Too many images to post, I did a fairly comprehensive comparison (indoor) between the 70-200 and the 100-400 on my A1 on tripod. Here is my observation:
At 100mm (f4.5, f8), 200mm (f5.6, f8), the 70-200 is sharper pretty much cross the board
At 280mm (f5.6, f8), 400mm (f5.6, f8), the 100-400 is sharper than the 70-200 +TC
Bear in mind these were done at pixel peeping level, so the difference is hard to tell at normal viewing.
At the 100-400mm's MDF, the 100-400 is sharper than the 70-200 with the 2X TC.
The 70-200+2X TC is narrower than the 100-400 at 400mm in angle of view.
The images from the 70-200 seem a bit cooler in terms of white balance.
I will do a comparison outdoor when I get around to do it....Show more →
Thanks for doing the comparison, Doug! It has always been my point that if one needs a 300/400mm focal length then you need to use a 300/400mm lens or a zoom lens that covers that focal length NATIVELY. You can get by using a TC, especially the 1.4X TC in a pinch but keeping either TC, especially the 2X TC to get the focal length what you need on a regular basis, regardless how good the 70-200mm lens is, you may be disappointed. With that said, if you stop down 2-stop or so, which we normally do in landscape/urbanscape photography, the difference will be less noticeable. I will be doing some cityscape with that lens, with and without the TC soon.
I sold my 100-400mm lens though since I will fall back on my 200-600mm lens.

Mine went from tomorrow to Friday, but UPS didn’t even pick up the lens until today so I wasn’t surprised to see the delay. Strange yours got pushed back so much though.

UuuGH! Should have known UPS would choke and change delivery date. Heck my poor driver has been driving a U haul box truck the last month. Was suppose to be here tomorrow and now they say Monday

I was ready to sell the 100-400 GM after I got the 70-200 GM II. I looked at the landscape pictures I took, a lot them were taken at longer than 200mm. I am now inclined to keep the 100-400 for landscape/cityscape compression, flowers/butterflies stuff, when hiking is easy and short. I don't want to take the bulky 200-600 for this type of shoots. The 70-200 will be for hiking, travel, and maybe portraits if I ever do that.

Did another comprehensive comparison (outdoor this time)) between the 70-200 and the 100-400 on my A1 on tripod. My observation in this test is the same as the indoor comparison I did yesterday:
At 100mm (f4.5, f8), 200mm (f5.6, f8), the 70-200 is sharper pretty much cross the board
At 280mm (f5.6, f8), 400mm (f5.6, f8), the 100-400 is sharper than the 70-200 +TC

I had a chance to actually shoot my new 70-200 f/2.8 GM II late this afternoon. The Mexican Brown Pelican colony down at La Jolla Cove near my home is well populated this year. Most of the birds are starting to reach peak breeding color right now so I decided to test it on them.
The lens is bright, sharp, very fast to focus and tracks very well. Nice and light, so easy to hand hold. This lens looks to become one of these keep forever classics.

I have owned 4 different lenses in this category. A Nikon 700-200 2.8 F mount, a Tamron 70-200 2.8 F mount, The Tamron 70-180mm E-Mount, and now this new Sony 70-200mm 2.8 GM.
This new Sony version is by far the best overall I have ever shot. Super fast focus, sharp, full featured, and light. I also love the aperture ring that matches my other GM lenses.

I was using it yesterday late afternoon. Nothing to post yet but excellent performance. Slight flare shooting directly into the setting sun but very little. Great contrast, color and sharpness like a good prime. And the weight, damn, every time I hold it, I can't believe it is so light.

The more I read, the more I feel like if the 70-200 is a workhorse lens for you, it's a "buy once, cry once" situation, knowing you're set for a long, long time.

Does anyone know if the 200-600 or previous gen 70-200gm foot fits?
My 100-400 GM's Kirk foot fits the new 70-200, it fits the old 70-200 too according to Kirk, so by extension, the foot that fits the old 70-200 should fit the new 70-200 as well. The 200-600 uses a different foot.

So far, nothing but praise for this lens.
How does the physical size compare to the Tamron 70-180? Very tempted by this lens but love the size:quality of the Tamron

Judging by the more extended focal length range, the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 is physically slightly larger and heavier. I do not have nor have I handled the Tamron zoom lens but I understood that the length of the lens extends as you zoom while the new Sony lens has an internal zooming mechanism. And as such the length remains the same regardless at the FL setting.
Edited/corrected from an internal "focusing" to "zooming" mechanism.

Thanks. This was actually more of a 'do I have space in my bag' question. I just reconfigured my Shimoda and, lo and behold, I do...
