My interest would be if the lens performed well with a x2 converter (in addition to the x1.4). I noticed that Marc’s image for 400mm f5.6 was really noisy due to higher ISO with the 5.6 aperture. Noise really impacts perceived sharpness, so I wonder if this combination really works better than what he reported(?).
F5.6 is f5.6, no way around it, the 100-400 GM is also f5.6 at 400mm. I think right now in Sony e mount, the only native lens that is brighter than that at 400mm is the 400mm f2.8 GM,which is a whole different animal.
I think a lot people are more interested in the 70-200 + 2X TC at 400mm, f5.6, vs the 100-400 GM at 400 mm, also f5.6. Most of the online reviews I have seen say the 100- 400 has a slight edge there in terms of sharpness and contrast, but pictures posted here by several 70-200 owners show the opposite. I will have my 70-200 next week so I can do my own comparison.

I would like to see more comparisons with the new 70-200 f2.8 II with the 1.4 TC . Being able to shoot at 280mm f4 hits a sweet spot missing in the Sony lineup for years now. I relied on both the Nikon and Canon 300mm F4 lenses for a long time, even though I had also access to the 2.8 versions for pro sports. Both of those lenses are fantastic yet the Canon didn't focus fast enough when converted to the Sony mount so I sold it.
With my Sony A7R4 and the combo above, I look forward to achieving a further reach to 420mm in APS-C mode. In any case, I won't be giving up the great Tamron 70-180 but finally having a lighter Sony 70-200 that can take a 1.4X is with little optical degradation is an option I've gotta have!

I hear you about f5.6. Thank heavens for DXO and Topaz denoise programs. It would be nice to see the lens tested at a lower ISO, however (tripod), to see what the lens, itself, is actually producing.
I acquired the Tamron 35-150mm (which I love), but am interested in the GM 70-200mm f2.8 II/ x2.0 if it allows me to replace my GM 100-400mm. This would give me a more sports oriented lens that can also accommodate some wildlife shooting (I use my 200-600 for more serious wildlife shooting).
I will look forward to the results of your comparisons.

Here are a few more outdoor 70-200 II photos taken with the 1.4TC at low ISO (100). Keep in mind, however, that it was a cold December day, so the shots were taken through a double pane glass window.

I tried one last week. Loved it, so mine shipped yesterday. It should arrive on Wednesday. I plan to realign my lens closet by selling a couple of lenses to make room for this in my lineup. It is that good...

Perhaps the lens will be have stronger supply than originally anticipated. My "friends" down at Texas Media Systems originally told me they didn't think they would get any for a long time based on an email they received from Sony. Low and behold I got an email yesterday saying if I wanted one, they would hold one for me. Their shipment came in with extras apparently and mine will now be here Thursday. They said their agreement with Sony prohibited release before 12/16. Give them a call and tell Leroy Tim sent ya.

Damnit the near end of the year gas is coming back and this new 70-200 gm ii with these great sample images is not helping I would use it for landscapes, events and portraits along with the sigma 85 1.4 dg dn and sony 135 gm. I will never get rid of those primes they are simply godly amazing but I rarely take them out for landscapes.

Too many images to post, I did a fairly comprehensive comparison (indoor) between the 70-200 and the 100-400 on my A1 on tripod. Here is my observation:
At 100mm (f4.5, f8), 200mm (f5.6, f8), the 70-200 is sharper pretty much cross the board
At 280mm (f5.6, f8), 400mm (f5.6, f8), the 100-400 is sharper than the 70-200 +TC
Bear in mind these were done at pixel peeping level, so the difference is hard to tell at normal viewing.
At the 100-400mm's MDF, the 100-400 is sharper than the 70-200 with the 2X TC.
The 70-200+2X TC is narrower than the 100-400 at 400mm in angle of view.
The images from the 70-200 seem a bit cooler in terms of white balance.
I will do a comparison outdoor when I get around to do it.
