Yes, the new 70-200mm GM II is impressive, even used with a TC. But keep in mind that it cannot get you beyond 400mm that the 100-400mm GM plus any of the TCs can deliver. Well, you have the TC already that you use with that new lens. Of course, it works out just fine if you have a longer lens than 400mm, like the 200-600mm lens.
Excellent point. In fact, my eye may be off, but in the side-by-side comparisons, I gravitate to the 100-400 as being sharper. Nevertheless, they (70-200 w/2.0x vs 100-400) are close, and I always thought my purchase of the 2.0 TC was a waste. Now, I'm happy that the 2.0 TC does work relatively well with something (i.e. the 70-200 GM II). Bravo, Sony! Yet, as indicated, the 100-400 gets more reach with either TC, although perhaps with some degradation when using the 2.0 TC.

To my eye, it seems to vary with each comparison, but they're definitely close. It would be helpful to know where the focus is in each picture.

My 70-200 GM II is stuck in FedEx hell in Memphis, TN. It was originally scheduled for delivery on the 29th. Now it says “on time” on the tracker even tho it is Pending and hasn’t been updated in 6 days since reaching Memphis. I asked B&H to look in to it. Hopefully it will arrive… some time.

I have no idea what happened to FedEx, but something is seriously wrong with their operation lately.
They just lost my order from Home Depot. It was supposed to be delivered last week. But never came. Tracking said delayed and delivery date pending. I finally called today and they said they can’t find it. Told me to call Home Depot and get a refund.
I also ordered a 70-200GM II. Luckily, that one came yesterday. But I had actually requested the lens be diverted to a FedEx location. Because I wasn’t sure I would be home to sign for the item. But it came to my house anyway. They didn’t even ring the doorbell or ask for a signature. They just left it on the porch. Luckily I was home.
I know it’s a busy time of the year, but I have a few friends that rely on FedEx for their businesses. Even they said they have noticed the unreliability of FedEx lately. I hope they get things figured out.
And I hope you get your lens soon. I haven’t had a chance to use mine much yet. But from the few test photos I’ve taken around the house, this lens is a beast.

Just as a matter of curiosity, some of us have received the GM II from B&H, but their website as of a few minutes ago still says shipping will begin on Dec 16. Duh.
I thought my copy was a little disappointing in the corners (symmetrically) until I compared it to the 100-400mm GM at 200mm on the same target. I think I was disappointed because of recent testing of the 35mm and 50mm Apo Lanthars.

Here are some additional comparison pix between the 70-200GM2 w/2XTC and the 100-400GM. Pix were taken with the same settings, both lenses wide open (I would not normally use this setting for the landscape), imported into LR with no adjustments whatsoever, and these are raw unprocessed just as the A1 sensor provided. Focus point on both comparison images is the large rock dead center in the photograph. I'll let the viewer make their own judgement on the results

If you have to look that hard to see a difference then in real world use there really isn't one. Which is great. Was not expecting that. I loved my 100-400gm but the added versatility of having 70-200 at 2.8 in basically the same lens is awesome. Still waiting for mine Hopefully my copy + 2x performs similarly.

Thank you for the comparison shots. I'm seeing the 100-400 GM as slightly sharper, but it may be due to the darker contrast. Both lenses are so close, though.

I agree the 100-400 looks slightly sharper...but I'm guessing for many that difference will be deemed negligible.
Then again those TC's aren't free, and if you're only buying them to use on what's already a $2,800 lens, then I guess you need to make good and sure the combo best fits your needs.

The AF with the 2X seemed fine to me once I switched on the limiter. The A1 locked on to the eye in similar fashion to the 200-600. Second shot is a heavy crop.

Actually I'm looking at the 70-200GM as a bargain. Assuming your someone (like me) that want that reach out to 400. The 100-400GM is fantastic (was my favorite for a while) but can't be a substitute for a faster 70-200 when needed. Where as the new 70-200GM with a converter can duplicate what the 100-400GM did. The 100-400GM is 2500. So for that additional 800 dollars (70-200ii + 2x) your getting the best 70-200 2.8 lens on the market and a comparable 100-400GM lens all in one. Which allows you to carry just one lens instead of 2. Oh, and you save a little weight as well since the 70-200 + 2x is still lighter than the 100-400GM. Pretty sweet deal in my opinion

That's true- I'm considering it myself. For me though I'd also want the 1.4 TC for f/4 out to 280mm. My current zoom combo is the Tamron 70-180 (which I bought after selling a 70-200 2.8 GM v1) and a Tamron 70-300. I want more reach and having a single lens that could act as 3, even though it'd be a cost hit for my scenario, is tempting.

Sadly I don’t think I’m getting my lens. Following reaching out to B&H to have them open an investigation, B&H created a new order for me and it’s listed as backordered. No update from FedEx.
I still haven’t gotten a reply from them about what the situation is tho. Just notifications that a new order was created.

Damn. That sucks.
Been hearing about a lot of FedEx thefts in the news. A cargo train in Los Angeles was hit and hundred of packages were stolen. Then that weird situation in Alabama where a driver dumped hundreds of packages in the woods.
Who knows what happened to your lens. It wouldn’t be a big deal if B&H could just send you out a new one. Hopefully they’ll get some more stock in soon.
Have you spoken to B&H about giving you priority on the replacement order? If you haven’t, I would definitely ask for first dibs on the next allotment since this whole situation was no fault of your own. If FedEx didn’t screw up, you would already have your lens by now.
Hopefully, they can work with you to get the lens as soon as possible. Maybe try contacting Henry from B&H. He’s often on this forum. Maybe he can do something for you.

FedEx seems to be having some kind of backlog in Memphis. I’ve been following the some other forums while waiting for my new MacBook Pro delivery and universally, MBPs that are being delivered by FedEx have been stuck at that location for many many days before moving along to the next location for delivery. But the good news is that they seem to finally move after some time and end up delivered. Luckily, mine was shipped through UPS…
Looks like only (some) B&H preorders were lucky enough to get shipped. Doesn’t sound like any of the other vendors (like mine) shipped any of their lenses early. Jealous of everyone who got theirs early but please keep posting pics. Living vicariously through you all!

I am not much of lens tester and I didn’t bother testing the lens. I used it as it was designed the day before yesterday, namely for taking real-life images. The corners are not sharp? Oh, well .

Joshua, that model will look good no matter what lens is used.
