Recently, I got a great opportunity to get some pics of a great horned owl. There two owls in one of my barns on one of my farms. I took a 32 shot burst shooting in RAW Compressed and 20 FPS. Only the very first and very last pictures were not usable. The first I was probably a bit trigger happy and hit the release button before he was in focus. The last I missed because the owl got to the minimum focus distance before veering off at the last moment. I was standing in the barn in heavy shadows so he/she didn't see me until the last moment.
They say shooting something that is coming straight towards you is one of the hardest things for a camera to focus on. If that really is the case my Z9 performed admirably.
I was shooting in manual mode with the camera set to Auto ISO mode. Also I had the 500pf lens on the Z9. The image with the pair of owls was taken a couple of days later with the 100-400S mounted on the Z9. All of the images are uncropped but have been straightened due to me holding the camera unlevel.

Musk Lorikeet outside my window. I was quite excited to see this bird as it is not common and I have been wanting to get a photo of one in the wild for a while.

I love it when I see wildlife and humans living in harmony. I've seen too much of the other. This one obviously is enjoying its visit with you. .
Anything more we might like to know about Musk Lorikeets?
Regarding the 400 2.8. I can never see any difference between images taken with a 400 2.8/TC 1.4 vs a 400 2.8/TC 2.0.
Thanks
Robert
Thank you for your thoughts, Robert.
The only information I have is that they are uncommon and I have rarely seen them in the wild but they are not endangered and are of "least concern". They are only found in the south eastern edge of Australia. They are about 60-90gms and a little smaller than a rainbow lorikeet. So, I was very happy to see this little guy and have him perch for me for a few minutes whilst I took his photo. He was about 7mts away.
Added support for NIKKOR Z 85 mm f/1.2 S lenses.
• Improved focus accuracy for low-contrast subjects during burst photography with [Wide-area AF (S)], [Wide-area AF (L)], [Wide-area AF (C1)], [Wide-area AF (C2)], [3D-tracking], or [Auto-area AF] selected for [AF-area mode].
• Improved the frame advance rate during burst photography with optional flash units.
• Fixed the following issues:
- The [Retouch] > [Trim] item in the playback “i” menu would in rare cases create distorted copies or not permit selection of the desired crop.
- Copies created by blending a large number of pictures together using the [Retouch] > [Lighten] item in the playback “i” menu would sometimes exhibit a green color cast.
- Rating pictures during playback zoom would in some instances temporarily corrupt the display.
- In extremely rare cases, the camera would stop responding.

Great job, and I have heard people complain that the AF on the Z9 sucks and can't do fast action and sucks at high iso. FoleyAMG wrote:

The AF certainly does not suck, actually very very good. Definitely comparable to my A1s...one of the biggest differences is just how bright the viewfinder is on the Z9...it is noticeable, I mean significantly...I also liked the ruggedness of the Z9 over the A1, especially in that environment (rodeo)...I shoot in RAW...images out of the camera on the Nikon are close to perfect every single time...Sony RAW requires a little more editing...both cameras produce exceptional images...I could show you a dozen shots taken with the Sony that are spectacular as well...

I consider both to be great cameras, there's just nothing about the A1 that would personally get me to switch back to Sony since I never enjoyed shooting Sony that much. I just deal with a lot of different perspectives from somebody I know and he just insists that the Nikon sucks when I think all of this is just his own personal shortcomings as a photographer. So I will admit, I was one of those Sony diehards...shot from the beginning before that was a Canon DSLR 1Dxxxx owner...never shot a Nikon camera, literally in 52 years...the I was down in Florida with a close friend who is not afraid to shoot any camera and he told me to try his Nikon Z9 with the 400 F4.5 and the 400 TC z mount...I was floored shooting birds in flight and the quality of the Z9...so I splurged and trading a Hasselblad X1DII 50 c for the Nikon Z9, found a used 300 F2.8 VRii and shot the rodeo...we would joke how bad Nikon was but I really had no frame of reference...I picked up the Z9 and wow...I am eating crow......

I'm younger. Got my mirrorless start on Fuji, but got my photography start on Nikon DSLR. Loved both systems, wanted something lighter, got Fuji, then wanted something better in low light so got a Sony A7RII, got more Sony, had a shoot that went abysmal (two actually), got back into Nikon, really liked the Z6II and got myself a Z9. I could've gotten an A9II and eventually an A1, but never really enjoyed shooting Sony so bounced out of it slow and steady. Sony...just not my system, but it's a capable system. FoleyAMG wrote:

Yesterday I randomly discovered that DXO now supports HE files from the Z9, I don't recall reading it in their update manifesto but maybe I missed it. Since DXO recently updated most of their software, I tried converting a HE NEF out of curiosity and to my surprise it worked. So if there's any other DXO users like me who have been looking forward to switching over to HE files, it looks like we're able to do that now. Z100-400 (and TC) profiles are there as well (finally). I believe this applies both to Pure Raw 3 and Photo Lab 6.
