I thought the bokeh was a weak point of this lens. The pictures posted in this thread says otherwise. I've seen some nice creamy backgrounds.
Compared to bokeh generated by fast prime lenses under similar shooting circumstance,, such as GM 85mm, GM 135mm and Sigma 105mm f/1.4 the bokeh generated is not as smooth but still really good for an f/2.8 zoom lens. I didn’t do any direct comparison however and I “judged” only based on my experience using those fast prime lenses,

I would appreciate feedback on high ISO performance of this lens.
I am shooting indoor sports with 135GM and could consider switching over to this 70-200GM II for flexibility.

From all the images posted so far I think the Bokeh actually looks real good. I'm a prime guy but can't wait to get this lens myself. It's going to be a long 9 days or so

The shown images look great for a 200mm FL and 2x TC. However I presently am using a FE 70-300 G and am yearning for more FL than 400mm. The 200-600 scares me due to its size so a good, well centered 100-400 with 1.4 TC is on my shopping list, just in case someone wants to replace his/her 100-400 with a 70-200/2.8 II

Looks like a great lens and it works excellently with the 1.4TC. Hopefully there's not a lot of sample variation. I'm looking forward to receiving mine soon.

To some extent, it is covered by Marc's review posted above. I didn't do any comparison since that's the only lens I currently have but the operation, or usage experience of that lens is nothing short but outstanding. Yes, not only the AF is extremely accurate and fast, I didn't seei any mis-focus images, not a single one as matter of fact out of several hundred images taken recently with my A1, but that lens is such a pleasure to use, in addition to being optically superb.

I'm pretty sure there was some other video too, somewhere in the Tamron thread .
My short takeaway on it is that GMII is definitely sharper and has better (more accurate & faster) AF, while the Tamron has a bit lower contrast which translates into smoother oof rendering.

If all other things were equal, the 35-70mm range of the Tamron seems much nicer to have in most situations than the 150-200mm range of the new GM II. I have the Tamron 35-150mm and I *love* it's range/sharpness/contrast. We took family portraits with it last weekend that just turned out wonderful *chefs kiss*.
That said, we haven't really seen the 70-200 GM II yet, but all the reviews point to it having a slight edge in IQ to even the Tamron, which is already a pretty high bar. If the IQ with the 2x TC rivals the IQ of the 100-400mm GM, it becomes a really compelling option on multiple fronts.

District Camera just confirmed that I will have the lens in my hand on the 16th. They have a few more that have not been spoken for yet. Not affiliated with them in any shape or form. I bought my first A1 and the 600 GM from them, good honest local folks. Not sure what subjects I will first shoot with this lens, maybe just my dog.

The review had this to say in regards to the Tamron:
"The Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD (1800 euros) is in another category as trying to replace both a 24-70 and a 70-200. It is an excellent lens and unique it the focal length + aperture proposed. Its downside are the weight, front heavy design and quality of bokeh balls at the borders."
Having read the review he favors the Sony but Tamron is an excellent lens for it's what it's designed for and great value. I don't think it's a replacement for the 70-200 however. Just like the Sony can't replace the 24-70 range that the Tamron mostly fills.

I come to the decision about the two lenses for possibly "dumb" reasons. I already own primes and zooms that pretty much cover all focal lengths except very long (> 400). I was interested in a "fast" zoom for shooting events so I wouldn't be changing lenses frequently. Either of the two seemed like possible solutions....that's why I was curious about a comparison. I actually shot a Christmas parade recently with my 70-300 G and while I would have enjoyed narrower DOF, the image quality from that lens (on an A7RIVA) was really not too bad. The biggest failure of the series was my rookie/poor composition skills.

My interest would be if the lens performed well with a x2 converter (in addition to the x1.4). I noticed that Marc’s image for 400mm f5.6 was really noisy due to higher ISO with the 5.6 aperture. Noise really impacts perceived sharpness, so I wonder if this combination really works better than what he reported(?).
