Actually I'm looking at the 70-200GM as a bargain. Assuming your someone (like me) that want that reach out to 400. The 100-400GM is fantastic (was my favorite for a while) but can't be a substitute for a faster 70-200 when needed. Where as the new 70-200GM with a converter can duplicate what the 100-400GM did. The 100-400GM is 2500. So for that additional 800 dollars (70-200ii + 2x) your getting the best 70-200 2.8 lens on the market and a comparable 100-400GM lens all in one. Which allows you to carry just one lens instead of 2. Oh, and you save a little weight as well since the 70-200 + 2x is still lighter than the 100-400GM. Pretty sweet deal in my opinion

I've been wondering about how good the TC's would be with this lens. (I just got mine.) Wow!

How I got here:

Tried to use the 100-400 with TC for wildlife. Wasn't happy with the results. Decided to buy the 200-600. Love it! So I sold the 100-400 but have had second thoughts about that for using the 100 - 400 for other types of shooting. Then the 70-200 GMII was introduced. Never had the GMI, started pondering "best of both worlds" per your comments above. Proof in the pudding would be how it works with the TCs. Then I see these results. (I sold the TC also, doh!) These results are close enough for me!

And it also solves an irritating thing on the 100-400 - the external zooming really messes with the stability when hand holding or on a gimbal mount.

Gerald Undone talks about it in his review. With 2x Converter it is soft compared to 100-400. No free lunches in life.
