Siiiigggghhh!!!
I have finished at last an in-depth and exhaustive test comparing my new Sony GM 70-200 /2.8 MK2 to my "old" Sony GM 70-200 /2.8 MK1 on two Sony A7R2s.The conclusions are as follows:
The MK2 is clearly sharper and more contrasty throughout the entire range of focal lengths and apertures compared to the MK1.Not only the center and edges, but especially the image corners. 200mm fl is the best example.
The MK2 has a significantly faster and more accurate autofocus, particulary in worse lighting.
MK2 has even less visible spherical and chromatic aberrations plus a little warmer colour rendition.
OSS effectiveness is about the same.
And this miraculously low weight.Just a little over 1kg.What a relief!
In short: It is worth replacing the old with a new one, because it has a clearly better overall image quality, autofocus and is much lighter.
BTW: The Mk1 is still a very good lens and the quality of photos taken with it is more than satisfactory

Plus, you can modify the lighting conditions and shoot more comfortably rather than having to brave the challenging weather conditions, like at Conowingo .

Good photos of her, Joshua .. 🙃
The flying part is easy but I am not sure about the holding fish part though . Thank you very much, Anil!

I sold my original 70-200mm GM lens quite a while ago. I was happy with its performance but for whatever reasons, I prefer using prime lenses more for portraits back then. But the new lens may change my position and again, time will tell as I haven’t had the chance to use it more extensively. Thank you for your insight, Peire and I agree with your points although I didn’t do any direct comparison.

My "old" Mk1 has only 11 months. And I have all GM primes and zooms save 16-35/2.8 and 100/2.8 stf.Yet excellent 70-200/2.8 will serve me as high quality equivalent of still non existing 200/2.8 GM prime, not too much weighty by the way.

Actually I'm looking at the 70-200GM as a bargain. Assuming your someone (like me) that want that reach out to 400. The 100-400GM is fantastic (was my favorite for a while) but can't be a substitute for a faster 70-200 when needed. Where as the new 70-200GM with a converter can duplicate what the 100-400GM did. The 100-400GM is 2500. So for that additional 800 dollars (70-200ii + 2x) your getting the best 70-200 2.8 lens on the market and a comparable 100-400GM lens all in one. Which allows you to carry just one lens instead of 2. Oh, and you save a little weight as well since the 70-200 + 2x is still lighter than the 100-400GM. Pretty sweet deal in my opinion...Show more →
I've been wondering about how good the TC's would be with this lens. (I just got mine.) Wow!
How I got here:
Tried to use the 100-400 with TC for wildlife. Wasn't happy with the results. Decided to buy the 200-600. Love it! So I sold the 100-400 but have had second thoughts about that for using the 100 - 400 for other types of shooting. Then the 70-200 GMII was introduced. Never had the GMI, started pondering "best of both worlds" per your comments above. Proof in the pudding would be how it works with the TCs. Then I see these results. (I sold the TC also, doh!) These results are close enough for me!
And it also solves an irritating thing on the 100-400 - the external zooming really messes with the stability when hand holding or on a gimbal mount.

Is the close focusing good enough to replace Sony 90 G macro? I typical use the 90 for food photography. I’m a hobbyist and like when one lens has multiple uses.

I don't think the 70-200 II zoom lens, as good as it is, can totally take the place of a dedicated macro. As a hobbyist, I still like to have a macro lens with that razor sharp capability at very close distance.

No, it will not substitute a full fledge macro lens but if you do macro only occasionally, you can get away by using an extension tube or a combo of extension tubes with the lens to get it to focus closer than the original minimum focusing distance. BTW, an extension tubes will work with any lenses in your lineup but beware of some losses of IQ of wide angle lenses if you do extreme closeups.

With the 2-diopter Canon doublet close-up lens on the GMII you can do slightly better than 0.5X, and zoomed wide with the focus set at infinity the field of view is ~25cm horizontally, IIRC. Not, of course, a full substitute for a dedicated macro lens but not too shabby.

I should have mine in about 10 days. Sold the Batis 135 already in anticipation of getting this lens. With the TC on the 70-200, the 100-400 GM will get very little use. For anything longer than 400mm I have other lenses. I also have a Sigma 85 f1.4, bought it after reading the positive reviews. I used it to take a dozen pictures of my dog only, not really doing any portraits. May sell the Sigma too. So by replacing 3 lenses with the 70-200, I actually "make" some money. I already have the 1.4X and the 2 X TC.
