I wonder how many of these NPS people had no interest in this camera until they saw how much they were selling for on eBay. I’d be willing to bet some of them figured they could make a quick buck by flipping them. That really pisses me off.

Flippers are most likely to be gear heads than professionals. One of our members here clearly proved that you don’t have to be NPS to receive two Z9. Not all Z9 are being sold to only NPS. So there is no proof that any of the one on eBay is from NPS.
You can be pissed all you want but your Z9 is somewhere and it’ll come to you.

It's not the fault of the local camera store (which is a great store, btw). I have no problem with the fact that professional photographers get to cut in line. It is all of the other NPS members that bother me. This is not a recent phenomenon.

Then maybe you should look at the criteria for becoming NPS. If someone on the street can join NPS without making their income related to photography, then surely you can figure out how to join NPS and get your Z9 and be happy.

So, since you are focusing in on the ethics of "some NPS members", it would be remiss to not point out that you "cut in line" (albeit an imaginary line at that time) months prior to the line starting officially at 0800 hours ET on 28 October 2021, and that this was supported by your LCS.

I guarantee you when 800PF comes, it will be much much more ugly than this. I am told 800PF was already preordered by lots of customers in dealers. Of course number is not as Z9 but remember how slow NIKON can make you one 500PF?

I posted since last week that NIKON better to handle Z9 NPS delivery to all members directly while keeping open orders delivery in dealers simultaneously. Everyone seems to be so silent about it except those NPS members calling me a whiner. Now in fact, a lot of us are on the same boat. I don't blame NPS members. Anyway it's NIKON's job to make it better. If NIKON wants to gain its market share back, it should turn its eye sight to non pro users.

You were told by whom that 800PF preorder is already happening? Putting your name on a list without any commitment to buy(without putting CC or deposit) is meaningless. And you have put deposit, I hope Nikon will charge 16K for the 800PF so all you early cheaters will lose the deposit money for blindly creating false hype of something that isn't existed yet.

Car dealerships don't just reserve your allocation on the vehicle being built unless they take a deposit from you. Otherwise, how do they know they're not stuck with a car that only you want.

I don’t get it. Nikon fills all NPS orders in first 3 weeks on a camera in high demand during an unprecedented supply shortage, meaning all future production will now flow to non-NPS members. And yet, folks still are not happy.

People say they will cancel their order if they don’t get a Z9 by mid to end of January (3-5 weeks after shipping began). Well I guess they don’t really have much use for the camera anyway. I think there is more GAS going on here then real desire to use the camera for photography.

Because they want it now without having signed up for the NPS service while also preordering late. I'm not going to be the bad guy because I have enough of an investment in Nikon and also use the stuff for my actual bill paying job and Nikon actually respects that enough to allow me into said service to give me decent enough priority to not have me wait forever for their camera. NPS isn't even that hard to get into. The hardest part of my application was actually finding images from work that were small enough file wise to not crash their upload site.

This was what I've been hinting throughout this thread again and again. Look at the criteria to become NPS instead of complaining. That will get you the camera you desperately want. No Nikon rep is going to read through this thread and tell their upper management to change their system of fulfilling future orders.

I could've joined this years ago...I think really depends on how long they would've accepted the D4 and which lenses I had at the time that were Nikon and not third party. Honestly the Z mount is a very easy gateway into NPS since they basically accept all of it.

I was not aware that putting down a deposit after a development announcement by Nikon (March 9th, 2021) would be considered "cutting in line". If that is true, then you are correct in calling me out on this. Where might this policy be stated?

And btw, I just now looked at the NPS website. I had thought that I remembered reading that membership in NPS required that a significant portion of one's income come from photography. But the current wording is - "Members must be engaged in and derive income from the imaging business as professional photographers". (from item number 4 in https://www.nikonpro.com/TermsAndConditions.aspx). So, I was wrong about NPS membership. It is pretty loose, after all. Sorry about my accusation, and thanks for getting me to look more carefully at the current terms for membership in NPS. Seriously, thanks.

For me, it was just a warped sense of loyalty to Nikon (the underdog) at the time - now they're caught up.
I am really happy for the pros (who stayed with Nikon and didn't bail even though there was good reason to) getting their z9.
Nikon needs to hold pros in, and show the Associated Press and other agencies which switched to Sony, etc, that Nikon's back.
Amateurs shooting z9s won't get them noticed by big agencies, so they rightfully prioritized NPS orders.
I am sure they knew some amateurs would be annoyed and cancel, but they took a calculated risk.

Personally though, I had set a deadline in my mind, which was mid-Jan.
After that, if I didn't get the z9, I planned to switch to Sony, which has had world-class AF for years,
while still shooting minimal Nikon, to stay in touch with Nikon-land, and because I prefer Nikon for landscapes and portraits.

Why does that bother any of you NPS members

In fact, I'd started the process of NPS membership and got this email from them after a few days .. but dropped it.
Reason I dropped it is because I realized I was not doing the right thing - I do not derive much income from Photography.

I don't want to say the name of my dealer. Did you hear kwilliam8 put his order in a dealer for z9 on April last year? And he hasn't got one yet. How come happy NPS member should call us cheaters? We don't even have the priority.

I don’t care for your misery and can careless if anyone decides to put their name on a phantom preorder list of a product that doesn’t exist. As stated earlier, preorder of Z9 was not official until Nikon have announced it.
I already posted many times on how to obtain what you want faster on your next GAS. You can spend some time looking in that or waste all your time complaining. That is up to you.

It is a bit more strict:

Members must be engaged in and derive income from the imaging business as professional photographers or videographers, and own a majority interest in and/or be employed in a photography business or job (such as, for example, a staff photographer at a magazine). Applicants must provide Nikon with evidence of such professional status with their application for membership.

So, you need to show you own or work for a photography business. For example, if you have a side business where you shoot weddings on weekends, but have a full time job as an accountant, you would be eligible as long as Nikon considers your wedding business to be legitimate. I don’t know the criteria, but I imagine it is not one wedding a year. I was once told they look for somebody who is working in the photography business at least half time (20 hours per week). But that was third hand.

Your dealer’s name is a secret? OK, you are way less credible now. Sorry.

How does a dealer's name related to my post? Besides I don't want my dealer be called cheater.

All of this would check out then. I'm a staff photographer for a New York City collegiate system. I basically just uploaded two portraits of some students that I took for an ad campaign, a picture of Mayor Eric Adams at an event I had to cover and Congressman Thomas Suozzi and that seemed to be enough to get in...I could've easily provided more, but was too lazy to downscale some images of Governor Kathy Hochul that I have. I also freelance so included my website where they ask you to.

Congrats to all the NPS members getting 2nd round shipping notifications! This is great news for everybody. Considering the unprecedented times we are living in with pandemic-related issues worldwide, it is quite amazing that Nikon fulfilled their promise of beginning Z9 fulfillments before the end of 2021 and will soon have all NPS orders completed, a mere 3 weeks or so total time frame. And after mid-Jan we will see increasing quantities to whittle away at the long non-NPS preorder lists.

There are some non-NPS who also are starting to get shipping notifications from this 2nd allotment, just as Nikon did already deliver some open stock units in December from the first round. It only gets better from here on out folks. A flagship camera like this is well worth the wait for those who want one.

Actually, in earlier posts you kept saying you were concerned your dealer could cheat by giving away your place in line so…

Anyway…I’m done with this silliness. My Z9 is coming and I am happy. Good luck to you.
