferentially focus close versus locking on to the BG. Mind you, light was bright and behind me and I didn't try other modes.

Ok. I feel I am making progress.
To quickly go from Viewfinder to Back screen display for shooting down low via the back screen.....
Set your display to "AUTO DISPLAY" by hitting the small button to the left of the EVF.
Then hit "DISPLAY" button beside the "AF-ON" button. If the rear screen is not active and ready to shoot keep clicking.
You can go back and forth without selecting anything once it is set......if you have your eye to the EVF it will be active. Once you take your eye away from the EVF then the backscreen is active and ready for the low angle shot.
This is a sweet option to get low and use your preferred focus option which for me is BBF.
