Focus feels faster with the 100-400 but only marginally and that's just seat of the pants feel. I didn't notice any difference on the 70-200GM2 with and without the 2X TC attached regarding focus speed. It's fast either way.
Can you post more comparisons? I find this very intriguing...you're starting to make a good case to get this lens with a 2x TC to replace the 100-400. After I got my Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 last week, I was considering cancelling my preorder for this lens (and holding onto my 100-400), but your posts have me reconsidering that choice.

Took a quick stroll around the subdivision pond this morning with the new 70-200 II and the 2x teleconverter. I must say I was impressed with the overall results. Some sample photos follow taken from between 20 and 70 yards wide open (f/5.6 with the 2x teleconverter) at 200mm (400mm with the converter) and some additional cropping in post.

Seems crazy to think this 70-200/2.8 with a 2x converter would potentially replace my Tamron 70-180 which I love and the Sony 100-400 lens. Sits in between them for weight. Bigger/longer than the awesome Tamron.
With a 1.4x wonder if it would serve well for night sports or if that one stop of light loss would be too much…

quick test this morning. I can't see any real IQ difference. The handling though: the 70-200 + 2X is less front heavy and substantially lighter. I'll see how the AF works with the combo later today.

To me, this looks like the 70-200 with 2x is definitely sharper than the 100-400. I'm amazed by that, and really thinking about changing out my 100-400. I don't currently have a fast 70-200 so the whole package is pretty appealing. Hmm.

I have a question about magnification ratio for the 70-200 with 2x teleconverter. How does it compare with the 100-400? One of the use cases for me for the 100-400 is close focus where it focuses to 1:4. Thanks for any input on this.

Those are some amazing results! If the 70-200GMII didn't run at €2999 here I'd even consider swapping one out for the other, but alas

The Maximum magnification ratio for the 70-200 GM II is .3 and I believe a lens will have its reproduction ratio increased by the same multiplication factor of the teleconverter lens, so it will go from 0.3x to 0.6x with the 2.0x teleconverter.
The Max. magnification factor for the 100-400 GM is .35x, so it goes from .35x to .7x with the 2.0x TC. Fairly similar to the 70-200GM II.
Minimum focus distance is 1.32 feet to 2.69 feet with the 70-200 GM II whereas minimum focus distance with the 100-400 GM is 3.22 feet.

Thanks for your great clarification! I should have added 10" to the rough measurement I posted above to get back to the sensor plane.

I saw you put the 100-400 up for sale already. I may do the same when I get my 70-200. I am surprised your 70-200+2x TC vs 100-400 comparison shows the 70-200 is even a bit sharper with the 2x TC than the 100-400 GM at 400mm. I saw several YT reviews that show the opposite, although only slightly. Maybe copy variation played a role in the different results of the comparisons.

Yep it just sold. I have owned 2 of the 100-400 GMs and this is a good copy, the 70-200 & 2X is just that good. I've got the 200-600 if I need more than 400mm anyway.

Yes, the new 70-200mm GM II is impressive, even used with a TC. But keep in mind that it cannot get you beyond 400mm that the 100-400mm GM plus any of the TCs can deliver. Well, you have the TC already that you use with that new lens. Of course, it works out just fine if you have a longer lens than 400mm, like the 200-600mm lens.
